Megamind VS Gru ( Megamind VS Despicable Me )
“ There’s a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line. “
— Oscar Levant
Megamind, Metro City's greatest villain turned revolutionary hero and defender.
Gru, former heartless villain who stole the moon, reformed into a loving father.
Do you think even the worst person can change? That everybody can be a good person, if they just try? The prospect of villainy is a tempting one, with the freedom to do whatever the heart desires without the constraints of morals or ethics. Yet even with all the power and all the money in the world, you can't buy happiness and you can't buy love. It is the people around you who make you happy, make you better, and make you want to be better.
Two legendary villains who transitioned from world-ending terrors to renowned heroes all due to certain people who creep their way into their evil little hearts. However, who would come up on top in a battle? The Supervillain who stole the moon? Or the Supervillian who had defeated Metroman? Let's find out!
This is the blog I let my friends vote on last year. For those reading, behold a year's worth of research and work! I hope you all enjoy it. ^-^
Fanart:
Megamind:
"Oh, you're a villain, alright!
Just not a super one!"
Fate has its favourites. A black hole was consuming two planets. As the last son of his dying world, Megamind was sent to Earth destined to…something? He didn't quite catch the last part. At the same time, another baby was sent off from his planet. A new world with infinite possibilities. Was he destined for good or evil? Be a hero? Or a villain?
Fate made the choice for him. The other baby landed in the warm loving embrace of a rich family. Megamind meanwhile landed in a prison. The other boy grew up to be Metroman, praised for his power and abilities. On the other hand, Megamind was ostracized. He was discriminated against and humiliated for his efforts to contribute. Others painted him as a villain and Metroman as a hero. Eventually, Megamind decided that if it was the role he was given, the role he then shall play.
The citizens of Metro City would forever tremble under the supervillain MEGAMIND: Incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all evil.
A several year long rivalry began between Megamind and Metroman. An intricate dance between light and dark, a duel between good and evil, and good always persevered…until Metroman died. On the faithful day, Megamind successfully struck Metroman with his Death Ray, killing him, eviscerating his body. With Metroman dead, Megamind had finally won!
With no one left to oppose him, Megamind ruled over the streets of Metro City. He could do whatever he desired: steal, vandalise, and destroy. He was free to be a villain, and no one could challenge him!…No one to challenge him? He had achieved his life’s mission, beating Metroman and conquering the city, yet he couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy as he longed for a worthy opponent. With a hero to oppose him, what is there to fight for?
Disguised as a librarian Bernard, he accidentally confides in Roxanne Ritchi, a news reporter and the supposed love interest of Metroman. It was then when Roxanne sparked a revelation. If it's a hero that he longs for, why not make a new one? He would find a pure hearted human and empower them with the powers of a god! Except he accidentally empowers a cameraman Hal Stewart with the abilities of Metroman. Disillusioned by dreams of a hero and as a victim of the sunk cost fallacy, Megamind doubled down and slowly began training up Hal, hoping to re-enact the glory days.
In the meantime, he began slowly forming a relationship with Roxanne. It began slowly, using the Bernard disguise to finagle himself out of an awkward social situation. Over time, he slowly started hanging out with Roxanne. Eventually, they fell in love and scheduled a date. The whole villainy act didn't seem so appealing anymore.
However, one of his many lies would inevitably fall through —and when it did, it did spectacularly. Broken up and dumped in the pouring rain, Megamind refocused his efforts to preparing the Hero-Villain act. But to the surprise of even Megamind, his new hero Tighten wasn't quite the hero he envisioned. He was selfish, greedy, and arrogant, and he took what he wanted. Tighten became a threat even greater than Megamind, and he needed to be stopped. The unlikely duo of Megamind and Roxanne went searching in Metroman's home in search of a possible solution, only to find Metro Man, who was very much alive.
Metroman had gotten sick of society's expectations of him: to be strong, be heroic and be charming. Reaching an epiphany, Metroman faked his death and pursued a career in music, becoming Music Man. Instead of actually helping, he offered a piece of advice to Megamind. There was something greater calling for him, he just needed to find it.
With new inspiration from his once adversary, Megamind had his stand against Tighten. With assistance from Minion and newfound determination he got from Roxanne, Megamind eventually defeated Tighten using a combination of his smarts and wits. For the first time in his life, Megamind truly won his first battle. Just as Metroman did, Megamind forged his own path and decided to be a hero.
Megamind! No longer a master of evil, now the defender of Metro City. He had finally found his call, finally found his purpose, finally found something to win for; love.
Gru:
“There are a lot of other villains in the world,
but I'm going to be a supervillain!”
Since young, Gru had always yearned to be a super villain. From the age of three, Gru vowed his life to becoming the world’s greatest supervillain. However, even as an adult, his criminal record was not even recognised, let alone worthy enough to be awarded the title. Desiring to cement his legacy as one of the world’s great, his next heist would be greater than any ever done before.
He would steal…pause…THE MOON!
Using an experimental Shrink Ray, Gru would shrink the Moon and steal it for himself. Unfortunately, he had a competitor: A young upstart villain with both direction and magnitude, the Vector. Hence, a race began to steal the Shrink Ray from the Vector and get to the moon first. Gru needed a disguise to go undercover, so naturally…Gru adopted three girls: Mgo, Edith, and Agnes. Gru spent time with the girls, giving them toys and reading them bedtime stories. Eventually, Gru’s plan was successful. However, the time he spent with the girls had warmed his cold heart. Perhaps…there was more to life than villainy?
When the Vector kidnapped the girls, Gru was forced to engage in a face off against him in a battle to get them back. Previously, Vector’s defenses were impenetrable to Gru, but something had changed. Nothing could stand between Gru and his children. Gru eventually rescued his kids, and sent the Moon into space —with the Vector on it.
Through this exploit, Gru would earn the recognition of the Anti-Villain League. He would go on to battle against many other villains, such as El Macho, Balthazar Brat, and Maxime Le Mal. He would also reunite with his long lost brother and find true love in a wife. He found a new way of life, all thanks to three little girls who gave him a heart.

Abilities & Gear:
Megamind:
Gear:
De–Gun:
The De-gun is Megamind's most used weapon, and is his go-to weapon for quickly finishing a battle thanks to its lightweight and quick draw speed. The De-gun has a multitude of different settings, each of which fulfilling multiple purposes. While we haven't seen the full range of abilities the De-gun offers, we have seen quite a lot of them.
Dehydrate: Transforms anything Megamind shoots into a small blue cube. This setting is indiscriminate, affecting both objects and living things regardless of size. The effects reverse when a cube touches a body of water.
Delete/ “De”–sintegrate/ Destroy: These settings are functionally nearly identical, shooting energy blasts that can blow through doors, brick walls, trees, and cars.
De-gravity controls gravity, allowing him to levitate targets.
Decrease?: Does not have an official name, but can shrink objects and people.
De-celerate: Slows down an opponent, making them think slower and fall slower.
De-mobilize: Incapacitates targets in a green force field.
De-epfreeze: Shoots ice and can trap people in ice cubes.
De-balance: Spins the target making them dizzy.
De-bilitate: Makes opponents weaker to the point of fainting.
There are also settings that have been shown on the gun, yet have never been used:
Decompress
Demoralize
Decoupage
Debilitate
Deregulate
Delock
While the De-gun already has a quick fire rate, Megamind can increase its speed using the Rapid Fire setting, although he struggles to control its trajectory.
It's not a surprise Megamind uses the De-gun so often. It is a shockingly versatile tool with many means of durability negation. In fact, it makes you wonder why he doesn't use it more often.
Freeze Ray:
The Freeze Ray shoots cold blasts to form solid ice constructs. The blasts have a wide area of effect and are strong enough to hold up the weight of a train.
Sticky Gun:
The Sticky Gun fires out sticky balls that stick the opponent in place with a sticky substance. Sticky. The design is inspired from fly traps, and it is effective enough to incapacitate Minion.
Portal Bazooka:
Yeah the name isn't too creative. It is a Bazooka that fires a portal. As something enters the portal, it closes and traps them. Firing a second shot reopens the portal to let them out.
Defuser Gun
Following the defeat of Metro Man, Megamind yearned for a worthy rival to test his mind. Using a sample of DNA, he is able to infuse anybody with a fraction of Metro Man's powers. He mistakenly infused Hal Stewart with Metroman's powers, and sunk cost fallacy himself into becoming Titan the hero. He later took back Metroman's powers from Tighten the villain. His defuser gun should still be with him for him to use, that's only if he remembers where he placed it.
Knockout gas:
The name is self-explanatory. A spray that releases gas that knocks you out. Minion uses this to knock out Roxanne, and later attempts to use this on Hal. Unfortunately, the knockout gas had run out, leading Minion to use the alternative…
Forget-me Stick:
It's a bat that Minion used to knock out Hal but hitting him really hard, which caused him to forget that Megamind and Minion were there. It's a crude method but I mean…it worked?
Disguise Watch:
Moving away from the combat weapons, the disguise watch allows the user to mimic the exact appearance of another person, as well as their voice. Megamind has used it to copy the appearance of the Warden, Bernard, and even Metroman —although it doesn't copy Metroman's abilities.
Shrink Bombs:
These bombs can shrink humans to a size only a few inches tall. The effects seem to be instantaneous, although it is unknown if it is reversible. Megamind can reverse the effects, but he does it off screen.
Particle Collider:
A particle accelerator is a machine that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to very high speeds and energies to contain them in well-defined beams. Megamind has one of these which can supposedly atomise anything.
Time Destabilizer:
Megamind has devices that can manipulate time. It's crazy to think that Megamind had these, yet still could never defeat Metroman. This Time Destabilizer can send things far into the future or even the past.
Stone of Transference:
A relic from Metroman's homeplanet, allowing super powered individuals such as Megamind and Metroman to switch abilities; Metroman becomes smarter whilst Megamind becomes stronger. When Megamind temporarily achieved Metroman's powers, he could fly, use X-ray and Laser Vision, and could lift fire trucks. However, Megamind loses his gift of intelligence when doing this, making him increasingly more stupid the longer the effects last.
Nuclear Bombs:
Back to the weapons, we have a nuke. He apparently has those. I don't know where he stores it or why he brings it up casually but he still has them.
Death ray:
This is Megamind's most powerful weapon: The Death Ray. It charges up solar energy time, and fires the full concentrated might of the sun through one blast all the way from orbit. It has a relatively low area of effect, although everything in its area gets utterly eviscerated. However, it needs time for (in Minion’s words) the sun to “warm up”. This likely refers to the Death Ray needing time to accumulate energy from the sun, hence resulting in a decently long charge time of a few minutes.
Invisible Car:
Now onto Vehicles, Megamind’s go-to vehicle is the Invisible car. It has come in handy on numerous occasions, including helping Minion kidnap Roxanne and allowing Megamind to escape and defeat Tighten. However, due to its invisibility, Megamind often forgets where he leaves the vehicle.
Hoverbike:
Minion (disguised as Megamind) uses this hoverbike to save Roxanne from Tighten. The Vehicle works best in the air, however it can also be used on the ground.
Scooter:
Scooter.
Balloon Ball
Now onto Megamind's suits, Megamind can form a protective ball made from balloons with the tap of his belt. Its primary function is to help Megamind survive falls from great heights.
Magnetic Helmet:
Not much is known about this helmet other than it makes Megamind look more insane than he already is. Presumably it grants Megamind ferrokinesis, also known as control over Metal.
Force Field Helmet:
A helmet that forms a protective layer of electricity, allowing him to redirect any projectiles that might hit him. He uses its defensive electric shield in combination with its repulsion properties to save himself during dodgeball.
Battle Suit:
Megamind creates a battle suit to use in his first battle against Tighten. Its movements follow Megamind's own movements, allowing for quick hand-to-hand combat. It is strong and fast enough to keep up with Tighten with relative ease.
Power Gloves:
These gloves amplify Megamind's strengths to new levels which he uses underneath his Metroman disguise. In theory, these gloves upgrade his strength to another tier. That may be true, however they have a limit as shown above.
Blower Glove & Tesla Glove:
These gloves are from his video game and are self-explanatory. The Blower Gloves form huge blasts of win to keep opponents away. The Tesla Gloves shocks opponents upon close contact.
Jetpack & Hover Boots:
The Jetpack and Hover Boots enable Megamind to have aerial movement. It makes Megamind more mobile and a difficult target to hit, even for Tighten. He uses these in combination with the Disguise Watch and Power Gloves to complete his Metroman cosplay.
Metro Man Suit:
Forget what I said, this is the Metroman cosplay. It is designed to mimic Metroman’s powers, including super strength gauntlets, jets in his boots, dual purpose lasers and X-Ray vision visor. He never quite uses this suit again, as being exactly like Metroman was never meant for him.
Abilities:
Megamind does not have a lot of abilities outside of his big head. From his video game, je does have the ability to double jump. How does he do this and why does he have this? I haven't a clue.
Armies:
Ol’ Chum, or “Minion” as he used to go by, is Megamind's sidekick and right-hand man. Sent in the same pod together from a dying world, Megamind and Chum have been best friends since childhood. Although Megamind is occasionally ungrateful for Chum's aid, he usually comes around.
Ol’ Chum, despite his childish facade, is intelligent and capable. His engineering genius nearly matches that of Megamind, and he has been instrumental in ensuring Megamind’s plans run smoothly. He even disguised himself as Megamind in order to sell Metroman's return.
The presentation line is actually delivered by him.
Chum wears an external suit that allows him to move about whilst staying hydrated. The suit is more powerful than Megamind's own strength, however it does have the weakness of being a glorified fish tank —should the glass break, Chum will be incapacitated.
Brainbots
These drones make up the large majority of Megamind's army, serving as practical workhorses, as well as robotic pets. They can fly, pick up objects, former holograms, gather storms, among many other functions. They act upon Megamind's and Chum’s words.
They are physically weaker than Megamind, as they get destroyed by a single stick of dynamite and exploded by Tighten. They are however powerful, as they are equipped with lasers. Similar lasers from security have entirely destroyed Chum's body.
The Brain Bots are equipped with a Porta-Prison, which is a laser cage designed to hold supervillains. It was once defective, but after an upgrade from Chum, they are entirely functional.
I cannot find an exact number for the number of Brainbots Megamind has, the number is likely between 10,000 and 100,000. The most I was able to find was this.
The MEGA-MEGAmind
A huge robot designed to target Metroman. This robot is likely Megamind's second strongest creation behind the Death Ray, and is equipped with rocket hands and a car launching arm cannon on top of its ridiculous strength. However, it is designed only to attack Metroman, making it functionally useless against most other foes.
Spider Bot
A robot with a design similar to that of a spider. That's about all there is to say about this one.
Gru:
Gear:
Freeze Ray:
Gru's signature weapon works by encasing victims in a layer of ice, preventing them from moving. It's one of Gru's favourites for its quick draw and power, making it efficient and effective. However, it can be broken out of with enough strength, as shown with Purple El Macho.
Heat Ray:
On the opposite side of the Freeze Ray, we have the Heat Ray. Instead of forming ice constructs, the Heat Ray solves problems by blasting a massive blast to annihilate problems. Gru first uses this to incinerate a rigged carnival game to win his youngest daughter a unicorn plushie.
Air Gun:
The Air Gun shoots air as a projectile to blow away any opposition. It can also be used to give Gru an extra boost midair, akin to a double jump. Not one of the most glamorous weapons, but certainly useful for the mobility it offers.
Laser Gun:
A gun that shoots a laser. Nothing too remarkable but it has proven to be handy before. Less is more I suppose.
Cheese Ray:
A gun that shoots cheese. It is in the name. I'm running out of things to say here. Created from young Gru, he can blast people with glorified controlled expired milk. Honestly, I don't mind it.
Fart gun:
Behold, our first fart joke. It was bound to happen. This gun ejects out a pungent gas that knocks out people who inhale it. It was able to knock out Purple El Macho, so it certainly is strong.
Jelly Guns:
These guns shoot out Jelly. Neat. They aren't designed to do damage, rather the Jelly they shoot transforms the dangerous Purple Minions back into regular Minions.
Sticky Fingers:
Into their more irregular gear, young Gru primarily uses the Sticky Fingers. It projects out a hand construct made of goo that is controlled by the other hand. It is practical for its extended reach.
Zodiac Stone:
The Zodiac Stone can transform anybody into one of the twelve animals from the Lunar New Year Calendar, ranging from Dragons and Tigers to Monkeys and Chicken. Gru used the stone to transform the Vicious 6 into mice. However, it only works on Chinese New Year, meaning it is functionally useful like 0.27% of the time.
Lipstick Taser:
Given to him by his wife Lucy, the Lipstick Taser gives an electric shock to its opponent. It is a great stealth weapon and a powerful one too. In a single zap, it was able to incapacitate El Macho, even when the Freeze Ray couldn't.
Shrink Ray:
Gru's most powerful contraption, the Shrink Ray, is able to decrease the size and mass of an object to whatever size he desires. The description alone sounds unimpressive, but it's rather what is done with it that makes it so dangerous. With the Shrink Ray, Gru is able to shrink the entire moon to the size of a tennis ball that fits in his hand. That's about a volume change of about 130 Sextillion times.
However, its effects don't last forever. Targets will eventually return to their original size. By the “Nefario Principle”, the larger a target, the less time of effect, and it will return back to its original size faster.
Grumobile:
Gru's everyday vehicle. The rocket boosters on the back help to increase his speed. While it isn't especially fast, it excels at its purpose: making people move out of his lane.
Motorcycle:
It's a motorcycle. It isn't ultra high-tech, but it's effective at travelling from point A to point B. Plus, it's a motorcycle. It's stylish.
Ship:
Another goofy looking ship. Gru travels via a ship with a design reflecting his signature pointy nose. It can move at high-speed and shoot out rockets to blow things to smithereens. It also comes equipped with a grappling hook to attach onto a target.
Flying Scooter:
Scooter.
Rocketship:
A rocket that Gru uses as part of his plan to steal the moon. As a rocket, it is very fast and surprisingly agile, as it can perform evasive maneuvers and even barrel rolls whilst travelling at top speed. It even comes with its own Shrinking Ray.
Spacesuit:
In terms of suits, Gru has his spacesuit. It allowed him to survive in the vacuum of space and retrieve a miniaturised moon. It is also pink. In fact, the astronaut Minions also wear pink. I do not know why.
Stealth Suit:
Gru has a Stealth Suit used for…stealth, duh. He uses this alongside his brother to steal the legendary Dumont Diamond. The suit despite having the appearance of a dyed latex condom is surprisingly practical. It can breathe underwater, climb walls with sticky hands, cut through objects with his fingers and hover via an air sack.
Armies:
Joseph Albert Nefari is Gru's gadgeteer and right-hand man, responsible for designing most of his weapons. He usually is found residing in his underground laboratory cooking up a new weapon for Gru. Whilst he isn't physically powerful, he is still very intelligent, and is able to come up with plans both for Gru and independent of Gru.
Minions:
The main bulk of Gru's army are the Minions. These yellow jelly bean gremlins despite their playful and naive nature are surprisingly effective and powerful.
They are annoyingly resilient, surviving basically everything thrown at them. They can survive without oxygen, food or water in the freezing cold. Their bodies can stretch and are near impenetrable. They have also lived on Earth for millions of years, all the way to the age of the dinosaurs. There are about 10,400 of these bois.
They are also able to access hammerspace, pulling weaponry from out of nowhere. The extent of these weapons range from maces and chainsaws, to rocket launchers.
Mega Minions:
Great, he stole Megamind’s name. Mega Minions are Minions with special abilities granted to them by Dr Nefario. Such powers include indestructibility, super strength, flight, and laser vision.
Cookie Robots:
Robots that make cookies. They're useless a good majority of the time, although they did help Gru steal the Shrink Ray.
Scaling:
Megamind:
Misc. Megamind Character:
“All men must choose between two paths.
Good is the path of honor, heroism, and
nobility. Evil... well, it's just cooler.”
Metro City is home to a host of colourful individuals, heroes , and aliens alike. Megamind being the premier supervillain —and later superhero— of Metro City means that he has encountered his own fair share of metahumans. His powerful equipment and unrivalled intellect has allowed him to rise to the top amongst the heroes and villains in Metro City. Hence, he should scale to a good majority of the characters in the mythos.
Roxanne:
“I don't even know if you're listening…
but if you are, you can't give up!”
As Megamind mourned the loss of Metroman, he formed an unlikely relationship with Metroman's presumed love interest Roxanne. Taking the form of Bernard, Megamind eventually fell for Roxanne, and Roxanne fell for him. Upon finding out Megamind had been disguising himself as Bernard to go on dates with her, Roxanne breaks up with him on the spot. Eventually, Roxanne comes around. Megamind rescues Roxanne which leads to them becoming allies and friends.
Roxanne is a smart and determined journalist and Metroman’s formerly alleged girlfriend. She now stands as the mayor of Metro City and current girlfriend of Megamind. Despite not having any abilities, her quick wits makes her useful in aiding Megamind in many of his adventures, such as finding the invisible car to defeat Tighten and battling alongside Megamind to stall against the Doom Syndicate.
Megamind is physically superior to Roxanne, obviously.
Ol’ Chum & Brainbots:
“My sole purpose in life is to look after you!”
Megamind isn't a solo party; he has a whole army backing him up, including his sidekick Minion Ol’ Chum. Ol’ Chum was sent to Earth alongside Megamind to escape the dying world. He is a super intelligent fish, who pilots a mechanical exosuit that Megamind designed for him.
The two of them worked together for years, with Ol’ Chum being the closest thing Megamind had to a friend. However, they needed more horsepower if they wanted to compete against Metroman. Hence, they designed the Brainbots. These jelly pet-like robot monstrosities make up the main bulk of Megamind's army, and have come in clutch on numerous occasions.
Given that Megamind and Chum have fought many of the same enemies, and have worked alongside each other for years, they tend to operate around the same level. Megamind should thus scale to Ol’ Chum. Megamind also survives hits from Tighten that easily destroyed his brainbots, so he should also be relative to his Brainbot army.
Doom Syndicate:
“It was…the Doom Syndicate, sir.”
The Doom Syndicate are Megamind's old evil team who he abandoned. They are now currently working under the leadership of Machiavillian.
Lady Doppler can generate electricity and storms.
Lord Nighty-Knight can manipulate shadows to form constructs.
Behemoth has hot magma and is strong.
Pierre Pressure can hypnotize others and is French.
Megamind should be comparable to all of them physically as he’s hurt and tanked their attacks pretty consistently. Roxanne was able to take attacks from them as well, so Megamind scaling to them is relatively consistent.
Tighten:
“There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth
Fairy, and there is no Queen of England.”
(Oh Tighten…you're right now.)
The biggest incel in the city. When Megamind took over the city following Metroman's presumed death, he quickly grew bored of the easy success; he wanted a rival. He sought out that rival by (accidentally) blessing Hal Stewart with a fraction of Metroman's powers using Metroman's DNA, hoping to create a new rival hero called Titan! Unfortunately, Hal is an absolute idiot, and after being rejected by Roxanne he transformed into the superpowered villain Tighten (because he misheard the name “Titan”). Megamind found a worthy opponent, but not in the way he imagined…
While Megamind is clearly inferior to the raw physical might of Tighten, Megamind is able to fight against him, survive attacks from him and react to his attacks. Megamind fights against Tighten twice throughout the first film, where his mech is able to trade blows and fight relatively on par with Tighten in their first battle, and he himself is able to survive hits from Tighten in the second battle.
Through his wit and intellect, Megamind manages to outsmart Tighten and remove his powers. He is now housed in Megamind's old institution.
Gru:
Misc. Despicable Me Character:
“ One big unicorn, strong and free,
thought he was as happy as he could be...”
Despicable Me has featured a wide array of characters throughout the franchise, ranging from aspiring villains to associations aiming to neutralise villains. We see the story from the perspective of Gru, who rises to become the world’s greatest villain, only to give it up to give his daughters the best life possible. Being so highly ranked, Gru should scale to a good majority of the characters in the verse.
Girls:
“ It's like my heart is a tooth, and it's got a
cavity that can only be filled with children. ”
Originally adopted to distract the Vector, these three girls eventually stole Gru’s heart. Once a cold-hearted villain, these girls convinced Gru to ditch his life of crime, which led to Gru joining the Anti-Villain League. The girls are physically weak, yet are resourceful and witty when needed.
Margo is the brainy, sarcastic and mature eldest child.
Edith is the rebellious, tomboyish middle child.
Anges is the innocent adorable youngest child.
Recently, there has been a new addition: Gru Jr
Gru is physically superior to the girls, obviously.
Minions:
“Banana!”
The Minions are small yellow creatures that serve as Gru's army. They are innocent bean-shaped things who are childish and immature, yet surprisingly intelligent and united. They have a craving to serve under a master, or more accurately a leader. Gru is their current leader, and they are very loyal to him. Likewise, Gru is also very loyal to them.
Gru is shown to be physically comparable and, on occasion, physically superior to the Minions. This is best demonstrated when Gru fought against the Purple Minions, showing superior speed and mobility.
The Minions have proven to be deceptively powerful and skilled. They all share a singular brain cell, and hence are almost always in sync, even when the idea they have is stupid. They also helped build the Great Pyramid of Giza, killed Dracula on his birthday, and I'm pretty certain they killed Napoleon by shooting him in the buttocks with a cannon.
Other Villains:
“ We should be ruling the world!
So what do you say? ”
Gru isn't the only villain around, there are numerous other villains roaming about trying to make themselves a name. Gru has met his own villains and eventually managed to overcome them.
Vicious 6, a notorious group of supervillains.
Vector, second best villain of the 21st Century.
El Macho, Gru's arch nemesis.
Balthazar Bratt, who has been a bad boy.
Maxime Le Mal, the insect man.
He has battles with every one of them with varying performances, eventually coming out on top. He should hence scale to each one of them. As the greatest villain of the 21st Century, his weaponry should also be comparable to theirs, at least for basic gear.
Vector:
“VECTOR!! That's me. 'Cause I'm committing
crimes with both direction and magnitude.
OH YEAH!”
You know him. You love him. Behold, the Vector! The Vector is Gru's greatest rival to being the greatest supervillain of the 21st Century. Shown up by Gru when his latest invention failed, Vector swore to steal the moon to regain his honor. He stole a Shrinking Ray that Gru had, which began a war on trying to be the first to steal the moon between the two.
In the Universe, Gru is very likely physically superior to the Vector. Gru's children are pretty confident that Gru would “kick Vector's butt” in crude terms, and the Vector supports this by proceeding to immediately attempt to flee via an escape pod upon confrontation with Gru. Gru also pretty easily bypassed the Vector's technological defenses, and combined with the Vector needing to steal Gru's shrink Ray, suggests that Gru overall is better —both in physicals and in gear.
The Vector isn't the strongest character in the universe —in fact he is likely one of the weaker characters— but he has proven surprisingly strong and durable. He has survived a ridiculous amount of physical trauma and just walked it off. Gru being physically stronger means that Gru likely scales above that. As it stands, the Vector is currently stranded on Mars, having “escaped” the moon.
He also has the honor of being the most meme-able character out of the entire franchise.
Power:
When it comes to power, there are 2 different discussions:
Physical Strength, and Weaponry Power.
In terms of physicals, both are clearly far stronger and more durable than your typical human. Megamind is out there surviving attacks from Titan that send him flying, whilst Gru is withstanding nuclear bombs straight to the face.
Starting with Gru, he has a lot of feats putting his physicals in the town ranges of power; Such as the previously mentioned withstanding nuclear bombs fear, as well as Purple Minions also eating nuclear bombs.
Gru has many more feats of strength and durability that put him into the Kiloton ranges, such as the minions surviving explosions on top of a huge mass of bubblegum, orKevin the minion and Scarlet Overdrive were able to survive a nuclear explosion.
(16.5 Kilotons & 15.1 Kilotons respectively)
Most impressively, Gru is physically comparable to the Vector, who survived getting pushed into space by the Moon expanding, which yields a staggering 115 Kilotons of TNT.
For Megamind, he can walk off parts of his base exploding and with his power gloves, flip the Mega-Megamind, needing over 150 Tons of TNT.
He should also be comparable to Tighten, who exploded a Megamind hollowgram yielding 46.2 Kilotons of TNT, which more than matches the middle end of Gru's strength.
The highest end for Megamind comes from the Doom Syndicate Villain Lady Doppler. She is able to create massive City wide spanning storms, needing 2.61 Gigatons of TNT of energy, which is over 7,000 times greater than Gru's best scaling.
Of course, the story doesn't end there. Both Gru and Megamind have a plethora of weapons that allow them to far exceed their own physical strength. So how powerful are their weapons?
One of Gru's minions was given a laser that could fire a hole through the planet, hitting a satellite, which would need 32.3 Megatons of TNT.
Meanwhile, Megamind's gear has enough potency to blast a portion of Metro City into space, which requires over 80 Teratons of TNT, over 2,500,000 times greater than the Minion's laser that blasted through Earth.
He would later do something similar in the sequel movie. In 6 months, he constructed rockets powerful enough to propel a portion of Metro City onto the moon. This would require around 112 Gigatons of TNT to achieve.
Megamind operating on this scale is generally consistent throughout the series. His contraptions are described as world threatening, and he has operated on massive scales before, such as “turning the Atlantic Ocean into Jell-O”. Such a task when taken at face value would need 214 Teratons of TNT.
This is further supported by the Death Ray, which can fire the full concentrated energy of the sun at a single point. The film is vague on the nature of how the Death Ray works and how exactly it draws power from the sun. However, take it at face value, the Death Ray was channeling 83 Petatons of TNT, enough to wipe away multiple continents.
Speed:
Both Megamind and Gru, despite seeming to be regular humans, have proven to be very fast. They are shown to be some of the fastest characters in the verse. Gru can easily outmaneuver Purple Minions while Megamind avoids attacks from the Doom Syndicate.
For a starting point, Gru is easily superhuman. He is easily able to slide over and dodge missiles from the Vector. Such a showing would require speeds of about Mach 7, or 7 times the speed of sound.
Gru's greatest feats of speed come from a bunch of Moon Shenanigans, as those are naturally on the largest scale. For instance, his ship is able to leave Earth in a few seconds, which requires speeds of up to Mach 856, which is over 25 times the escape velocity of Earth.
We see in the video games that Gru has to dodge asteroids while piloting this trip. The speed of his spaceship should hence scale to his own reaction speed, as he needs to react to asteroids moving at Mach 856 relative to him. The game supports this level of speed, with the spaceship returning to Earth at Mach 300.
Gru’s equipment operating on this scale of speed is supported by his Shrink Ray. His shrink ray could send pulses across the moon in less than 10 seconds, which would need a speed of Mach 1990.
Most impressively, the Vector in the Mooned Shorts himself around the moon at Mach 8306. The Vector manages to catch himself on some rocks to slow him down whilst moving at this speed, hence it should scale to his reaction speed.
Meanwhile, for Megamind, he and Minion managed to walk from Metro City to the Grand Canyon within a 50 minute time frame. Assuming a time frame of 20 minutes, this would result in a speed of Mach 6. He walked at this speed by the way.
Supersonic speed in Megamind is supported by Tighten. When escaping Megamind (who was disguised as Metroman), Tighten forms a sonic boom when flying away. Sonic booms are formed when something moves faster than sound, or Mach 1.
However, the most impressive speed feats for Megamind would come from Lady Doppler and her lightning. Megamind can dodge her lightning at Mach 493. However, even faster is Lady Doppler dodging her own lightning, which needs Mach 1306.
Tertiary factors:
If you couldn't tell from that huge forehead of his, Megamind is a genius. He creates all of his gadgets alongside Chum, with numerous of them bending the laws of physics. He has machines that can destroy atoms, dehydrate people into blue cubes, move backwards and forwards through time, and harness the full energy of the sun. It is even implied in Megamind Rules! that Megamind’s intelligence is a superpower, granting him super intellect in a similar manner that Metroman has super strength and speed.
He is also pretty skilled and adaptable. While his martial arts prowess is questionable, he is capable of formulating complex plans on the spot and bounce back quickly from defeat. He quickly comes up with a plan to scare Tighten away as Metroman, and later defeat Tighten when he returns. He also quickly comes up with a plan to defeat the Doom Syndicate in the time it took for Metro City to launch into the sky. He also has a surprising amount of stamina, being able to be thrown around by Tighten and remain standing despite being injured. He can continuously fight with supervillains over several days and nights before he gets exhausted and overworks himself.
Gru is a genius. He has also created a good portion of his gadgets, however the credit goes to Dr Nefario for making a good portion of his weaponry and arsenal. He is still very intelligent, being able to form plans to steal the Zodiac Stone, the Shrink Ray, and even the entire Moon. He has also shown great combat intelligence, being able to outsmart skilled fighters such as El Macho and Balthazar Bratt.
He is also a fairly skilled fighter. While he is not in prime physical condition, he is still able to keep up with the best fighters in his universe. He can effortlessly dodge missiles, maintain a battle against Purple El Macho, and defeat Baltabore Brat in his own field: an epic dance battle. Not too shabby.
Weaknesses:
Megamind:
Megamind has a pretty big ego which can cause him to misread a scenario. He also has a huge love for theatrics, and loves to partake in the whole Hero Versus Villain show. This can all come back to kick him in the butt, such as his first fight from Tighten quickly becoming him fleeing for his life. He also loses a good deal of versatility without his gear, although he usually has his De-gun equipped on him. Additionally, his most powerful weapon, the Death Ray, requires time to charge up. He is also scared of cockroaches.
Gru:
Regardless of his many achievements, Gru is still human. He is susceptible to all our human weaknesses, such as running out of stamina and needing oxygen. He is also highly reliant on his gear for his abilities; without them, he loses most of his versatility. Luckily, he keeps some gear on him at all times, such as his Freeze Ray. He also has a tendency to move instinctively without a solid plan, and is prone to being annoyed easily. He also hates Pollito the chicken.
FAQs:
Metroman Scaling:
“It's taken me a long time for me to find my
calling. Now, it's time you found yours.”
For the longest time, Metroman and Megamind was the biggest rivalry in the City. It was a consistent battle; a duel between the forces of good and evil that lasted years, with Metroman usually coming out on top. However, everything changed following Metroman's death and Megamind's victory.
Metroman, of course, did not actually die. He retired and faked his death to seek out his passion: Music. Metroman, real name “Wayne Scott”, is the most powerful character in the Megamind Mythos, and some of the most impressive feats.
He had an entire midlife crisis in the span of less than a second. After this midlife crisis, he was able to see the Death Ray in slow motion, needing him to be able to move at 76.1% the speed of light.
So why have I not mentioned Metroman yet?
Wouldn't Metroman be relevant for Megamind's scaling? Well, Megamind does not scale to Metroman.
He doesn't scale at all.
It is introduced to us at the beginning of the film that Megamind has never once defeated Metroman in a fight. This is supported by the Head of story who stated that Metroman found no challenge in battling Megamind.
This is supported in the film, where Megamind believed that his Death Ray —his most powerful weapon— wouldn't have been enough to defeat Metroman. Everyone was surprised when it worked, including Megamind himself. The film even implies that Metroman could have survived the Death Ray if he wanted to, given that he faked his weakness to copper in order to sell his defeat.
To put perspective on the scale of the difference between Megamind and Metroman, we look towards Tighten. Tighten —who is physically superior to Megamind— was given his abilities from the DNA of Metroman. How much DNA you may ask?
One piece of dandruff.
Machiavillain Scaling:
“ Ready for the first clue? ”
Machiavillian is the primary antagonist of Megamind Rules, acting as the former teacher of villainy for Megamind and the current leader of the Doom Syndicate. Furious upon Megamind's turn to the side of good, he enacted a scheme to frame Megamind for major crimes to spoil his reputation.
Interestingly enough, he doesn't really fight anybody head-on. He only really redirects an attack from Lady Doppler back at her, and that's about as close to a physical confrontation we get.
He is far more powerful with the B.I.N.K.E.Y, Megamind’s binky that he was given before being sent to Earth, which he used to destroy a 10 mile meteor that was going to crush the city. Such a feat would require 36.0 Gigatons of TNT.
However, Megamind defeats him by taking away the Binky, which destroys his physical form and gets rid of his power. Megamind doesn’t battle Machiavillian with the B.I.N.K.E.Y outright. It is described as the most powerful weapon, so no one really scales to the B.I.N.K.E.Y either.
Massively faster than light?
This one is funny. During Megamind's origin story, Megamind and Metroman were both sent to Earth from dying planets located in another galaxy. During the trip, Megamind and Metroman are shown reacting to each other.
The nearest galaxy to earth is 25,000 light years away, requiring the spaceship to move millions or even billions of times faster than light. So, Megamind is massively faster than light?
Not quite. Ignoring how this is an exaggerated retelling of Megamind's story from Megamind himself, even giving the benefit of the doubt, Megamind doesn't react to anything. He doesn't pilot the ship around any asteroids or dodge debris. He just ragdolls for the entire trip.
Most of the massively faster than light feats that occur in Megamind or Despicable Me have a similar issue. The feat isn't applicable to reaction speed as no one really reacts to it. Such examples include: A rocket that cockroaches to Alpha Centauri B, or Vector flying to the Moon.
A good demonstration of the difference would actually scale to speed would be Gru flying to the moon. In the video game, he has to avoid asteroids while flying to the moon. He actually has to react to something, unlike the previously mentioned feat. For the first part of the trip, Gru should be comparable (at least reaction wise) to the speed of the spaceship. Gru does scale.
However, the second section of the trip —whilst it is far faster at 0.175c— does not scale to Gru. Gru doesn't react to anything whilst moving at this speed. Hence, he does not scale.
Cloud creation feat:
Megamind's 2.61 Gigaton physicality comes from Doom Syndicate member Lady Doppler creating city-spanning storms. It is a contentious feat as it buffs Megamind from the Town levels of power (Kilotons of TNT) to the Mountain levels (Gigatons of TNT), an increase of several thousand fold.
The film and TV show do not exactly specify the exact nature of the Doom Syndicate's abilities and how they function, however we can infer. On occasion, we see Lady Doppler creating similar city-spanning storms by firing her own lightning, which implies that she creates the storm with her own power rather than a special ability.
While Megamind hasn't been hit by a thundercloud, Megamind and even Roxanne disguised as Megamind have both taken electricity blasts from Lady Doppler.
While it might seem wild how Megamind would scale so high, it is relatively consistent within the series. Brainbots are able to form enormous clouds on two separate occasions. Megamind being comparable to the storms that Lady Doppler creates makes reasonable sense and is relatively consistent. Hence the 2.61 Gigaton value is applicable.
Who's Who?
“Who's Who?” is a series made in 2023 for Tiktok & YouTube. It has 4 episodes so far and is narrated by Gru as he introduces a named Minion and fun facts and information about them. The 4 Minions mentioned are Jude, Marc, Sonny, and Scott.
Somehow, in 4 episodes, they are already causing me trouble.
In Who's Who Pt 4, Scott's episode, he is revealed to be someone who farts a lot—bare with me on this one, hear me out. Later in the short, he is shown shaking the entire Earth with his farts, which would require enough energy to destroy planets.
Minions can destroy planets? Case closed? Not quite. The series is dubiously canon at best. It serves as a promotion to kids on YouTube and Tiktok to advertise rather than actual content in Universe, which is supported by the change in animation style to a sketchy, more storybook style. It isn't meant to be taken seriously and this is made evident when the reasoning on why the Minions are unaffected by Scott's farts is that they have no nose. Even then Scott’s big ass fart is definitely an outlier —as it is far above any other value in the series, and hence shouldn't be used. Still funny though that this nearly changed the verdict during research to an easy Gru W.
Advertisement:
Here's a thirty second advertisement that I can't afford to skip. In collaboration with King Hawaiian Rolls, Despicable Me 4 has an advertisement whereby the Minions accidentally split the moon.
Pretty obviously, this is non-canon. Not only is it an advertisement, but it's clearly contradicted by the canon where the Moon still exists in one whole. Still worth mentioning if anyone is curious.
Here’s child screaming loudly:
This is a showing that I came across while researching for this blog. It's funny so I wanted to mention it. When escaping a purple minion, the Minion does…questionable things to Agnes’s unicorn.
(Is ....I-is that allowed?!?!)
In response, Agnes screams loud enough to shatter a stone structure, which is the reasonable response to be fair. The phenomenon with sound is that it takes a lot of energy to generate, but has very minimal destructive capabilities. In order to crack stone, you'll need a sound of 240 decibels —according to a 2007 research paper from the University of Pretoria. A sound of 240 dB from that distance requires energy equivalent to 25.3 Kilotons of TNT.
Of course, like most feats stemming from sound, this is likely unintended. The creators likely didn't know that it required so much energy in order to crack stone, and even if they knew they likely just don't care. I just thought it would be funny to bring up.
Faster than Light?
Can we stop dodging “lasers” for one minute?
Lasers (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) are extremely important to fights between grounded characters as light is….well, light speed. Having the speed to react to light, even a small percentage of it, is extremely impressive as light is just really fast.
However, not all energy attacks are necessarily light. For instance, electric ions in the plasma propelled from a plasma engine travel at 180,000 km/s. That's fast, but that's not even a fraction o a percent of the real deal.
Each feat are at least a little controversial, with arguments for and against them being light speed. In order for lasers or beams of light to be accepted, they should meet follow a few properties of light:
The beam moves in a straight line
The beam can reflect and refracts in a new medium
The beam moves at a constant speed within the same medium
The beam is made up of light or photons
It has an origin of realistic source
It is stated to be lightspeed.
The more of these qualities the beam demonstrates, the merrier. Additionally, if it is stated to be lightspeed, then it's lightspeed. That’s pretty hard to deny. Meanwhile, there are a few criteria that might prove that a beam is not light-based:
It goes against the rules above.
It is tangible and can be interacted with physically by normal humans.
There are a few other properties of light that vary depending on the scenario, such as causing explosions or having force and all of the such. There's a whole lot of theoretical physics about light but I'm not knowledgeable enough about that (yet) to explain it, and quite frankly I doubt the writers would care so much about how light works.
Both Megamind and Gru have dodged energy blasts and “Lasers” before. Let's analyse each of them.
Megamind:
Death Ray:
The Death Ray is a massive orbital laser ray that draws power from the sun. Out of all the lasers here, the Death Ray is the one that follows the most properties above. The beam comes from a realistic source of origin, drawing upon solar energy from the sun. It travels in a straight line, moves at a constant speed in air, and is referred to as a “beam of light” in the novel.
The beam has sufficient evidence to prove that it can be a lightspeed laser. However, the issue is that no one reacts to it. The only person who could perceive it is Metroman, who is vastly faster than anyone else in the series. The only other character who “reacts” to it is the robot Mega-Megamind, who moves his hand to block the Death Ray.
This is likely cinematic animation rather than an actual feat. By looking at the first two frames, the beam of light is shown travelling across the entire screen whilst the Robot is stationary. I doubt this would be considered as reacting.
Tighten Laser Vision:
Tighten laser vision appears to follow most properties of a laser. It moves in a straight line, melts through objects, and is called a laser. There are some things against it, such as the beam shown force, but for all intents and purposes, it's a laser.
So why does Megamind not scale? To put it bluntly, Tighten has a terrible aim and is an idiot. Megamind doesn't move in tandem or dodge these beams point blank because Tighten can barely aim.
The closest feat we have to a point-blank dodging feat is Megamind ejecting himself out of his mech before Tighten can use his laser eyes. However, when we break it down frame by frame, Megamind isn't even there when Tighten shoots his lasers.
The other closest thing we have to laser dodging is Megamind dodging around his lasers. Megamind isn't dodging his lasers firing at him, he is rather dodging the lasers as they move side to side rather than coming out from his eyes. To put it more crudely, Megamind is moving faster than Tighten can turn his head. He isn't moving faster than the lasers themselves.
Other lasers:
There's a few other lasers shown in the Peacock Megamind sequels, one of which being this laser gauntlet. It has a realistic source of origin, being heat based, travels in straight lines, and is focused through a glass lens which implies refraction. There's enough to suggest that it could be an lightspeed laser.
The Go Fish Gang, people comparable to Megamind, are shown being able to dodge these lasers relatively point blank. The only thing that goes against the beams being light-based is that it causes an explosion upon impact. Whilst it doesn't immediately disprove it as not a laser, it is a knock against it.
Luckily, there are multiple other lasers that are more reliable. Such as Knighty Knight dodging a laser from Megamind. While it isn't stated to be a laser, it travels in a straight line, and burns through objects, which could suggest it is a laser. Such a feat would require speeds about 3.79% the speed of light.
Additionally, these lasers shown above in Megamind's security system also seem to follow a good majority of the properties of lasers as listed above. They travel in a straight line, move at a constant speed, reflect off metal, and emit light themselves. Additionally, there's little evidence against them being lasers other than exploding Chum's body, which can be caused by the high amount of energy in the lasers.
There's adequate evidence to suggest that these lasers are light speed. Chum moving out of the way of one of these lasers would require 0.766c. That’s more than three quarters of light speed, so pretty fast.
Gru:
Freeze Ray
This one is a bit odd. The Freeze Ray supposedly fires a “fast-moving “cryogenic laser that freezes targets upon contact”. Even though it doesn't look like a laser, it does move in straight lines and doesn't seem to exert a force.
Giving the benefit of the doubt, I'll accept this as light speed. El Macho would have to be blocking the Freeze Ray at 0.513c, which Gru should scale to.
Dancing
At the Cinco De Mayo Party, Gru shifts positions between flashes of light to get rid of Antonio, which turns out…
…less than well for him.
Many have argued this to be a faster-than-light showing, however this holds the same problem as Tighten's heat vision. Gru is moving in between the period where the lights rotate to flash the camera, he isn't actually dodging or moving faster than light. Similarly to how Megamind is moving faster than Tighten turning his head, Gru is moving faster than a Disco ball spinning. It's still fast, but nowhere near light speed.
How big is Megamind's Forehead?

This debate is extremely close, with very dynamic characters with a multitude of solid means of achieving victory with their expansive array of gear and allies. Before we get into that, let's run over the less debatable aspect: statistics.
In terms of physical strength and raw power, Megamind has the clear lead. His fights with the Doom Syndicate give him attack potency and durability at 2.61 Gigatons of TNT, which is over 20,000 times greater than the best physical feats that Gru can compare to at only around 115 Kilotons of TNT. Gru's technology meanwhile can output energy around 30 Megatons of TNT, which is still inferior to Megamind's own physicality. Meanwhile, Megamind's best gear outputs at least 80 Teratons of TNT.
In terms of speed, it is a tad more contentious. On the lower ends, both of them clearly display speeds a few times faster than sound: I.e. Gru dodging missiles at Mach 7, and Megamind power walking at Mach 6 which puts them in similar ballparks. For the Middle End, Gru should also be comparable to the Vector, who flew around the moon at Mach 8306. That's about 6 times faster than Lady Doppler dodging her own lightning at Mach 1306. For their higher ends, Megamind has feats reaching about 0.77c, which is slightly faster than Gru's laser dodging 0.51c feat. This means that for the Middle ends, Gru would be faster, while Megamind would be slightly faster for the Higher ends.
They have a few smaller advantages here and there. Megamind has the larger ego, and can be rather clumsy and silly, compared to Gru who is comparatively more mature and level-headed. Gru is more agile and mobile, more skilled in close quarters combat, and has more consistent Town Level showings. Megamind meanwhile is far more intelligent; he is responsible for creating his weapons, unlike Gru who had Dr Nefario make his weapons.
In terms of armies, the Minions also have an oddly high level of success, and are much more independent compared to the Brainbots. In terms of their right-hand man, Ol' Chum (Minion) is reliant on Megamind to give commands, and doubts himself when he is forced to lead. Dr Nefario, Gru's right hand man, is completely willing to work independently from Gru's command. This all results in Gru's army being far more independent than Megamind's army. Megamind is his team's linchpin —as soon as Megamind himself goes down, his army basically falls. If Gru goes down, Megamind still has to deal with his minion army.
Yet again, the Brainbots are far more unified in working to a collective purpose. The Minions have a tendency to sidetrack and do their own thing, which leaves Gru in more vulnerable positions. While his army can function without him, Gru is still the heavy hitter, and the Minions become significantly less dangerous without the versatility and genius that Gru brings. The Brainbots are likely more powerful and versatile. The Brainbots and Ol’ Chum also scale to Megamind, meaning that they have the physical advantage over the Minions. In terms of abilities, the Minions specifically do not have a counter to Porta-prisons, which can trap Metahumans such as the Doom Syndicate and are equipped inside every Brainbot.
Ultimately, a battle between glass cannons (or characters that can take each other out in a single attack) comes down to who is going to get that hit first. It is funny how many of that we have had this year.
Gru potentially has the speed advantage —potentially up to 6 times faster — does give him favour in a quick draw. however in context it is less significant than it seems. Let’s discuss in depth about their gear.
Their arsenal match each other in many ways. Both have a multitude of lasers and explosives, both have freeze rays and both have a double jump — Gru has a double jump via his air gun. Some of their gear is also useless. Megamind’s stone of transference is mostly useless, as Gru is a human without superpowers and hence has no powers to transfer. Megamind can potentially swap to get Metroman’s abilities, but he becomes as dumb as bricks. Similarly, Gru’s Zodiac Stone is equally useless, as it only works on one day in the year.
Overall, Megamind has the more versatile toolkit. In terms of the middle tier gear, Gru can fire hot energy blasts, has a sticky arm made from goo, and a taser. That pales in comparison to the amount of options Megamind has, with a gun that can incapacitate Gru with sticky goo, Shrink Bombs that can shrink Gru, and a whole range of mechs and armours he can use. For their best gear, Gru has the Shrink Ray. The Shrink Ray bypasses durability, and Megamind has no real defences against it, so it would give Gru the victory if he were to use it. Similarly, I don’t think Megamind has any resistance to knock out gas from the Fart Gun. Gru has 2 weapons that can bypass Megamind’s durability. Meanwhile Megamind has his own Knockout Gas, Portal Bazooka, Death Ray, and the swiss army knife that is the De-Gun. Megamind has 4 weapons that can bypass Gru’s durability, giving him the edge —and that’s not even mentioning power.
The gap between the two gear sets widens when considering the strength difference between the two. Megamind’s is several thousand times stronger than Gru's gear, and it reflects heavily on how their gear interacts. Using their Freeze Rays for example, Megamind would be able to break free of Gru’s ice constructs in a similar way to how El Macho did, given that he is stronger. Meanwhile, Gru will struggle to break free from Megamind’s ice constructs as he is weaker. That means a good majority of Megamind’s gear becomes extra effective against Gru, even the weaker gear such as the Forget-Me Stick. On the other hand, Gru’s weapons become largely ineffective, with only his two one-shotting weapons being able to get through Megamind’s ridiculous durability edge.
Even with a speed advantage, Gru would be hard-pressed to find any weapon that could effectively injure Megamind. Neither of his two one-shotting weapons are his go-to options, so it is unlikely that Gru would look to them for his beginning plays. This is unlike Megamind whose half of his one-shotting options —the De-Gun and the Portal Bazooka— are his go-to weapons.
Best case scenario for Gru, it would be a difficult battle. He still needs to deal with all of Megamind's gear —including avoiding all of his weaponry that would do severe damage to him at worst— and defeat all of his army whilst using either one of two specific weapons to bypass Megamind’s durability. Even then, Megamind is a hard opponent to find with his disguise watch, much less hit. In the scenario where both are given their high end of speed, Megamind is slightly faster, and the victor becomes clear cut.
Overall, Megamind’s win conditions seem far more probable. Gru's greatest chance of victory stems from his speed advantage —which depending on the feats that are used, he might not even have the speed advantage. Meanwhile, Megamind has the advantage for the rest of the major categories. He has greater physical strength and raw power. His Brainbot army having greater abilities and more firepower would make them more than able to handle the Minions. He also has a more varied arsenal and more relevant gear.
The Felonious Gru is a vicious opponent, but the Defender of Metro City has greater power, a more than comparable army, and vast sums of unstoppable gear would overcome the Anti-Villain League’s top operative more times than not.
