Philza Minecraft VS Toriel Dreemurr ( Dream SMP VS Undertale )
“War does not determine who is right –only who is left.”
—Bertrand Russell
#Technoblade25
Go check out the new Technoblade Video, it might be the last new Technoblade content to ever come out for a while, so go support it when you can. Thank you.
Two protective parental figures from famous indie games who turned isolationist following a war that took the life of their sons. While powerful, they mostly live a peaceful life away from the conflict, serving as guardians and guides to those they presume ally. They hold a close relationship with morally-gray anthropomorphic warriors who are renowned for their blood-lust, yet who are actually kind and wise people. Toriel is divorced with Asgore whilst Philza is best friends with Technoblade.
Philza, the Angel of Death, best friend of the Blood God.
Toriel, the old lady behind the walls and former Queen of the Underground.
War corrupts us, warps our pride into blood-lust and our progress into loss. In the aftermath, all that remains are the shattered pieces; our relationships left unmended, left for those unfortunate enough to survive to rebuild. None understand this more than Philza Minecraft and Toriel Dreemurr.
Technically this is my #Technoblade25 contribution. Technically Rocket Raccoon VS Stitch was my contribution, but this is dedicated towards him so….. I'm really excited to cover Undertale and Minecraft again, but to hopefully far greater detail. This took several months of work, so without further ado, I hope you enjoy it.
Fanart:
Ground Rules:
No outside help will be given.
No outside non-standard gear.
They will be in character. They will also be given their high-end feats in line with what makes sense for their character.
They will be given only canon material.
For Toriel, given that she is roughly the same character throughout all 4 routes of Undertale —Genocide, Neutral, Pacifist, and True Pacifist— all events across the original Undertale game will be considered. Additional materials such as the artbooks will also be considered. Undertale Yellow is unfortunately not canon to the original game and thus will not be used. Deltrarune is considered a Secondary Canon.
Material considered:
Undertale
Undertale Artbook
Deltarune
Undertale Yellow
For Philza, all canonical events across the mythos will be considered, which includes the Tales from the SMP. Additional materials that are dubiously canon —mostly streams that are not directly related to the lore— will be considered secondary canon where it can be used unless it contradicts something from the main canon. Given that the skill of the player is consistent regardless of the continuity, other materials such as MCC and Minecraft Mondays will be used to access Philza's skill unless contradictory to canon. Similarly, given that all Minecraft characters are based on Steve, Steve's adventures through the original Minecraft game, Minecraft Legends, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Story Mode, will be considered. Sad-ist animations are considered Secondary Canon.
Material Considered:
Dream SMP Streams
Tales from the SMP
Sadi-ist animations
Minecraft
Minecraft Monday
Minecraft Championships
Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft Legends
Minecraft Story Mode

Philza:
“ Things, buildings, they can be replaced. People
can't be replaced. I'm not losing anyone else.”
Fireworks grind its way through the dirt. Black skulls explode in screams. Everyone is yelling, fighting over the ruins of the country they had once fought for. It started as a demand for unique identity, became a statement for independence, and birthed a power struggle in the name of right and wrong.
Now above the wreckage, a kneeling father sobbed —with his wings having been burnt off in the fire. He hugs his son, with the sword that had killed him still pierced through his chest.
In the fire, the Angel of Death had come to a conclusion: Absolute power corrupts absolutely, thus the government must fall.
Philza is a kind and compassionate realist, and is the one the oldest and wisest individuals on the server. He made his mark decently late into the SMP’s events as Wilbur’s biological father, although his origins extend far before that.
Philza is incredibly old, being hundreds or even thousands of years old. He has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, experienced loss and vengeance, and met friends and family —including an old friend, Technoblade. There are tales in the SMP, of a time before theirs, where an empire that resided in Antarctica once conquered the world.
* Legends even state that he had gone 5 years in a hardcore world without dying, hence why he only has one canonical life.
In 2020, November 16th, Philza received a letter from his son. They spoke of glory and success, but Philza could read between the lines. As he flew into the SMP, he was greeted with horror. There was fighting everywhere, a dictator called Schlatt ruled over the supposedly great country, and a rebellion was in action.
His son sat quietly in a secluded room, mumbling to himself about a grand finale. He bargained to no avail, for Wilbur had decided on suicide. Lunging for Wilbur as he pushed a button linked to explosives, he wrapped his wings around Wilbur as L’manberg burst into explosions. Upon seeing his fallen country, Wilbur turned to his father.
His son begged for death.
Philza didn't know what else to do.
The days that followed were turbulent. Phil found residence in L'Manberg, but his faith in the president, Tubbo, was beginning to falter. Tubbo would steal from his citizens under the pretense of “taxes” to fund his own projects, created “panic rooms” in which he would abandon L’maberg in the case of danger, and tensions with Dream were only rising.
Tommy getting exiled was the smoking gun that convinced Philza that he was on the right side of history. Not long following Tommy's exile, Tubbo followed by three other men knocked on his door. They wore aprons covered in blood, and wielded heavy battle axes.
The Butcher Army had come for Technoblade.
Philza was Technoblade's closest friend, and they needed Technoblade for a stunt. They were to execute him for his crimes against the country to regain their honor, and Philza was their means.
They ransacked and vandalized his house in search of evidence, threatening him for any snippet of information. Eventually, Tubbo found Techno's compass and put Philza under house arrest for refusing to cooperate.
This new government, he believed, had twisted these people. The power had corrupted his friends into savages, and he was disgusted. As an anvil hung over his old friend's head, Philza had made his decision.
He needed to teach a lesson.
Thus always to tyrants!
With the help of Technoblade, Philza escaped to his cabins in the arctic, and together they began to scheme the greatest plot the server will see.
Philza is a complex personality who is often unsung when it comes to his depth and journey. He is flawed, yet he always pursues what he believes in. Treat Philza with kindness? He will repay that kindness tenfold. He will offer his house, his valuables, and his friendship to those who have earned his trust. But treat Philza with injustice, abuse his empathy and hunt his friends? He will repay that injustice a thousand times over.
Thus the Angel of Death sings out a cry,
as the crows call for disaster.
“For you the world, Phil.” —Technoblade
Toriel:
“If a human ever comes through this door,
Could you please, please promise something?
Watch over them, and protect them, will you not?”
You made a mistake. You slipped off Mount Ebott, tumbling down from its side into a great hole. The darkness begins to consume you as you fall into a grave way deeper down. You flail about as your demise inches closer. The ground accelerates towards you before…
You're… alive? And…greeted by a talking flower? Their name is “Flowey”, and they teach you about fighting before promptly attempting to murder a child. A fireball zooms past you, knocking away the psychopathic flower. The fireball had come from…a humanoid goat? You aren't on the surface anymore.
Toriel is a kind-hearted monster who acts as the caretaker/maternal figure in the Ruins. She guides you through the first area of the game, teaching you the basic movements, puzzles and interactions, and preaches that killing is never allowed. She lives alone, with the sole purpose of protecting any human that falls into the Underground.
* Toriel's name is a spin on the word “Tutorial”.
Thousands of years ago, Monsters and Humans coexisted on the surface. They lived in peace for centuries until a war waged out between the two races. The humans persevered as victorious, and sealed the monsters Underground, never to come back to the surface.
Toriel was once the queen of the Underground, married to Asgore Dreemurr. They had a son, Asriel Dreemurr, and they lived happily together for years. Suddenly, a child fell into the Underground by the name of “Chara”. She was the first one ever. Trapped with no way to escape, Chara was adopted by the Dreemurr family and grew up alongside Asriel as part of the family.
* As-gore + To-riel = As-riel
However, one day the human suffered a fatal wound. Asriel absorbed her soul and rushed to the surface, in plea for human help. Thinking that Asriel had killed the human child, the humans attacked.
The Underground has lost two children.
Asgore was enraged, declaring war on humanity and swearing to kill any human who falls into the Underground. Toriel, disgusted, fled to the Ruins and gave the first human a proper burial. She vowed to never let another child die on her watch.
She failed. Before you arrived, six other humans had fallen and perished in the Underground. She wouldn't fail again, and thus you could not leave. Toriel is no saint. She can be obsessed with her goals, and can also feel rather lonely.
But she isn't evil. After a fight, she apologizes and lets the human leave the Ruins. Toriel is one of the most strong-minded, compassionate and kind monsters in the Underground. Just as Sans said…
“…someone who sincerely likes bad jokes has an integrity you can’t say “no” to.” —Sans
Scaling:
Philza:
General Players:
“There is so much more to the world.
Go explore it, it is all yours.”
The Dream SMP is a multiplayer Minecraft server home to many different personalities. Among them is Philza Minecraft. Making his presence known just before the Chaos War, Philza has made himself a name for being highly dependable and empathic, yet dangerous nonetheless.
Going meta, all Dream SMP members are based on the same minecrafter template; all of whom are different alternate skins to Minecraft Steve. Thus they technically should all be comparable to each other as, besides gear and skill, they are the same.
In lore, Philza is a highly skilled fighter and extraordinary support player. He is a good fighter, on par if not superior to experienced warriors such as Tommy and Tubbo, and is only really behind the really high tiers like Technoblade and Dream. With his plethora of experiences and achievements, Philza’s alias as the Angel of Death was certainly well earned.
The Syndicate:
“Sic Semper Tyrannis”
The Syndicate is a collective network of anarchists cooperating together in opposition to tyranny in the server. Formed by Technoblade “Protesilaus” and Philza “Zephyrus”, the group is primarily composed of their most trusted allies: Ranboo "Lethe” and Nikachu “Nemesis”.
* Zephyrus is the God of the West Wing and Spring, which often symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. He is known for being the kindest and most favorable among the wings.
Contractually, there is no leader. Philza and Technoblade are the main funders for the group, supplying weapons and armor. Other than Connereatspants and whoever ‘Harpocates' represents, the Syndicate is made up of close friends, and they routinely spar against each other in a massive training room under Philza's house.
Given that all their gear comes from Philza and Technoblade and that Philza is more skilled and experienced than Ranboo and Niki, it stands to reason that Philza should scale to its members, including…
Technoblade:
“ Those who treat me with kindness, I will repay that kindness tenfold. And those that treat me with injustice, that use me, that hunt me down, that hurt my friends, I shall repay that injustice a thousand times over. ”
Technoblade is legendary among the Dream SMP for being a fiercely dangerous warrior. He is able to fight entire wars as a one-man army, is responsible for the Manberg Festival Slaughter, helped turn the tides in the Pogtopia–Manberg War, and was infamously victorious in a war against all of L’manberg's members solo—twice! (Chaos War and Doomsday War) He has one of the best win-rates in the entire Dream SMP and the skills to back it up, proven by the fact that he has all of his canon lives. Technoblade is one of the best PVPers out there.
That being said, Technoblade is not infallible. There are a few members that can give him a run for his money. Philza is one of them. Not only do they work side-by-side with one another, they train together and work on equal footing.
Outside of the Dream SMP, Philza has shown to be a valuable asset to Technoblade, fighting shoulder to shoulder with him in Minecraft Championships, Minecraft Monday, and SMP Earth as the Antarctic Empire. While clearly inferior when it comes to raw combat and skill, The Blood God and the Angel of Death are equals, rivals, and friends.
Dream:
“ If... Respect is the only thing protecting you from... a knife in the back… then respect is nothing, right? ”
Scaling to Technoblade consequently scales him to the Green boi himself. In the $100,000 MrBeast Duel between Technoblade and Dream, Technoblade emerged victorious with a lead of 6‐4. Both Technoblade and Dream are roughly equivalent when it comes to fighting skill, with both of them admitting that the $100,000 duel could have gone either way. This equal standing in skill is supported by Minecraft Championships, where both Dream and Technoblade constantly compete for top positions.
In canon, Technoblade and Philza are some of the few individuals to not be afraid of Dream. As a matter-of-fact, Dream holds Technoblade in very high regard: Teaming up with him multiple times, notably in Doomsday War, refusing to chase Tommy when he fled to Philza's house following the Pandora's Vault Jailbreak, and backing down when Technoblade protected Tommy. Furthermore, despite working with Punz, one of Minecraft's most skilled players, Dream enlisted a favor from Technoblade to break him out of Pandora's box.
Narratively and philosophically, it makes sense that Technoblade and Philza are unafraid of Dream. He does not hold anything that they want, and neither can he threaten their lives, so he is not really anything significant to them. Technoblade is much more successful in achieving his goals, achieving his goals of liberation, anarchy and genuine friendship. Dream comparatively was unable to achieve his dreams (hehe) of full control and immortality.
Technoblade's beliefs, while radical and extremist, are reflective of the Dream SMP's message as a whole: that the people closest to us are the things that matter the most. He is ultimately proven right, and slowly but surely, everyone else grows into this same mindset, including our main protagonists Tommy and Tubbo. Regardless of the perspective, from one of skill and canon to narrative and philosophy, Technoblade should be equal or even superior to Dream. Philza hence scales.
Toriel:
General Monsters:
“Welcome to the Underground!”
The Underground has been the home to the monsters for thousands of years. Most of the monsters lack a physical form, and hence project themselves as beings of pure magic. From humanoid dogs, sentient tsundere planes, ghosts, skeletons and literal warrior fish, the Underground is a host to a wide variety of individuals.
Toriel is one of the three confirmed boss monsters in Undertale, alongside her husband Asgore and her son Asriel. Boss Monsters are powerful monsters with enough DETERMINATION to persevere temporarily after death, making them some of the most powerful in the entire series. It stands to reason that Toriel can reasonably scale above most, if not all, of the normal monsters.
Main Cast:
“ You'll have to try a little harder than that! ”
There are monsters that seem to dubiously fit the description of a “Boss Monster”. “Boss” Monsters such as Sans, Papyrus, and Undyne are more powerful than your standard monsters and can be preserved temporarily after death, though these are not the same as actual Boss Monsters.
(Souls for Boss Monsters crack.
Souls for Normal Monsters shatter.)
( That Asgore sprite after getting hit by the fireball is so hilarious. That man does NOT know what hit him. )
In the True Pacifist ending, Toriel stops the fight between Asgore and Frisk by effortlessly knocking Asgore away, which is something even Undyne struggled to accomplish. This makes sense, given Asgore and Toriel have the same stats: 80 ATK 80 DEF.
Toriel should be comparable to most of the other monsters in the underground, even some of the stronger ones.
Frisk:
“You are filled with DETERMINATION.”
Frisk is a tricky case to try to pinpoint. Their statistics are turbulent to say the least, being dependent on how determined they are at the specific moment. The Frisk at the beginning of the game is very different from the Frisk at the middle of a Genocide Run, who in turn is very different from Frisk in a True Pasifist Run. DETERMINATION is hard to measure, and in-game stats often do not account for that. It does not help that Frisk is basically the nexus of all of the meta events that occur in Undertale: being closely related to SAVE files, SAVING and LOADING, and 4th Wall Breaks.
Luckily, most of that is not within Toriel's range. Frisk’s ability to control the timeline is very clearly a thing that no one else, bar a few select individuals empowered to the point of practical godhood, can scale to. Toriel is not one of the few individuals. However, Toriel’s ability to one-shot Asgore puts her on a similar playing field to Frisk when it comes to physicality. Her relativity to the 2 strongest normal monsters in the Undertale Universe —Undyne and Asgore— who can both put up good fights against Frisk, suggests that she can perform similarly.
Power :
For being such a popular series, Undertale's raw power is pretty tame in comparison to the other series that I have covered.
Chara surviving the fall into the Underground yields about 43.1 Kilojoules of energy, which is relatively consistent with Sans thrashing you around and Sans stepping on a branch roughly getting several kilojoules of energy.
( 12.2 Kilojoules & 13.1 Kilojoules respectively )
Still, that pales in comparison to a single block of TNT in Minecraft is exploding with at least 0.05 Tons of TNT —over 5,000 times greater than Chara's fall.
Toriel certainly has arguments for higher levels of attack potency, but beat by beat, Philza just has greater values.
Frisk breaking down a wall in one hit is a big increase from that, yielding approximately 0.12 Tons of TNT. Mettaton breaking down a metal wall in 8 hits gets to a similar level.
Pyrope's bombs that he uses against Frisk are slightly higher at 0.21 Tons of TNT. Frisk and Undyne surviving the fiery explosion of Undyne’s house is an improvement on that, yielding 0.836 Tons of TNT.
The greatest non-kiloton actually comes from Knight Knight of all people. Knight Knight was able to create dozens of meteors, yielding over 60 Tons of TNT —enough to destroy a city block.
That being said, the 1st L’manberg Explosion caused by Wilbur Soot during Chaos War yields about 1.10 Kilotons of TNT, almost 20 times greater than Knight Knight's meteors.
The best scaling that Toriel has access to is likely from Flowey and…Tsunderplane of all characters. Yeah, the Tsundere Plane. Why does she always keep getting mentioned in my Undertale Blogs?
Both Tsunderplane and Frisk were able to move faster than lightning ( See Speed Section ). Given its size and speed, Tsunderplane's Kinetic Energy would yield about 10 Kilotons of TNT from ramming you (“not because it wants your attention or anything.”)
In the battle against Photoshop Flowey, Frisk is able to survive nuclear bombs from Photoshop Flowey. According to the Undertale Artbook, Toby Fox used the Little Boy and Fat Man as a template for Flowey's nukes, thus they should have comparable yields of destructive energy.
(While it is debatable whether Toriel scales to Frisk when they are fighting Photoshop Flowey, given that Tsunderplane's Kinetic Energy is relatively close to that range, it should be acceptable to use.)
That places Toriel maximum power output to about 15–21 Kilotons, which is about enough energy to destroy a town. However, the 2nd L’manburg Explosion from the Doomsday War reaches about 90 Kilotons of TNT, which is supported by the blast caused by a Wither at 105 Kilotons.
~5 times greater
The gap only widens exponentially from there, as Philza should be comparable to Technoblade, who managed to slice through a mountain —including the Bedrock layers underneath.
Accounting for the durability of Bedrock, this computes from 17.2 Exatons of TNT at lowest, which is enough energy to destroy multiple continents. At best, it gives out enough energy to destroy small planets.
Speed :
Both Undertale and Minecraft are everywhere in terms of speed, so I'll run through multiple levels of speed they can get to.
Frisk runs roughly about 7.51 meters per second, which is negligibly faster than Steve's running speed at 7.13 meters per second. That's roughly about the speed of your standard athlete, which is pretty good for a child that is shorter than Dora the Explorer.
Frisk can dodge Undyne’s spears and gunfire from a giant revolver, with bullets tending to fire at 120 meters per second. Meanwhile Steve can dodge arrows from skeletons. Minecraft arrows have a terminal velocity of 100 meters per second, which is subsonic.
Both Frisk and Steve can react to sound-based attacks, which —as implied by the name— travel at the speed of sound. Frisk reacts to Greater Dog's barks at Mach 0.565, while Steve can react to the Warden and its sound based screams.
Frisk can move faster than that based on being able to dodge meteor and missiles, which both reach roughly about 13 times the speed of sound.
Now, for their higher end stuff; both of them are able to react to lightning. Steve scales to the Minecraft Dungeons characters, who can react to the lightning rod. Meanwhile, Tsunderplane as per mentioned earlier can move faster than lightning at Mach 1056.
With leeway, both Philza and Toriel can reach faster than light speeds. In Minecraft Legends, Characters can react to beams fired by the Heart of Ender, reacting relativistic speeds (0.18c) to faster than light speeds (1.43c).
Toriel can upscale Napstablook, who closed his blinds faster than light could reach his house. This is potentially supported by Knight Knight, who can fire solar flares from a mini-sun —which Frisk can dodge.
Abilities & Counters :
Toriel does not have too many abilities nor gear, but what she does have is strong. First and foremost, her monster physiology.
Monsters are different from humans. Like humans, monsters have souls. However, they do not have a fully physical body. They are mostly made and fuelled by magic, in the same manner that humans are made of water. By harnessing this magic, they are able to form physical forms, as well as use them to fight.
The basic way is by manipulating one's soul. The soul is the essence of one's being, and where their magic stems from. It is their compassion, their will, the culmination of your deepest essence. Correspondingly, monster magic attacks the soul, either by damaging their soul or inflicting status effects.
Each monster has a unique way of conjuring their magic into attacks. Toriel forms it into fire, making fireballs to throw at her enemies. She has palms that trail fire, she can make a fire helix, make it rain fire, or form fireballs to throw.
We don't see the full extent of her abilities unfortunately, given that she is the tu-toriel after all and she does not have a full proper fight. However, we can likely base some of her powers off Asgore, who similarly uses fire magic to a much greater degree.
Additionally, she offers one of the strongest healing items in the game: the Butterscotch Pie. This instantly heals the user to full health.
(While we have never seen her use it, we can presume that given that she made it, she has them.)
Philza is one of the few members of the Dream SMP to have a unique physical trait of his own, that being his wings…or what’s left of them. Philza has wings that he used to —with the help of firework rockets— fly about at high speeds. When Wilbur activated the button that destroyed L’manberg during Chaos War, Philza shielded Wilbur from the explosion with his wings, burning most of his left wing off.
This results in him being canonically unable to fly anymore. However, his right wing can still be used in emergency cases as a shield, similarly to how his left wing was used. It also does great for dramatic poses. (See the image above.)
He has very high stamina, being able to grind out materials on days on end and fighting extremely long battles without breaking a sweat. In the Doomsday War, Philza along with practically everyone else fought for 3 straight days. He also has strong natural regeneration, with Minecraft characters being able to take arrows through their head and also heal from them without even being phased.
Philza is one of the richest players on the server. Both Philza and Technoblade are both contenders for the spending most time farming materials, only rivaled by equally dedicated players such as Foolish and Awesamdude, or characters with strong relations such as Quackity and Dream.
These players are responsible for erecting some of the grandest sculptures in the SMP, such as Pandora’s Vault, Las Nevadas, or Foolish’s “Summer house”. Philza, corresponding to his wealth, has some of the strongest armor in the game.
^ Foolish's definitely-not-overkill Summer House
^ Pandora's Vault from Awesamdude
^ Las Nevadas from Quackity
Philza's gearset fluctuates depending on what gear he has at the moment. In this fight, he will be given his equipment from the Doomsday War (see above), as it is the gearset he came up with when he was actually planning to fight.
* Netherite is one of the strongest materials in Minecraft, with its blast resistance being over 200 times greater than the third strongest ore Iron. It is the strongest material that one can use for their weapons and armor. Enchantments enhance the material beyond that, giving it greater power, durability, or even new properties depending on the enchantments placed on it. A combination of netherite and enchantments make for some of the best possible gear in the game.
His primary means of close-ranged offense is his sword, the “Hiasobi Benihime”. Its name references Bleach’s Urahara Kisuke, where Philza’s skin is based. It is able to repair itself with experience points and light enemies on fire upon hit. His axe “choppy boi” whilst not made for fighting can still disable shields, making them unusable for several seconds.
He has 2 enchanted tridents, which can be used for throwing or jabbing enemies. Both tridents can be used for melee purposes, but they differ with different enchantments:
“Forkza”: Traded to him from Dream and enchanted with “Riptide”, he is able to use it to travel quickly from locations. As long as he is in contact with a water body, he is able to propel himself great distances. In the event of rain, Philza soars through the high skies.
“Zapza”: His own trident, enchanted with “Channeling” and “Royalty”. Anywhere he throws the trident, Royalty will bring it back to his hand, making it a rather effective long-ranged weapon. In the event of a thunderstorm, Channeling would strike their opponent with lightning upon being hit by a thrown Trident.
For long-ranged, “Bowza” and “Bowza 2” are his 2 main bows. They are enchanted with Infinity, which supplies him an infinite amount of arrows as long as he has a single one remaining. The bows are enchanted with Power, which increases the damage dealt.
“Gunza” and “Crossbow” are crossbows (duh). They can store a shot until needing to be fired, making it a good weapon for extending combos, or look intimidating, Crossbow specifically has multi-shot, which allows it to shoot multiple arrows at once.
He is decked out in fully enchanted netherite Armour. This reduces how much knockback he takes from a hit, and gives him increased resistance to fire and even lava from the nether. His Armour is fully enchanted to increase its strength and durability, but it also has a few other enchantments:
Aqua Affinity: Allows him to mine faster underwater.
Depth Strider: Allows him to move faster underwater.
Respiration: Allows him to breathe longer underwater.
Feather Falling: Reduces his damage taken from falls.
“Shieldza” (I hope you see the pattern now) is a shield that is used to…shield himself from damage.
(Shieldza’s design is based on the Antarctic Empire's flag, which was his faction from SMP Earth)
Official description: “Hippity Hoppity get off my property”
TNT are explosives, which are detonated in game with fire or redstone. With a Flint & Steel, Philza can easily light up his TNT that he placed to cause massive damage, although it has a wind up animation.
Combining Wither Skeleton Skulls and Soul Sand in a certain formation gives rise to the Wither. It is one of the most dangerous mobs, rivaled only by the Ender Dragon and the Warden. A monstrous senseless creature that exists only to kill anything it sees, though that sometimes accidentally includes Philza himself.
Ender Pearls teleport the user to wherever the Pearl is thrown to. They permite quick and easy teleportation upon being thrown and are used to get the jump on other players, or escape from them.
Ender Chests function as a form of interdimensional storage which always contains the same materials that are stored in it and are personalized. Usually, these contain Philza’s most priced positions, ranging from his riches, to friendship Emeralds from Technoblade or Blue Wool from Ghostbur
Totems of Undying, when held, can save the holder from death, buying them a few seconds of time. Philza always holds a few on hand, due to only having one canonical life.
The Water Bucket is a bucket full of water, believe it or not. Placing a water bucket underneath oneself before they fall can nullify any damage from the fall. This is known as a “ MLG Water clutch”. Philza can also use it to create a water source for using his Trident Forkza to fly about.
(“MLG” stands for Major League Gamer)
Finally, Philza is skilled in some forms of magic. He can enchant objects, as well as brew potions that grant him specialized effects. Such include:
Strength: Significantly boosts the physical strength of the user, making them strike with a force several times more devastating than they would be normally.
Speed: Significantly boosts the speed of the user, making them move faster than they would be normally.
* By Minecraft Story Mode, Speed Potions also enhance one's perception and reaction speeds.
Regeneration: Increases the speed at which one heals, allowing them to heal quickly in the middle of combat.
Fire Resistance: Grants the user a resistance to fire, allowing them to walk through fire and even swim through lava without a flinch.
Invisibility: Grants the user invisibility, allowing them to sneak around sleathy. However, they have to be naked for them to be invisible, lest their armor be visible.
Harming: When thrown, damages the opponent upon hitting. Harming potions bypass durability, hitting opponents with raw damage.
Turtle Master: A unique potion, trading the user's speed for increased strength and durability, making them a tanky unit.
Golden Apples and Enchanted Golden Apples are the best food options in the game, granting special effects that allow the consumer to heal. It increases the rate of regeneration of the user and increases their maximum health. With the enchanted variant, it increases their defense and makes them immune to fire.
Philza, having more gear here, has the better counters. His fire resistance potions, as well as his netherite armor, makes him immune to Toriel's fire attacks. That is Toriel's main means of attacking. Toriel might be able to damage him via Soul Magic, but that is better gone into in the FAQs.
Tertiary factors :
Let's start with experience. It is no secret that Philza is an experienced and skilled fighter, having had a major role in multiple of the SMP's lore. He is uniquely one of the characters who may be immortal, or at least unable to die from old age.
Multiple times, Philza has discussed wanting to make his character immortal, and had even wanted to feature his main timeline character as a character in the Tales of the SMP.
“ At the very beginning, like before the stream started, Karl did tell us that we are not playing ourselves at all. So I was like…ah fuck, I could have gave some Dream SMP Philza crumbs.” — Philza
* The Pit occurs hundreds of years in the future.
While we do not have a clear indication of his exact age, he has suggested before that centuries are mere child's play to him —implying that he is likely multiple centuries old if his word is to be believed.
Whether Philza is joking about being centuries old doesn't really matter, as Toriel is far older. She has been alive for at least a millennia, as the monsters have been trapped in the Underground for over a millennia .
She is thousands of years old at worst, being as old as Asgore who has been alive and fighting from all the way back since the medieval era. There is even an implication that Asgore is older than written history, which is at least 5,000 years ago.
Toriel is skilled when she needs to be. She is very experienced as I had mentioned earlier, but she has also been able to accomplish feats such as knocking away Asgore and Flowey. Asgore is of one the most skilled fighters in Undertale, having led the underground on multiple occasions, and is only rivaled by his protege, Undyne, and his judge, Sans.
However, while she has shown skill, she isn't one of the top dogs. There are very clearly people that are greatly above her when it comes to fighting prowess. For instance, in a neutral ending where Frisk kills Papyrus and at least ten other monsters, Asgore is killed. When Toriel tries to establish a non-hostile policy, Undyne leads a rebellion and exiles Toriel back to the ruins.
Toriel, with all her centuries of experience, knows how to fight when she needs to. However, she isn't on the level of the Top Tiers like Undyne, Asgore or even Sans. Fighting goes against her nature, so that aligns pretty well.
Philza is a seasoned fighter through and through. While he isn't as renowned for his skill as other Minecraft Top Tiers, he is still highly proficient in numerous forms of melee and ranged combat. He has participated in various Minecraft skilled-based events, such as Minecraft Mondays and Minecraft Championships, where he has consistently done well. He has fought in multiple wars in the SMP, and consistently trains with the best.
(How the fu–?)
She does not have many opportunities to show it off, but Toriel is very intelligent. She is one of the most experienced monsters in the Underground, has read every book in her house multiple times, and prepared an entire school curriculum in the time it takes Frisk to have a short nap.
Philza is one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent people on the Dream SMP, no doubt due to his vast history of experiences. He is an expert in potion making, crafting and building. He is capable of constructing complex redstone mechanisms, including the one that destroyed L’manberg. He is knowledgeable about the Minecraft world and its mechanics —such as how Ender Pearl Stasis Chambers operate and zero-tick farms . He, together with Technoblade, has orchestrated multiple complicated plans which range from destroying a country to penetrating an inescapable prison.
While preparing a school curriculum and having so much experience does Toriel good, it doesn't compare to the detailed grandiose plans that Philza routinely comes up with.
Weaknesses:
Toriel:
Toriel is a strong believer in pacifism (ignore the image above). She is hesitant to engage in combat, and only does so when it is necessary to protect others…mainly Frisk. She is not completely abstaining from violence, and will gladly throw a fireball if need be, but it reduces her number of win conditions by a decent amount.
A monster's body will have weaker defenses if they refuse to fight against the opponent, and will get even more vulnerable if said opponent has an extreme desire to kill. This is likely the reason for why, despite being one of the most powerful monsters in the Underground, she is defeated in a single hit from Genocide Frisk.
She can also get a bit obsessed in her beliefs, which leads to her disdain for Asgore and temporary confrontation with Frisk where she can come off as overly obsessed.
Philza:
Philza, despite his reputation as a protective father figure, can be rather apathetic when he has his mind set on something he believes in. He, similar to Technoblade, can hyperfocus on pursuing what they perceive to be due-justice and ignore those around them. His interactions with Ghostbur, particularly following Doomsday War, is a prime example of such. He is apathetic towards Ghostbur's despair, too blinded by the mission to rid the government to listen, despite having valued Ghostbur as someone important to him.
His hyperfocus in canon likely stems from his hyperfocus as a person. Philza has a tendency to zone-in on his objective and lose sight of independent danger, which on occasion can turn out costly. An infamous example of this would be MCC15 Survival Games Event, where he ignored Tommy's advice and, after seeing his team getting slaughtered, proceeded to attempt to 1v8 a team when only wearing Iron Armour. He can quickly lose situational awareness if he is not careful.
Philza operates best in a supporting role. He can perform well as an individual fighter, but he truly excels when synergised with another top tier player. He is not as well rounded as the top tier players and much prefers backing up stronger players rather than taking a leadership position.
That is what makes the Technoblade and Philza such a dangerous duo. Their synergy is strong enough to make them both S Tier Players, but while Technoblade is an S Tier Player by himself, Philza is an A Tier Player by himself. Without a strong ally, Philza’s weaknesses are easier to exploit.
Evidently, in the Dream SMP, in spite of his hand-to-hand skill, he has had very little demonstrations of actual solo fighting skill. The closest thing to a true battle that Philza has partaken in is in Doomsday War, where he served as (again) a support for Technoblade.
He is also old. Very old. He is so old that he misread 3 days as 3 months. Old man.
Oh and one more thing.
FAQs:
Canon Clarification:
Canonical Tiers:
Primary Canon: Refers to the main continuity source material, in which all events which happen within the main story are considered as within truth and reason.
Secondary Canon: Refers to other works that are of lower credibility in canon, such as spin-offs. These can be used, however will take lower priority when compared to the Primary Canon.
Tertiary Canon: Official Adaptations that are not overseen by the author, which do not contradict the source material. The most common example are Anime Adaptations, where Authors are often consulted, but not writing the show. Tertiary Canon nevers takes priority over Secondary or Primary Canon.
Alternate Canon: Refers to material that stem from alternate universes from than the main series. The canonicity of each of them is largely situational, depending on the connection between the universes.
* Note that it is largely a case-by-case situation. Material that appears to be tertiary canon may be secondary or even primary canon, depending on the world that the author has established, their intentions, and how vocal they are on it.
Dream SMP:
The Dream SMP's canon lore is messy due to the improvisational nature of the series. It does not help that The Dream SMP has multiple writers, with many-a-time the people who are playing the character are writing for their own character. This is very evident in the multiple character finales, where Tommy, Tubbo & Dream, Wilbur, the Syndicate, Las Nevadas, Karl Jacobs, and many more had their own personalized finales to wrap up their characters.
Dream SMP Streams:
The events that are critical to lore and character are taken as primary canon. Someone losing a canon life, having big significance in the plot, or in someone's character journey, typically denotes a big event. Big Events such as the Manberg Festival, Doomsday War, and Pandora's Vault Prison Break, are canon. The whole drug war with the drug van is canon as it plays an important part to Tommy's and Tubbo's history. Fundy losing a canon life by taking his life in front of Wilbur is canon.
Later streams become almost entirely canon, with it being fully planned out. The finale to the Dream SMP is entirely planned out, and hence is canon. Special streams such as Quackity's streams, where it consists of pre-recorded footage similar to a film, are also entirely canon.
Additional material that is not clearly canon is taken as roughly canon unless it contradicts established lore. For instance, 4th Wall Breaks from streamers are non-canon, as Technoblade is the only one that is able to hear them in canon. Comparatively, Technoblade's birthday stream is canon, as it is largely canon compliant.
It is taken as a case-to-case basis. Some streams, like the stream with Tommy and Dream create a new religion by erecting Church Prime, is very clearly non-canon.
Tales from The SMP:
Tales from the SMP is a side anthology series starring Karl Jacobs as he is sent through the past, present and future as a Time Traveller. Events that happen here are all scripted, and outside of the banter between the characters, all events are canon, having occurred or will be occurring somewhere in the timeline.
Sad-ist Animations:
Sad-ist is an animator who has made animations of the Dream SMP. These animations are extremely well done, and have garnered the attention of most, if not all, of the members of the SMP. Whilst technically fan-made content, most of the Dream SMP content creators really like Sad-ist and their work, most just include it in their canon anyways.
Philza did also outright say that Sad-ist is canon, so it earns about Secondary Canon status.
“ I used to have wings, but then someone decided to blow up something, and I used them to shield my son! Shoutout to Sad-ist. ” –Philza
Sad-ist Animations are mostly canon compliant and faithful, and have made a huge impact on the Minecraft Community. Philza's destroyed wings, Tubbo’s scars, Dream’s design, have all resulted from Sad-ist’s art and animatics.
Minecraft Monday & MCC:
Minecraft Characters are controlled by the player. The player, in this case Philza, retains their skill irregardless of their continuity. It is the same person playing the game after all.
Dream SMP is compliant with the rough skill rankings of the characters. Dream, Technoblade, and Sapnap are all still top tier. Tommy and Tubbo are all still great players. So on.
Minecraft Monday and later Minecraft Championships are huge competitions where multiple players in teams compete in multiple challenges of skills to see who emerges victorious.
Whilst non-applicable for anything else, Minecraft Monday and Minecraft Championships should be applicable to analyze Phil’s skill level.
Minecraft & Corresponding Tie-ins
Philza and the other Dream SMP members obviously use Minecraft as a template to create their world. They hence should scale to, and above, Steve and the other Minecraft Game Mechanics.
Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends are connected to the main Minecraft game. The same is true for Minecraft Story Mode. The Minecraft Books and Novels are generally non-canon.
“ The book follows the adventures of two endermen living in (you guessed it!) 19th century Birmingham. I mean, the End. It’s a non-canon adventure set in Minecraft’s most mysterious biome. “
Undertale:
Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, loves keeping everything vague. It's good for making a series —and is one of the things that makes Undertale so great— but it is a pain when trying to find out what is usable and what is not.
Undertale:
The game is canon to the game, believe it or not.
Undertale Artbook:
The Undertale Artbook is Toby Fox's book detailing the process of creating Undertale. Anything that is contradictory is usually classified as so in the book, so the artbook should be canon as a guidebook.
Deltarune:
Deltarune is another indie game that is made by Toby Fox, starring Kris. They contain some of the same characters from Undertale, yet in vastly different situations with a completely different timeline.
From Toby Fox’s Frequently–Asked–Questions, he commented on the release of Deltarune and its relationship to Undertale. He had this to say:
Q: How does this game relate to UNDERTALE? Is it a sequel?
A: Please don't worry too much about that. Essentially, this is not the world of UNDERTALE.
If you completed UNDERTALE, the ending and world are as you left it. If everyone was happy there, the people in the UNDERTALE world would still be happy. So, please don't worry about those characters, and that world. It will remain untouched.
To rephrase that, DELTARUNE's world is a different one. With different characters that have lived different lives. A whole new story will happen...
I don't know what you call this kind of game.
It's just a game you can play after you complete UNDERTALE, if you want to.
That's all.
Q: So there's no connections between the two games?
A: It's a different world that might even have different rules. That doesn't mean there will be no connections at all though.
From the above interview, I elected to treat it as a Secondary Canon. Deltarune's universe is shown to be akin to an alternative universe of the main Undertale, one where the monsters and the humans never had a war.
Undertale operates under the Many-Worlds Interpretation, and between timelines —while events may vary— characters and game rules apply roughly the same. This is reflected in Deltarune as well, with the menu screens between the two being very similar and dialogue boxes being similar.
Characters are in different positions and statuses, but they all keep their core character traits.
Mr. Burgerpants remains a fast-food worker who longs to be an inspiring actor on the surface. Toriel still loves children (not in that way), Asgore still loves flowers, they still get married and adopt a human child because they are both loving parents —and they both get divorced because they are simply romantically incompatible, regardless of war or no war.
Undyne is a strong willed individual who, while brash, genuinely gives it her all to give to her people. It makes sense why she becomes a soldier in Undertale, and why she becomes a policewoman in Deltarune. She is a natural fit for an authority position, and a job as such is destined for her, regardless of war or no war.
Toby Fox did say that the rules of the world may differ between Deltarune and Undertale. Hence, Deltrarune will only be used as supporting information for Undertale's world.
I elected to not cross-scale physical stats, since no monsters from Undertale battles with anyone from Deltarune Darkners (if they are even real, the game implies that it may just be imaginary). Deltarune's statistics would not impact the final verdict regardless. To keep the blog easy to understand, I choose not to include them.
Undertale Yellow:
Undertale Yellow is a fan-made game, given permission by Toby Fox, starring Clover; the seventh human that fell into the underground before Frisk.
Unfortunately, there is no substantial evidence that Undertale Yellow is canon to Undertale. It is made by a group of fans who were inspired by Undertale, and wanted to make a spin off.
The best argument going for its canonicity is Toby Fox enabling them to make the game, and claiming that Undertale Yellow was canon… on April Fools.
Toby Fox responded UTY, and then dipped. He left it up to fans to determine whether they believe it to be canon, and despite it being a very faithful expansion, there are some timeline issues with Flowey. Given the already Tertiary Canon Status of Undertale Yellow— I would consider it non-canon. At least until further statements are made.
It is a great game though. Go support it.
Undertale's Magic System?
Undertale's fighting system is pretty funky, so it's best to describe it a little further. As per explained earlier, Monsters get magic from their Souls, in which they use to conjure attacks. Battles seem to occur entirely between souls, so there is an argument to be had that Undertale characters have durability negation via Soul attacks.
* Durability Negation is the ability to damage an opponent by bypassing their physical durability.
Undertale characters are able to attack souls. When it comes to another character that has never encountered Soul-based attacks before, they have little defenses against such attacks. In theory, this will enable Toriel to bypass Philza's physical stats and directly damage his soul, something which Phil has shown very limited resistance to. In layman's terms, Philza cannot defend Toriel because Toriel attacks his soul, and Philza cannot defend against soul attacks.
That is in theory, but in practice it doesn't hold up as well. Attacks are soul-based in nature, that aspect holds up as true, but soul-based stats seem to hold a strong correlation with physical stats.
For instance, increasing physical attack and defense will increase one’s soul attack and defense. Frisk is able to gain soul defenses by equipping physical armor like Aprons (don't question fashion) , and increase their damage by using physical weapons like Knives.
Soul-based battles also involve a large amount of physical involvement. For instance, Undyne has to physically chase down Frisk in order to fight them, or Papyrus is unable to use his special attack as he left it at home, or Tsunderplane ramming you with their entire body. Even in Deltarune, Kris and the gang dodge attacks to the soul by physically moving their body.
It is likely that physical stats and soul stats are related in some capacity. Being strong is likely an indication of a strong soul, which makes sense, given that Monster's bodies are made of the magic from their soul.
Philza Counters:
Even giving the benefit of the doubt, Philza still should have sufficient counters to address Toriel’s hypothetical durability negation if it be valid.
* In Minecraft Dungeons, soul magic is already a thing and there exists defenses against such.
In Minecraft, while it is not explicitly stated, it is implied that magic status effects have some origins in soul manipulation. Water bottles need Nether warts to be converted into Awkward Potions, which would serve as the basis for every consequent potion type. Nether Warts come from Soul Sand, which while isn't directly stated, is implied to contain souls.
(The design has 3 soul heads on it, and it slows down the player when they walk over it, almost as if dragging them down. They also kill endermites and silverfish when they move over it.)
Players are also able to damage and take hits from the Vexes, which are souls summoned by the evoker. They make ghostly sounds and can phase through walls.
There is a high likelihood that Philza has some sort of defense against Toriel's “durability negation”. Funnily enough, Philza has his own form of true durability negation with his splash potions of harming, that deal the same amount of damage regardless of any gear.
Faster than Light?
The speed feats used for both Toriel and Philza here are pretty contentious. Both of them are quite over the place, having anywhere from athlete speeds to faster than light speeds. While the lightning reaction feats are pretty clear-cut, the light reaction speeds are contentious.
Let's look over them.
Orb of Dominance:
In Minecraft Dungeons, we are introduced to the Orb of Dominance, a sentient object —which is the disguised form of the Heart of Ender— which is manipulated by the Arch-Illager into reshaping the world into one that would be accepting of him.
Conveniently ignore how the “orb” is a literal perfect cube.
In Minecraft Dungeons, the player defeats not only the Arch-Illager when he was channeling the full might of Orb of Dominance, but the Heart of Ender as well. The player can react to blasts from the Orb of Dominance, and survive blasts as well, thus should compare accordingly.
The Orb of Dominance can empower a beacon. Beacons fire a beam straight into the sky (or in the case of a corrupted beacon, damages enemies). Not only does it act like light, it gives off a light level of 15 (which is the highest possible), and is called a beam.
The Orb of Dominance is even shown firing a beam of light from a beacon that reaches the sun and turns it into the moon within a few seconds.
Even assuming the Minecraft Sun is comparable to our own, that is several hundreds of times the speed of light, with it potentially being higher given the possibility of infinite distance between the sun and the overworld. That may be a bit too generous and outside Philza's realistic range.
Minecraft physics are overall pretty wacky, and vary quite drastically between games. While Minecraft characters can react to light in Minecraft Dungeons, they can also get hit by subsonic arrows. Taking it as relativistic to faster than light seems like the fairest interpretation.
Hyper Goner:
The Hyper Goner is Asriel Dreemurr’s—the God of Hyperdeath— strongest and final attack, whereby he wipes the entire timeline in one massive blast. Up to this point, he had captured all of the souls in the Underground, save for one.
Napstablook, a melancholic ghost musician DJ who lives in Waterfall, does not have a soul. Hence, he was left inside his house. Meanwhile, during the Hyper Goner attack, he managed to react to the flash of light by “hearing a knock at the door” from the flash of light “wanting to come in” and closing the blinds.
This is contentious as light…doesn't knock on doors, obviously. In fact, light has no force. The closest thing to force that light can produce is the difference in heat causing movement in air. This is also contentious given that it is a joke scene, meant to be taken as humorous rather than an actual feat.
The blast of light also is not actually light speed. It is much faster. The Hyper Goner fired by Asriel covered the entire timeline in about 10 seconds, making it quadrillions of times the speed of light. Similarly to the night beacon from Minecraft Dungeons, that may be a bit too generous and outside of Toriel's reasonable range.
The Mini-Sun's Solar Flares from Knight Knight is also odd. It's beams doesn't act like actual light, with them curving around in a spiral pattern instead of moving in a straight line like how light should behave.
Overall, I elected to grant Toriel access to her relativistic to faster-than-light speed scaling, since it does not affect the outcome of the fight. Nonetheless, I would still wager that the Hyper Goner feat is less reliable compared to the Orb of Dominance feat, at least when it comes to scaling the rest of the verse’s characters to light speed.

In terms of stats, the closest aspect is speed. On the average, Philza and Toriel have reacted at Mach Speed and even Lightning speed, putting them on similar tiers of speed. From Minecraft Dungeons, Philza can potentially reach faster-than-light speeds. From Napstablook, Toriel can get up to about the same level.
However, beat for beat, Philza is stronger. A single block of TNT is at least 5,000 times stronger than all of the feats Toriel scales to, barring a small handful of them. The greatest non-Kiloton level— 62.6 Tons of TNT from Knight Knight’s meteors—is almost 20 times weaker than the 1st L’manburg explosion; and the 2nd L’manburg Explosion, as well as the blast caused by a wither spawning, is 5 times greater than the best physical feat that Undertale has to offer. By downscaling Technoblade cutting through a mountain, the gap in power would expand from between 857 Trillion times and a staggering 1.15 Quintillion times.
To paint a picture on how great a difference 1.15 Quintillion times is: Say Toriel’s power output was represented by a stick of dynamite. Compare that to the Chicxulub Impact Event, otherwise known as the meteor that killed all of the dinosaurs. Philza’s power output would then be about 5 times that of the meteor.
From there, Philza has so many more win conditions. Use harming potions to injure her, use TNT to carpet bomb her, or just punch her. With that power difference, Philza does not need a good hit to take Toriel down, any hit he lands is most likely going to knock her out.
Toriel’s pacifism is her greatest character strength, but in this battle it is her Achilles heel. All of her win conditions are nullified by the fact that she wouldn't reasonably do them in character. Even if she has strong enough magic to defeat Philza quickly, she just would not do it, which leaves Phil with plenty of opportunity to flee, heal and adapt.
That's disregarding all the defenses Philza has against magic. Besides, the Totem of Undying ensures that Philza can at least survive one attack, so that it is unlikely to work.
Toriel also needs to get decently close to attack, for which Philza has plenty of long-ranged options to ensure that does not happen. His Bow & Arrow and Trident are solid for offense, and his Ender Pearls and Blocks can help him maintain distance.
He can also just overwhelm her with an army of Withers. It is something he has done before in the Doomsday War, and there isn't much of a reason for Philza not to do it again if he deems it fit.
Philza has everything he needs to win here, and more. While Toriel may be a fierce adversary, she does not stack up to the Angel of Death’s wider range of weapons, better win conditions, and frankly ludicrous strength.
