Harry Potter VS Percy Jackson ( The Wizarding World VS Riordanverse )
"When the will defies fear, when duty throws the gauntlet down to fate,
when honor scorns to compromise with death — that is heroism."
— Robert Green Ingersoll
Harry James Potter, the Boy Who Lived.
Perseus "Percy" Jackson, the Hero of Olympus.
Most of us live a normal life, in human circumstances with human problems. These two however are anything but normal. Thrusted as children into a journey through the unknown that nothing could prepare them for, if they manage to persevere, they can become the hero they were truly meant to be.
My friends have been looking forward to this blog for a while, and I promised to do it like a year ago. I haven't covered a primarily book series before (other than Greek Mythology, but that wasn't my finest piece of work) so I'm pretty excited to see how this turns out. I hope you all enjoy it! Without further ado…
Fanart:
Harry Potter:
“ Working hard is important, but there's
something that matters even more;
believe in yourself. ”
Harry’s early life was tough. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, but they weren't Aunt May or Uncle Ben. They resented his mother, and he grew up neglected, forced to sleep in a closet under the stairs. The future didn't look bright for Harry. Luckily for him, his parents were wizards.
The son of James and Lily Potter, Harry was born with a prophecy. He was destined to be the one with the power to vanquish Lord Voldemort, the most powerful Dark wizard in the world. Consequently, the Potter's went into hiding. However, that didn’t stop Voldemort. Paranoid and enraged. Voldemort attempts to slay baby Harry with the Killing Curse, only for his mother's love for him to protect him, making him the only known survivor of the Killing Curse. He was now the Boy who Lived.
On his eleventh birthday, Harry learns from Rubeus of his wizard origins. Gathering school supplies and doning new robes, Harry sets off for Hogwarts, the legendary School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is sorted into the Gryffindor House, and becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. He starts gaining a reputation for protecting the Philosopher's Stone from Voldemort, solving the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets, and slaying Salazar Slytherin's basilisk.
Eventually, Harry, alongside his friends, hunted down and destroyed Voldemort's Horcruxes. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry personally saw the deaths of Severus Snape and Fred Weasley while learning that Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Colin Creevey, and many others had fallen in the battle as well. He encountered Voldemort and nearly sacrificed himself, knowing that his doing so was the only way to destroy the fragment of Voldemort's soul inside of him. While in limbo, after Voldemort cursed him in the forest clearing, Dumbledore gave Harry advice and background information on the Dark Lord. When told that he could choose to live or to "move on", Harry ultimately chose to live. After he awoke, Harry confronted Voldemort and defeated him once and for all.
Percy Jackson:
" If my life is going to mean anything,
I have to live it myself. "
Is Perseus Jackson a troubled kid?
The son of Sally Jackson and an absent father, Percy grew up with his mother and his abusive stepfather Gabe Ugliano. He struggled in school, being labelled a troublemaker. He got bullied frequently for standing out and had to cope with neurodivergence with his ADHD and Dyslexia. Percy was also terribly unlucky, for strange occurrences happened around him daily. School buses exploded around him and aquariums flooded, which led to Percy getting kicked out of more than 6 schools within 6 years. Life, quite frankly, sucked.
Unbeknownst to Percy, there was more to the story. Percy Jackson was born a Demigod, with a human parent and a godly one. That God was Poseidon, the God of the Sea, one of the most legendary gods! The Greek God of the Oceans had fallen in love with a woman, a mere mortal who could see through the Mist. When Percy was still an infant, Poseidon had left him with Sally to protect him from Zeus, who would have been enraged that one of the Big Three Gods —Hades, Poseidon and himself —were still having demigod children. The big three are the most powerful Gods in all of Olympus, and are seen as too dangerous to be brought into existence due to such.
Percy’s life changes dramatically during a trip to the beach with his mother, where he discovers his godly status after being attacked by and slaying a monster called the Minotaur. He is taken to Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven and training grounds for Demigod children such as himself. He befriends Annabeth Chase, the daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood, a satyr, and uncovers his lineage from his father Poseidon.
He's in for something big. The “Great Prophecy,” which foretold that one of the children of the Big Three Gods would either save or destroy the world. Definitely very ominous...and very vague. Percy would ve sent on multiple quests, including recovering Zeus's Master Bolt, retrieving a Golden Fleece, and battling against the Titan Atlas —who was cursed to hold up the sky.
Eventually, Percy faces his destiny in the final battle of the Titan War. He, along with his friends and allies from Camp Half-Blood, must stop Kronos and his army from overthrowing the gods. Turns out, the prophecy is about him, and he defeats Kronos alongside the other demigods. Percy is offered the gift of becoming a god, but…is that what he truly wants?
Percy Jackson is a troubled kid. There's no doubt about that. However, through his journey, he was finally able to find friends and family —people he would do anything for. He finally didn't feel alone. And truth be told? He is a troubled kid, and he would not want it any other way.
Ground Rules:
No outside help will be given.
No outside non-standard gear.
They will be in character.

Abilities & Equipment:
Harry Potter:
Equipment:
Harry's Wand:
Carved from Holly Wood with a core made from the feather of the Phoenix Fawkes, Harry's wand is his main weapon which gives him access to a good majority of his spells. The Holly Wood it is made from helps repel evil.
Elder Wand:
A 15 inch wand made from Elder wood and contains a Thestral tail hair core. It has gained the nicknames of the “Wand of Destiny” and even “Deathwand”, and it’s hard not to see why. Elder Wood is one of the rarest of all wand woods, it contains untold magical power and is difficult to master. Its core was described as "a tricky substance that only wizards that mastered death can control".
Most wands hold a sort of semi-sentience, and most are loyal to their master. The Elder Wand however is loyal to the wielder of the greatest power. It is also considered the most powerful wand shown in the Harry Potter franchise.
Sword of Gryffindor:
Forged thousands of years by goblins —the most skilled metalworkers in the lands— the Sword of Gryffindor is an enchanted sword. Harry would use this sword as his primary weapon to destroy Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes.
Firebolt:
The iconic broomstick that allows its user to fly through the skies. In 1993, it was the fastest broomstick in the world and was even used in the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. Similar to the Sword of Gryffindor, it was made from Goblin workers and Harry was lucky enough to be one of the first to own a Firebolt.
Invisibility Cloak:
A rare and valuable magical garment which rendered anything it. covered invisible. It is either woven from the hairs of a Demiguise or produced by enchanting an travelling cloak with an exceptionally strong Disillusionment Charm or Bedazzling Hex.
Resurrection Stone:
A stone that temporarily allows its user to semi-return back from the dead. It is one of the 3 Hallows, alongside the Cloak of Invisibility and the Elder Wand. Anyone who wielded all three would become the “Master of Death”.
Sidenote: The difference in power between the three hallows is so funny to me. We have the most powerful wand to have ever been introduced alongside a cloak you hide under and a stone that temporarily brings you back as a ghost. The Elder Wand is just built different.
Basilisk Fang:
The Basilisk, otherwise known as the king of Serpents, is a giant magical (it's Harry Potter they're always magical) serpent bred from Dark Wizards. They hatched a chicken egg under a toad and a snake popped out. Magic!
Its fangs contain a potent venom, powerful enough to be lethal over time. This venom is so strong that it is onthef the few substances capable of destroying a horcrux. The venom is also long-lasting. Hermione Granger was able to use the venom from the fang of a Basilisk that was dead for nearly five years.
Potions:
Before we get into the bread and butter, the spells, we should go over the wide variety of potions in the Wizarding World. Harry with all the knowledge he has accumulated should be able to make most of the potions seen in the franchise. However, not all potions are useful in a battle. For instance: Cheese-Based Potions. The main ingredient? Cheese. What does it do? It tastes good I guess.
Potions are also limited in only giving effects only to the Drinker. Other magical potions such as Amortentia —a love potion that causes a powerful infatuation or obsession in the drinker— while interesting, are limited in combat. Hence for the sake of the viewing experience and also my sanity, I'll be listing only the important ones.
Antidotes:
There have been a few potions that can defend against poisons. The very creatively named Antidote to Common Poisons reverses the effects of common poisons while the equally creative Antidote to Uncommon Poisons reverse the effects of uncommon poisons. The Anti-paralysis Potion can heal against the effects of Paralysis.
Fire & Fire Protection:
There have been two fire-breathing potions: the Fire-breathing Potion and the Dog-breath Potion. They are described as having an unpleasant fiery breath, which honestly you could have inferred yourself. Look at that man above. The Fire Protection Potion, otherwise known as the Ice Potion, allows the drinker to move through flames unscathed. It protects from most fires, even magical ones.
Healing:
There are plenty of Healing Potions in Harry’s arsenal. The Healing Potion and Star Grass Salve help to soothe and heal injuries while the Wound-Cleaning Potion acts as glorified Antiseptic. The Girding Potion and Stamina Potion offers increases to one’s stamina and endurance, and the Invigoration Draught presumably gives the taker an energy boost. In the event where a huge volume of blood is lost, the Blood-Replenishing Potion can replenish the blood of the taker.
Strength and Power buffs:
The Strength Potion, the Strengthening Potion, and the Strong Exstimulo Potion all increase one’s physical strength. The Edurus Potion increases durability by forming a rocky firm on the drinker’s skin. The Maxima Potion and Focus Potion increases spell power and decreases cooldown time between spells respectively.
Mental buffs:
A surprisingly large amount of these spells are directed towards the mind to make oneself more confident or less anxious. In a battle, the Baruffio's Brain Elixir and Wit-Sharpening Potion increases brain power and clarity of thought. A Calming Draught calms the user from shock, trauma and fear while a Memory Potion enhances memory.
Others:
There are a few other miscellaneous potions that I thought would be worth mentioning. Felix Felicis, otherwise known as Liquid Luck, by its name makes you more lucky. A Mopsus Potion gives limited telekinesis while Thunderbrew surrounds the drinker's body with a miniature thunderstorm that zaps enemies. Gillyweed is a magical plant that resembles rat tails that when consumed allows a human to breathe underwater.
I would also like to point out that there have been two invisibility potions: the Invisibility Potion and the Potion of Invisibility. Really have to knock it in the Invisibility Cloak’s face about how un-special it is.
Elixir 7 & Pepperup Elixir:
I would be pressed to not mention Elixir 7. It has 2 known properties: You cannot use more than 5 drops at once (for reasons ungiven) and…it contains 25% alcohol. The Pepperup Elixir is even worse, with a 7 drop limit and a 46% alcohol concentration.
Maximum Turbo Farts Potion:
Take your best guess at what this potion does.
Abilities:
Magic:
Magic is a supernatural force that changes the reality of the world at a fundamental level. The ability to use magic is often inherited. Harry is the son of Lily Potter and James Potter, two very skilled magic users. This puts him favourably to use a good majority of the spells used throughout the series.
Spells:
Of course, not all spells are useful in a combat setting. For example, the tail-growing spell makes the victim grow a tail. Whilst it is very cool, it isn't really applicable in a fight. Hence, I'll focus on the more combat applicable spells.
Expelliarmus:
The Disarming Charm is Harry Potter's signature spell. It forces any object an opponent is holding to fly out of their hand. It is Harry's most preferred spell for being defensive, rather than a more offensive spell. This spell can also deflect other spells given enough power, as it was shown deflecting Avada Kedavra back at Voldemort.
Stupefy:
The Stunning Spell stuns the opponent to render them unconscious. This is one of Harry's most used spells, as it is known for its efficiency in a battle without causing the target any lasting damage. The spell also has the ability to stop moving objects.
Sparks:
Harry can shoot out sparks from his wand to cause damage to targets, or to reveal things in the dark. The Basic Cast is the default variant, shooting out red sparks. Blue Sparks fire blue sparks (shocker) whilst Verdimillious produces a jet of green sparks. With enough of these sparks, they can impair vision and breathing, as seen in the American National Quidditch team's win at the semi-finals of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup against Liechtenstein. Red, white and blue sparks filled the air so thickly that seeing and even breathing became an issue.
Fire:
The most basic fire producing spell is Incendio, otherwise known as the Fire-making spell for its ability to make fire. Firestorm and Protego Diabolica are similar in that both form a protective ring of fire around themselves to ward off opponents (the only difference is that the latter produces blue flames). Confringo, the Blasting Curse, produces a fiery explosion that blasts opponents. Fiendfyre is the most unique one, unleashing cursed fire that takes up the physical appearance of an animal that seeks to burn anything in its path.
Water & Ice:
Aguamenti produces a jet of water from the tip of the wand, while Aqua Eructo does… fundamentally the exact same thing. Glacius freezes targets with freezing cold air and can freeze water. Impervius is a charm that makes an object repel water and mist.
General Attacks:
There are a few general attacking spells that Harry has used or should be to use. Bombarda produces a small explosion and Expulso also creates an explosion (caused by a change in pressure rather than heat) The Homing spell follows the target and causes damage when it connects and Everte Statum knocks an opponent back.
Defodio, a.k.a. Gouging Spell, and Deprimo blasts beams that are mainly used for digging through the ground. Reducto breaks objects, and with stronger usages, can even disintegrate them. Diffindo, a.k.a. Severing Charm, and Sectumsempra are both cutting spells, used to cut through objects and even other people. It is a dangerous spell, potent enough to make people easily bleed to death. Stinging Hex produces a stinging sensation in the victim, resulting in angry red welts and occasionally severe inflammation of the affected area.
The Disintegration spell kills the victim by distingrating its target. Straight up disintegrates them. That's harsh…
Other attacks:
Other general attacking spells include the Shield Penetration Spell, which Annihilates magical enchantments and shields. Arrow Shooting Spell, a transfiguration spell which conjures shooting arrows from the caster's wand. Ventus, a.k.a. the Windy Spell, and Gusts shoot rushes of wind from the tip of the wand. The Gytrash-Conjuring Spell summons a green luminous construct of a Gytrash —large, dog-like spirits with a forked tail— which can be commanded by the caster to attack an opponent. Piertotum Locomotor, or the Animation Charm, brings inanimate targets such as suits of armor to come to life.
Annoying spells:
Magic involves a lot of dueling, and dueling is often unlethal. Hence, there are a lot of spells that exist to be annoying, to mess up the opponent, or to incapacitate them through alternative means.
For the spells that affect the target mentally:
Confundo makes foes confused whilst a Confusion Hex impairs their mental awareness.
Muffliato overwhelms a victim's ear with unidentifiable buzzing, and the Deterioration Hex reduces one's stamina, making them tire more easily.
For spells that affect the target's body:
The Cheering Charm Makes the target happy, with overuse causing the target to break out into an uncontrollable laughing fit. The Babbling Curse causes uncontrollable babbling and yapping from the opponent and the Conjunctivitis Curse causes irritation in the eyes, forcing them to swell shut. Densaugeo is a hex that causes the victim's teeth to grow rapidly. The Ear-Shrivelling Curse causes the target's ears to shrivel up and Leek Jinx makes leeks sprout out of the target's ears. Engorgio, also known as the Engorgement Charm or the Growing Charm, causes the target to swell immensely. Engorgio Skullus is similar, causing specifically the victim's skull to swell disproportionately. Locomotor Wibbly causes the victim's legs to collapse as if they were turned to jelly and the Knee-Reversal Hex puts knees on backwards.
Mucus ad Nauseam, or the Curse of the Bogies (what a great name lmao that's what I'm talking about) gives the victim a runny nose, accompanied by constant sneezing. Sternius causes the victim to sneeze for a short period of time. Pepper Breath gives the victim a fiery hot breath.
Special mention to Furnunculus, or the Pimple Jinx. It covers the body in pimples, and if you want an indication of what that looks like, just refer to the above. The worst part is that Harry has actually used this spell not just once, but twice. This should be unforgivable, look at it?!
For spells that affect external surroundings:
Colloshoo, the Stickfast Hex, sticks the target's shoes to the ground. Ebublio Jinx traps the victim in a bubble. Epoximise adheres objects to one another, akin to glue. Obscuro blindfolds the target and Orbis sucks them into the ground.
My favourite is Melofors, which encases the victim's head in a pumpkin.
Incarcerous ties up the target with ropes conjured from thin air, whilst Locomotor Mortis locks the legs together. Mobilicorpus is used to suspend bodies a few inches above the air while Levicorpus dangles a victim upside-down by their ankles. Petrificus Totalus, known as the Full Body-Bind Curse, temporarily binds the victim's body in a position much like that of a soldier at attention; the victim will usually consequently fall to the ground.
The rest of these spells do little damage, more so to just be a prick. Rictusempra, the Tickling Charm, tickles the target until they become weak with laughter, while the Flame-Freezing Charm causes fire to tickle those caught in it instead of burning them. Relashio, forces the target to release its grip on whatever it is holding or binding, like a knock-off Expelliarmus. The Trip Jinx forces the target to trip and fall over.
Useful spells:
There are a few more useful spells that are worth mentioning. Apparition teleports the user by having them focus on the desired location in their mind, then disappear from their current location and instantly reappear at their target location which grants Harry great movement. Unsupported flight also helps him to fly through the air unaided. Ascendio is similar, lifting the caster high into the air and above water. The Bubble-Head Charm produces a large bubble of air around the head of the user, commonly used underwater. The Stamina Charm restores Stamina.
The Vanishing Spell can rid of either animate and inanimate objects by causing them to vanish. Arresto Momentum, or the Slowing Charm, decreases the velocity of a moving target. Impedimenta is similar in slowing down opponents while Immobulus stops them entirely. Diminuendo and Reducio both force a target to shrink. Legilimens allow the caster to delve into the mind of the victim, allowing the caster to see the memories, thoughts, and emotions of the victim. Patented Daydream Charm gives the spell caster a highly-realistic half-an-hour daydream.
Defensive Spells:
The Protection Charm enhances an individual's defense, protecting from harm. Protego, the Shield Charm, creates a field that rebounds jinxes, curses, and hexes towards the attacker, and Fianto Duri can strengthen shield spells. Expecto Patronum conjures a spirit guardian of their positive emotions to defend against dark creatures, and Fumos produces a thick smokescreen that hinders visibility.
Healing Spells:
Alongside Healing Potions, Harry can recover from physical wounds with Healing spells. Spells like Episkey can heal minor injuries like broken bones, whilst Vulnera Sanentur can slow blood flow and knit wounds.
Transfiguration Spells
Transfiguration is the branch of magic that focuses on altering the form or appearance of an object, animal or person.
Avifors, Piscifors, Pullus, Ducklifors or Lapifors transform its target into a bird, fish, chicken, duck or rabbit respectively. Entomorph is used to transform the target into an insectoid temporarily. Tentaclifors transfigures the target's head into a tentacle, while the Ears to Kumquats Spell transforms the victim's ears into kumquats. Herbifors cause flowers to sprout from the victim. Hanahaki disease, eat your heart out. Draconifors transform the target into a dragon. Sounds really cool not gonna lie.
Unforgivable curses:
The unforgivable Curses are three of the most powerful, sinister and cruel spells known to man. Tools of Dark Magic, they were classified as unforgivable with the strictest penalties attached to their use.
Imperio, should it be casted successfully, places the victim under a catatonic state whereby they are unquestionably obedient, leaving them utterly susceptible to the caster's will. It is unique out of the unforgivable curses as it can be overcome with great enough will.
Crucio brings forth unimaginable excruciating physical pain on the recipient of the curse. Described as “white-hot knives piercing every inch of the skin”, prolonged exposure overtime can result in insanity. However, the spell can only be cast by a true, deep desire to cause the victim pain and take great pleasure in their suffering, void of anger or spite.
Avada Kedavra, the Killing Curse, when casted onto a living being causes an instantaneous and painless death. It leaves no trace of violence on the body, and is Voldemorts’s signature spell. Compared to the Pimple Jinx, a painless death doesn't actually sound that bad.
Resistances:
Occlumency:
Occlumency is the art of magically closing the mind against intrusion via Legilimency —the act of navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. Doing this successfully protects the mind from external manipulation. Harry has not mastered the art of Occlumency, although he has learnt it.
Percy Jackson:
Equipment:
Riptide:
Otherwise known by its Greek name Anaklusmos, Riptide is a medium length xiphos forged from Celestial Bronze. Celestial Bronze is a material that only harms foes if they are important enough. Typically mortals are exempt due to their unimportance, leaving the sword lethal towards only those of divinity such as Gods and Monsters. It is a weapon perfect for Percy, its weight balancing well in his hands. The sword does more than kill its target –it dissolves their essence from the inside out.
Piper tried to stay positive, but privately she had told Leo how worried she was. Ambrosia, nectar and mortal medicine could only help so much. A deep cut from Celestial bronze or Imperial gold could literally dissolve a demigod’s essence from the inside out. Jason might get better. He claimed he felt better. But Piper wasn’t so sure.
It is hidden in the disguise of a low quality disposable ballpoint pen that reads “Anaklusmos” on the side when not in use. Once the pen is uncapped, it transforms into its true sword form. Should he lose his sword or pen, it will rematerialise in his pocket in its pen form.
Percy: I tucked it in my pocket, a little nervous, because I was famous for losing pens at school. “You can’t,” Chiron said. “Can’t what?” “Lose the pen,” he said. “It is enchanted. It will always reappear in your pocket. Try it.” I was wary, but I threw the pen as far as I could down the hill and watched it disappear in the grass. “It may take a few moments,” Chiron told me. “Now check your pocket.” Sure enough, the pen was there.
However, Riptide likely also works against mortals of greater importance, such as magicians. This is seen in the Son of Sobek, where Percy Jackson duels with a magician called Carter Kane, who has only mortal blood.
Carter Kane: I threw it and yelled the command word “TAS!”—Bind!—just as Camper Boy’s bronze blade cut into my wrist. My whole arm erupted in agony. My vision tunneled. Yellow spots danced before my eyes. I dropped my sword and clutched my wrist, gasping for breath, everything forgotten except the excruciating pain.
Wristwatch shield:
The Wristwatch Shield is a gift given to Percy from Tyson, his Cyclops half-brother. It is a shield encased within the disguise of a watch. When activated, the shield spirals outward, exposing its intricate design made from durable polished Bronze.
Mrs O’Leary & Blackjack:
Mrs. O'Leary is Percy's pet hellhound —massive dog-like monsters from the Underworld. She is believed to be one of the only friendly hellhounds in existence. She can be summoned with Stygian Ice Whistle.
Blackjack is Percy’s pegasus, serving as his primary means of transportation on the ground and in the air. Oftentimes, other Pegasi accompany Blackjack to go to Percy, and they will mutually help each other.
Abilities:
Demigod Physicality:
Each Demigod is unique, but they all share a few common traits among them. They are all superhuman, with even the average demigod pushing the limits of what humans are capable of. They all also come with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) that give them enhanced senses.
Annabeth: Taken together, it’s almost a sure sign. The letters float off the page when you read, right? That’s because your mind is hardwired for ancient Greek. And the ADHD-you’re impulsive, can’t sit still in the classroom. That's your battlefield reflexes. In a real fight, they'd keep you alive. As for the attention problems, that's because you see too much, Percy, not too little. Your senses are better than a regular mortal.
Percy: My senses were working overtime. I now understood what Annabeth had said about ADHD keeping you alive in battle. I was wide awake, noticing every little detail. I could see where Ares was tensing. I could tell which way he would strike. At the same time, I was aware of Annabeth and Grover, thirty feet to my left. I saw a second cop car pulling up, siren wailing. Spectators, people who had been wandering the streets because of the earthquake, were starting to gather. Among the crowd, I thought I saw a few who were walking with the strange, trotting gait of disguised satyrs. There were shimmering forms of spirits, too, as if the dead had risen from Hades to watch the battle. I heard the flap of leathery wings circling somewhere above.
Percy, as the son of the God of the sea, has a deep connection to the sea. This allows him to sense movements in the sea, feel for the presence of natural objects and stirring sea animals.
Percy: Percy stared into the fog. He couldn’t see anything around them, but he had perfect bearings at sea. He knew their exact latitude and longitude. He knew the depth of the ocean and which way the currents were flowing. He knew the ship’s speed, and could sense no rocks, sandbars, or other natural dangers in their path.
Hydrokinesis:
Percy can manipulate water, being the son of the Sea God and all. Water bends to his will which he often uses for its massive area effect and its incredible power in large volumes. He also uses it to grab others to trap them, such as when he grabbed someone using water from the water fountain.
Percy: I tried to stay cool. The school counselor had told me a million times, “Count to ten, get control of your temper.” But I was so mad my mind went blank. A wave roared in my ears. I don’t remember touching her, but the next thing I knew, Nancy was sitting on her butt in the fountain, screaming, “Percy pushed me!” Mrs. Dodds materialized next to us. Some of the kids were whispering: “Did you see—” “—the water—” “—like it grabbed her—”
He also uses water as a projectile, such as making water hands to grab gorgons who were trying to fly away. He smashes them before summoning a whirlpool to stop them from despawning.
Percy: Percy thrust out his hands. An intense tugging sensation filled his gut, and the Tiber obeyed his will. The river surged. Whirlpools formed on either side of Frank. Giant watery hands erupted from the stream, copying Percy’s movements. The giant hands grabbed the gorgons, who dropped Frank in surprise. Then the hands lifted the squawking monsters in a liquid vise grip.
Percy heard the other kids yelping and backing away, but he stayed focused on his task. He made a smashing gesture with his fists, and the giant hands plunged the gorgons into the Tiber. The monsters hit bottom and broke into dust. Glittering clouds of gorgon essence struggled to re- form, but the river pulled them apart like a blender. Soon every trace of the gorgons was swept downstream. The whirlpools vanished, and the current returned to normal.
He can also manipulate water to form more complex structures, such as Water Shields that can block thousands of projectiles launched at him from 2 river gods.
Percy: Before I could protest, a thousand scraps of garbage surged off the bottom and flew straight at me from both directions: broken glass, rocks, cans, tires.I was expecting it, though. The water in front of me thickened into a shield. The debris bounced off harmlessly.
He can also get very creative with how he forms constructs with water, such as choking a goddess with her own tears.
Percy: As the flood of venom rolled towards the goddess, the fumes began to make her cough. Her eyes watered even more. Oh, good, Percy thought. More water. Percy imagined her nose and throat filling with her own tears. Akhlys gagged. ‘I -’ The tide of venom reached her feet, sizzling like droplets on a hot iron. She wailed and stumbled back.
‘Percy!’ Annabeth called. She’d retreated to the edge of the cliff, even though the poison wasn’t after her. She sounded terrified. It took Percy a moment to realize she was terrified of him. ‘Stop ...’ she pleaded, her voice hoarse. He didn’t want to stop. He wanted to choke this goddess. He wanted to watch her drown in her own poison. He wanted to see just how much misery Misery could take. ‘Percy, please ... ’ Annabeth’s face was still pale and corpse-like, but her eyes were the same as always. The anguish in them made Percy’s anger fade. He turned to the goddess. He willed the poison to recede, creating a small path of retreat along the edge of the cliff. ‘Leave!’ he bellowed. For an emaciated ghoul, Akhlys could run pretty fast when she wanted to. She scrambled.
He can also manipulate water to his will to acknowledge more complex tasks, such as removing water from one’s lungs.
Piper: With a cry of alarm, Piper realized that Percy's and Jason's faces were still underwater. She hoisted them up. Instantly, Percy gulped and began to thrash, but Jason was as lifeless as a rag doll. Piper clung to him. She yelled his name, shook him, and slapped his face. She barely noticed when all the water had drained away and left them on the damp floor.
"Jason!" She tried desperately to think. Should she turn him on his side? Slap his back? "Piper," Percy said, "I can help." He knelt next to her and touched Jason's forehead. Water gushed from Jason's mouth. His eyes flew open, and a clap of thunder threw Percy and Piper backward. When Piper's vision cleared, she saw Jason sitting up, still gasping, but the color was coming back to his face. "Sorry," he coughed. "Didn't mean to — " Piper tackled him with a hug. She would have kissed him, but she didn't want to suffocate him. Percy grinned. "In case you're wondering, that was clean water in your lungs. I could make it come out with no problem."
He is also very precise with his water manipulation, being able to burst the arteries of a primordial being.
Percy: Stomping on Tartarus’s heart wasn’t nearly as much fun as it sounded. The purplish ground was slippery and constantly pulsing. It looked flat from a distance, but up close it was made of folds and ridges that got harder to navigate the further they walked. Gnarled lumps of red arteries and blue veins gave Percy some footholds when he had to climb, but the going was slow. And, of course, the monsters Bob grunted…
‘One of the five rivers. His blood.’‘His blood?’ Annabeth stepped away from the nearest clump of veins. ‘I knew the Underworld rivers all emptied into Tartarus, but –’‘Yes,’ Bob agreed. ‘They all flow through his heart.’ Percy traced his hand across a web of capillaries. Was the water of the Styx flowing beneath his fingers, or maybe the Lethe? If one of those veins popped when he stepped on it ... Percy shuddered. He realized he was taking a stroll across the most dangerous circulatory system in the universe. Percy gave a battle cry. At the Cyclopes’ feet, a red vein in the ground burst open, spraying the monsters with liquid fire from the Phlegethon.
Water Power Up:
Percy gains more power the closer he is to a source of water. When he is in direct contact with water, he gains significant boosts in strength, speed and focus. The sources of water can range from seas and rivers, to even a bit of ice water from a water bottle.
Percy: Luke poured ice water on his head, which looked like such a good idea, I did the same. Instantly, I felt better. Strength surged back into my arms. The sword didn't feel so awkward. "Okay, everybody circle up!" Luke ordered. "If Percy doesn't mind, I want to give you a little demo." Great, I thought. Let's all watch Percy get pounded.
The Hermes guys gathered around. They were suppressing smiles. I figured they'd been in my shoes before and couldn't wait to see how Luke used me for a punching bag. He told everybody he was going to demonstrate a disarming technique: how to twist the enemy's blade with the flat of your own sword so that he had no choice but to drop his weapon. "This is difficult," he stressed. "I've had it used against me. No laughing at Percy, now. Most swordsmen have to work years to master this technique." He demonstrated the move on me in slow motion. Sure enough, the sword clattered out of my hand.
"Now in real time," he said, after I'd retrieved my weapon. "We keep sparring until one of us pulls it off. Ready, Percy?" I nodded, and Luke came after me. Somehow, I kept him from getting a shot at the hilt of my sword. My senses opened up. I saw his attacks coming. I countered. I stepped forward and tried a thrust of my own. Luke deflected it easily, but I saw a change in his face. His eyes narrowed, and he started to press me with more force. The sword grew heavy in my hand. The balance wasn't right. I knew it was only a matter of seconds before Luke took me down, so I figured, What the heck? I tried the disarming maneuver. My blade hit the base of Luke's and I twisted, putting my whole weight into a downward thrust.
Clang.Luke's sword rattled against the stones. The tip of my blade was an inch from his undefended chest. The other campers were silent. I lowered my sword. "Um, sorry." For a moment, Luke was too stunned to speak. "Sorry?" His scarred face broke into a grin. "By the gods, Percy, why are you sorry? Show me that again!" I didn't want to. The short burst of manic energy had completely abandoned me.
In his battle against the God of War Ares and his cabin, he was stabbed and fell into a creek. Upon being exposed to the water, he defeats Ares and his group with relative ease.
Percy: He pushed me into the creek and I landed with a splash. They all laughed. I figured as soon as they were through being amused, I would die. But then something happened. The water seemed to wake up my senses, as if I'd just had a bag of my mom's double-espresso jelly beans.Clarisse and her cabinmates came into the creek to get me, but I stood to meet them. I knew what to do. I swung the flat of my sword against the first guy's head and knocked his helmet clean off. I hit him so hard I could see his eyes vibrating as he crumpled into the water.
Ugly Number Two and Ugly Number Three came at me. I slammed one in the face with my shield and used my sword to shear off the other guy's horsehair plume. Both of them backed up quick. Ugly Number Four didn't look really anxious to attack, but Clarisse kept coming, the point of her spear crackling with energy. As soon as she thrust, I caught the shaft between the edge of my shield and my sword, and I snapped it like a twig. "Ah!" she screamed. "You idiot! You corpse-breath worm!" She probably would've said worse, but I smacked her between the eyes with my sword-butt and sent her stum-bling backward out of the creek.
Water Healing:
Outside of getting a power boost, getting in contact with water gives Percy enhanced healing. This allows him to heal from cuts and injuries in mere moments, as long as he is in contact with water.
Percy: Two of them came at me. I backed up toward the creek, tried to raise my shield, but Clarisse was too fast. Her spear stuck me straight in the ribs. If I hadn't been wearing an armored breastplate, I would've been shish-ke-babbed. As it was, the electric point just about shocked my teeth out of my mouth. One of her cabinmates slashed his sword across my arm, leaving a good-size cut. Seeing my own blood made me dizzy — warm and cold at the same time.
"No maiming," I managed to say. "Oops," the guy said. "Guess I lost my dessert privilege. He pushed me into the creek and I landed with a splash. They all laughed. I figured as soon as they were through being amused, I would die. But then something happened. The water seemed to wake up my senses, as if I'd just had a bag of my mom's double-espresso jelly beans. Clarisse and her cabinmates came into the creek to get me, but I stood to meet them. I knew what to do. I swung the flat of my sword against the first guy's head and knocked his helmet clean off. I hit him so hard I could see his eyes vibrating as he crumpled into the water.
His healing from water in some cases are nigh-instantaneous, sealing up large wounds in seconds.
Percy: We watched the body of the hellhound melt into shadow, soaking into the ground until it disappeared. "You're wounded," Annabeth told me. "Quick, Percy, get in the water." "I'm okay." "No, you're not," she said. "Chiron, watch this." I was too tired to argue. I stepped back into the creek, the whole camp gathering around me. Instantly, I felt better. I could feel the cuts on my chest closing up.
Storm Generation:
Control over water also allows Percy to generate enormous storms, willingly or even unconsciously. The most notable occasion of this is in his battle against the Titan Hyperion, where he unconsciously conjured up a hurricane that had a radius of over 20 yards that was putting out fires. By amplifying the storm with his powers, he was able to momentarily entirely overwhelm the Titan with the wind and rain alone.
Percy: Hyperion closed on me with blinding speed. I concentrated on the water, drawing strength from it. Hyperion attacked. He was powerful and fast, but he couldn't seem to land a blow. The ground around his feet kept erupting in flames, but I kept dousing it just as quickly. "Stop it!" the Titan roared. "Stop that wind!". I wasn't sure what he meant. I was too busy fighting. Hyperion stumbled like he was being pushed away. Water sprayed his face, stinging his eyes. The wind picked up, and Hyperion staggered backward.
"Percy!" Grover called in amazement. "How are you doing that?" Doing what? I thought. Then I looked down, and I realized I was standing in the middle of my own personal hurricane. Clouds of water vapor swirled around me, winds so powerful they buffeted Hyperion and flattened the grass in a twenty-yard radius. Enemy warriors threw javelins at me, but the storm knocked them aside.
"Sweet," I muttered. "But a little more!" Lightning flickered around me. The clouds darkened and the rain swirled faster. I closed in on Hyperion and blew him off his feet. "Percy!" Grover called again. "Bring him over here!" I slashed and jabbed, letting my reflexes take over, Hyperion could barely defend himself. His eyes kept trying to ignite, but the hurricane quenched his flames. I couldn't keep up a storm like this forever, though. I could feel my powers weakening. With one last effort, I propelled Hyperion across the field, straight to where Grover was waiting.
Wolf Stare:
Percy has an Alpha Stare. A literal stare that he learnt from the wolf goddess Lupa that he uses to scare people.
Percy: They got off in Oakland. They had to walk through some rough neighborhoods, but nobody bothered them. Whenever the local gang members came close enough to look in Percy’s eyes, they quickly veered away. He’d perfected his wolf stare over the last few months—a look that said: However bad you think you are, I’m worse. After strangling sea monsters and running over gorgons in a police car, Percy wasn’t scared of gangs. Pretty much nothing in the mortal world scared him anymore.
Resistances:
Heat Resistance:
Being the son of Poseidon, the god of a lot of water, Percy can handle high levels of heat. He has survived hot fires on many occasions, even powering through a heat spell that knocked out mortals in seconds and threatened to burn down a town.
Percy: As I wrestled her, trying to pull her off balance, the temperature onstage began to rise. The celedon's lyrics were in Ancient Greek, but I caught a few of the words: Apollo, sunlight, golden fire. It was some kind of ode to the god. Her metal skin grew hot. I smelled something burning and realized it was my shirt. I stumbled away from her, my clothes smoldering. The wax had melted out of my ears so I could hear her song clearly. All around Times Square, people started dropping from the heat. Over at the barricades, Grover played wildly on the lyre, but he was too anxious to focus. Random bricks fell from the sky. One of the monitor speakers on stage morphed into a chicken. A plate of enchiladas appeared at the celedon's feet.
“Not helpful!” I shouted through the pain of the rising heat. ‘ Sing about cages! Or gags!” The air felt like a blast furnace. If the celedon kept this up Midtown would burst into flames. I couldn't afford to play nice anymore. As the celedon started her next verse, I hinged at her with my sword. She lurched away with surprising speed. The tip of my blade missed her face by an inch. I’d managed to stop her singing, and she was not happy about it.
He is not infallible to heat, but he can sure handle a lot of it. He was momentarily bathed in lava, and despite it being extremely painful, survived the encounter with minimal injuries. The lava from a furnace can range in temperature from at least 700 ⁰C and often go over 1000 ⁰C.
Percy: Before I could make up my mind, the tallest telekhine said, “Let us see how strong he is. Let us see how long it takes him to burn!”. He scooped some lava out of the nearest furnace. It set his fingers ablaze, but this didn’t seem to bother him at all. The other elder telekhines did the same. The first one threw a glop of molten rock at me and set my pants on fire. Two more splattered across my chest. I dropped my sword in sheer terror and swatted at my clothes. Fire was engulfing me. Strangely, it felt only warm at first, but it was getting hotter by the instant.
“Your father’s nature protects you,” one said. “Makes you hard to burn. But not impossible, youngling. Not impossible.” They threw more lava at me, and I remember screaming. My whole body was on fire. The pain was worse than anything I’d ever felt. I was being consumed. I crumpled to the metal floor and heard the sea demon children howling in delight.
Then I remembered the voice of the river naiad at the ranch: The water is within me.I needed the sea. I felt a tugging sensation in my gut, but I had nothing around to help me. Not a faucet or a river. Not even a petrified seashell this time. And besides, the last time I’d unleashed my power at the stables, there’d been that scary moment when it had almost gotten away from me.I had no choice. I called to the sea. I reached inside myself and remembered the waves and the currents, the endless power of the ocean. And I let it loose in one horrible scream.
Magic Resistance:
Demigods are genetically resistant to magic and other supernatural forces. For instance, Percy and other of his demigod allies were not affected by a spell that knocked out millions of mortals and disabled their technology. Although the spell is weaker due to having such a large area of effect, it demonstrates that demigods have a far greater resistance to magic compared to mortals.
Percy: Even from this height, I should've heard the noise of the city—millions of people bustling around, thousands of cars and machines—the hum of a huge metropolis. You don't think about it when you live in New York, but it's always there. Even in the dead of night, New York is never silent. But it was now.
I felt like my best friend had suddenly dropped dead. "What did they do?" My voice sounded tight and angry. "What did they do to my city?" I pushed Michael Yew away from the binoculars and took a look. In the streets below, traffic had stopped. Pedestrians were lying on the sidewalks, or curled up in doorways. There was no sign of violence, no wrecks, nothing like that. It was as if all the people in New York had simply decided to stop whatever they were doing and pass out. "Are they dead?" Silena asked in astonishment. Ice coated my stomach. A line from the prophecy rang in my ears: And see the world in endless sleep. I remembered Grover's story about meeting the god Morpheus in Central Park. You're lucky I'm saving my energy for the main event. "Not dead," I said. "Morpheus has put the entire island of Manhattan to sleep. The invasion has started."
Pollux crouched next to a sleeping policeman. "I don't get it. Why didn't we fall asleep too? Why just the mortals?" "This is a huge spell," Silena Beauregard said. "The bigger the spell, the easier it is to resist. If you want to sleep millions of mortals, you've got to cast a very thin layer of magic. Sleeping demigods is much harder." What's happening with the mortals outside Manhattan?" I said. "Is the whole state asleep? Annabeth frowned. "I don't think so, but it's strange. As far as I can tell from these pictures, Manhattan is totally asleep. Then there's like a fifty-mile radius around the island where time is running really, really slow. The closer you get to Manhattan, the slower it is." They shouted in response, and our forty voices echoed off the buildings of Midtown. For a moment it sounded brave, but it died quickly in the silence of ten million sleeping New Yorkers. Annabeth and I would've had our pick of cars, but they were all wedged in bumper-to-bumper traffic. None of the engines were running, which was weird. It seemed the drivers had had time to turn off the ignition before they got too sleepy. Or maybe Morpheus had the power to put engines to sleep as well.
Percy himself has also broken and overcome many spells before, such as:
A dance spell…
Percy: Once we made it to the roof, the celedon was easy to find. She was in human form, standing at the edge of the building with her arms spread, serenading Times Square with her own rendition of "New York, New York." I really hate that song, I don’t know anybody who's actually from New York who doesn’t hate that song, but hearing her sing it made me hate it a whole lot more.
Even though she was facing the other way, her music filled me with the urge to dance (which, believe me, you never want to see). I forced myself to keep going, but fighting her magic was like pushing my way through a row of heavy drapes. My plan was simple: Gag the celedon. She would turn back into a bird and try to escape. I would grab her and shove her into a birdcage. What could go wrong?
On the last line of "New York, New York,” I jumped on her back, locking my legs around her waist and yanking the blindfold across her mouth like a horse's bridle. Her grand finale was cut short with a “New r Yor—urff!” "Grover, now!" I yelled. The celedon stumbled forward. I had a dizzying view of the chaos below in Times Square- cops trying to clear the crowd, lines of tourists doing impromptu high-kick routines like the Radio City Rockettes.
A time dilation spell…
Percy: Time slowed down. I mean literally slowed down, because Kronos had that power. I felt like I was moving through syrup. My arms were so heavy, I could barely raise my sword. Kronos smiled, swirling his scythe at normal speed and waiting for me to creep toward my death. I tried to fight his magic. I concentrated on the sea around me-the source of my power. I'd gotten better at channeling it over the years, but now nothing seemed to happen.I took another slow step forward. Giants jeered. Dracaenae hissed with laughter. Hey, ocean, I pleaded. Any day now would be good. Suddenly there was a wrenching pain in my gut. The entire boat lurched sideways, throwing monsters off their feet. Four thousand gallons of salt water surged out of the swimming pool, dousing me and Kronos and everyone on the deck. The water revitalized me, breaking the time spell, and I lunged forward.
And the Celadon's spell, which was meant to make him lose resolve and give up.
Percy: As I was dangling there, the celedon began a special serenade just for me. She sang about letting go, laying down my troubles, resting by the banks of a river, I don’t remember the exact lyrics, but you get the idea. It was all I could do to hold on. I didn’t want to drop, but the celedon’s music washed over me, dismantling my resolve. I imagined that I would float down safely. I would land on the banks of a lazy river, where I could have a nice relaxing picnic with my girlfriend, Annabeth.
I remembered the time I’d saved Annabeth from the Sirens in the Sea of Monsters. I’d held her while she cried and struggled, trying to swim to her death because she thought she would reach some beautiful promised land. Now I imagined she was holding me back. I could hear what she’d say: It’s a trick, Seaweed Brain! You’ve got to trick her back or you'll die. And if you die. III never forgive you! That broke the celedon’s spell. Annabeth's anger was way scarier than most monsters, but don't tell her I said that.
Mental Resistance:
A semi-continuation of his resistance to magic, Percy has a layer of mental defenses that stem from his will. Percy's will is unmatched, which was what allowed him to form the reputation he has now. It also acts as a means of overcoming mental attacks.
Other than having natural defences as a demigod and overpowering other magical based mental attacks such as the Celadon’s spell, he has also resisted Medusa's charm speak. Medusa's Charm Speak makes people do as told, even if it is something they would typically be unwilling to do.
Percy: Go ahead, call me an idiot for walking into a strange lady's shop like that just because I was hungry, but I do impulsive stuff sometimes. Plus, you've never smelled Aunty Em's burgers. The aroma was like laughing gas in the den-tist's chair-it made everything else go away. I barely noticed Grover's nervous whimpers, or the way the statues' eyes seemed to follow me, or the fact that Aunty Em had locked the door behind us.
I was feeling satisfied after the burger, and a little sleepy. I wasn't sure what she meant, but I felt bad for her. My eyelids kept getting heavier, my full stomach making me sleepy. Poor old lady. Who would want to hurt somebody so nice? I didn't want to leave. I felt full and content. Aunty Em was so nice. I wanted to stay with her a while. I was fighting the sleepy feeling, the comfortable lull that came from the food and the old lady's voice. I couldn't move. I stared at Aunty Em's gnarled claws, and tried to fight the groggy trance the old woman had put me in. "Such a pity to destroy a handsome young face," she told me soothingly. "Stay with me, Percy. All you have to do is look up." I fought the urge to obey. Instead I looked to one side and saw one of those glass spheres people put in gardens. I could see the reflection of her face now. Surely it wasn't really that ugly. The green swirls of the gazing ball must be distorting it, making it look worse.
"You wouldn't harm an old woman, Percy," she crooned. "I know you wouldn't." I hesitated, fascinated by the face I saw reflected in the glass-the eyes that seemed to burn straight through the green tint, making my arms go weak. From the cement grizzly, Grover moaned, "Percy, don't listen to her!" Medusa cackled. "Too late." She lunged at me with her talons. I slashed up with my sword, and heard a sickening shlock!, then a hiss like wind rushing out of a cavern-the sound of a monster disintegrating. Perseus almost glanced over to make sure he was seeing it correctly in the reflection... you know those optical-illusion pictures that make you dizzy and nauseous if you stare at them too long? Medusa’s face was like that, except a thousand times worse. Perseus kept his eyes on the reflection in the shield. His hand was so sweaty he could barely hold his sword.
He is also responsible for one of the greatest feats of will in the world, holding up the skies. It is deemed that only a hero, with strength, courage, and a true heart, can lift the sky. Other characters with extremely high levels of will, such as Annabeth, nearly died attempting to lift it.
Percy: "From holding the sky," Thalia muttered, as if she'd read my mind. "The weight should've killed her." "I don't understand," I said. "Why can't Artemis just let go of the sky?" Atlas laughed. "How little you understand, young one. This is the point where the sky and the earth first met, where Ouranos and Gaia first brought forth their mighty children, the Titans. The sky still yearns to embrace the earth. Someone must hold it at bay, or else it would crush down upon this place, instantly flattening the mountain and everything within a hundred leagues. Once you have taken the burden, there is no escape." Atlas smiled. "Unless someone else takes it from you."
"Annabeth took it!" "She barely survived. She had the spirit of a true huntress. You will not last so long." "I'll die anyway," I said. "Give me the weight of the sky!" I didn't wait for her answer. I took out Riptide and slashed through her chains. Then I stepped next to her and braced myself on one knee—holding up my hands—and touched the cold, heavy clouds. For a moment, Artemis and I bore the weight together. It was the heaviest thing I'd ever felt, as if I were being crushed under a thousand trucks. I wanted to black out from the pain, but I breathed deeply. I can do this. Then Artemis slipped out from under the burden, and I held it alone. Afterward, I tried many times to explain what it felt like. I couldn't. Every muscle in my body turned to fire. My bones felt like they were melting. I wanted to scream, but I didn't have the strength to open my mouth. I began to sink, lower and lower to the ground, the sky's weight crushing me. Fight back! Grover's voice said inside my head. Don't give up. I concentrated on breathing. If I could just keep the sky aloft a few more seconds. I thought about Bianca, who had given her life so we could get here. If she could do that, I could hold the sky.
Scaling:
Harry Potter:
Misc. Wizarding World Character:
"It is our choices, Harry, that show what
we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
The Wizarding World is one where Wizards and Magic was real, and had existed through all of history. Humans are separated into different tiers depending on their magical prowess, ranging from Muggles who have no magical prowess to Pure-Bloods.
Harry, being one of the most powerful wizards in his universe, should be more powerful than a good majority of the characters in the Wizarding World.
A notable mention is Harry's uncle and adoptive father Vernon Dursley. Given that Harry has had four parents and three of them are dead, it's honestly remarkable that he is alive. Although, given his treatment of Harry as a kid, it is questionable whether that is a good thing.
Friends and Teachers:
"If you're going to kill Harry,
you'll have to kill us, too."
Who is Harry Potter without the people who accompanied him along the journey? Harry has raked up a strong cast of friends to support him that he met after entering the magical city of Hogwards.
His list of allies include:
Hermione Granger
Ron Weasley
Neville Longbottom
Luna Lovegood
Teddy Lupin
Alastor Moody
Sirius Black
Remus Lupin
Being the prodigy of the Boy who lived, he should reasonably scale above the rest of his peers and teachers, especially in his later years as he matures and accumulates more knowledge.
Death Eaters:
“Magic is Might”
The Death Eaters, firmly known as Knights of Walpurgis, are the main followers of the mighty Lord Voldemort. They consist of radical pure-blood supremacists who dabbled frequently in the Dark Arts. They wished to practice the Dark Arts as they pleased without needing to adhere to the Wizarding Law.
The most notable of them are Draco Malfoy and Severus Snape —who is likely the most powerful Death Eater— who both defected from Voldemort. Harry has had multiple encounters with different members of the Death Eaters, notably dueling Draco Malfoy in the bathroom and nearly killing him with Sectumsempra.
Harry: “SECTUMSEMPRA!'” bellowed Harry from the floor, waving his wand wildly. Blood spurted from Malfoy's face and chest as though he had been slashed with an invisible sword. He staggered backwards and collapsed onto the waterlogged floor with a great splash, his wand falling from his limp right hand.
“No-” gasped Harry. Slipping and staggering, Harry got to his feet and plunged a shining scarlet, his towards Malfoy: whose face was now white hands scrabbling at his blood-soaked chest. “No -I didn't -” Harry did not know what he was saying; he fell to his knees beside Malfoy, who was shaking uncontrollably in a pool of his own blood. Moaning Myrtle let out a deafening scream
Dumbledore & Lord Voldemort:
“It does not do to dwell on
dreams and forget to live.”
The two most powerful sorcerers in the series: Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, and Voldemort, the one who should not be named. Dumbledore serves as Harry’s teacher throughout the series, even beyond his death. Voldemort is the main antagonist, looking to become immortal and conquer the world.
While Harry is clearly weaker than Voldemort and Dumbledore, he isn't too far behind. He has matched Voldemort in power before, even if it is momentarily, showing that he should at least downscale them. Harry has also likely grown since the defeat of Voldemort, with him becoming an Auror i
The Wizard of the Month: The Boy Who Lived, only known survivor of the Avada Kedavra curse and conqueror of Lord Voldemort, also known as Tom Riddle. Harry Potter joined the reshuffled Auror Department under Kingsley Shacklebolt at age 17, rising to become Head of said department in 2007.
He and Hermione are still active two decades after the defeat of Voldemort, battling the mysterious organisation, the Unforgivable, as recently as 2021.
Percy Jackson:
Miscellaneous Riordanverse Character:
“Go on with what your heart tells you,
or you will lose it all.”
The Riordanverse is an urban fantasy story where the ancient myths of gods in divine pantheons are true and still present in the modern world. It is revealed to Percy that he is a demigod, with one parent a human and the other a legendary god.
Percy, being one of the strongest demigods of the series —if not the strongest, should reasonably be more powerful than the average character in the verse.
A notable mention here is Percy’s mother, Sally Jackson, who miraculously manages to stay alive throughout the course of the series. Sally falls in love with Paul Blofis, who unlike Vernon Dursley, is actually a nice dude.
Friends & Demigods:
"I had spent thousands of miles worried
that I'd be betrayed by a friend, but
these friends would never do that"
Percy has gained his own fair share of allies and friends throughout his adventures. He meets a good majority of them at Camp Half-Blood,a training facility for Greek-demigods along the shore of an island. He also manages to acquire a few enemies along the way (looking at you Luke).
His list of allies include:
Grover Underwood, the Lord of the Wild
Annabeth Chase, the Daughter of Athena
Thalia Grace, the Daughter of Zeus
Nico di Angelo, the Son of Hades
Rachel Elizabeth Dare, a mortal Pythia
Hazel Levesque, the Daughter of Pluto
Leo Valdez, the Son of Hephaestus
Jason Grace, the Son of Jupiter
Piper McLean, the Daughter of Aphrodite
Frank Zhang, the Son of Mars
Clarisse La Rue, the Daughter of Ares
Naturally as the son of Posedian —one of the big 3 gods alongside Zeus and hades— Percy Jackson is naturally stronger than a good majority of his fellow Demigods. He certainly has a good reputation as well, with the other demigods consistently singing the praises of Percy, marvelling at his strength in both character and battle.
The Gods:
“There's always a way out for
those clever enough to find it.”
The Greek Gods are immortals who rule the universe, controlling the forces of nature and mankind. Percy primarily interacts with the Greek Gods, although there are also the Norse, Roman and Egyptian gods, who star in different stories.
A God in their natural state is so radiant with divine light that it usually disintegrates anything that looks at it. Hence, to interact with lower mortals, they take up lesser forms. While Demigods are usually completely outclassed by a God's true form, a God's lesser form is much more manageable.
Percy, while being weaker than the lesser forms of the Gods, is still able to contend with them. The most notable occasion of this is 12-year-old Percy managing to duel with Ares, the God of War. While Ares is holding back here, it still is an impressive showing, given that Ares is one of the stronger gods fighting against one of the more inexperienced versions of Percy Jackson.
Percy: He cleaved downward at my head, but I wasn't there. My body thought for me. The water seemed to push me into the air and I catapulted over him, slashing as I came down. But Ares was just as quick. He twisted, and the strike that should've caught him directly in the spine was deflected off the end of his sword hilt. He grinned. "Not bad, not bad." He slashed again and I was forced to jump onto dry land. I tried to sidestep, to get back to the water, but Ares seemed to know what I wanted. He outmaneuvered me, pressing so hard I had to put all my concentration on not getting sliced into pieces. I kept backing away from the surf. I couldn't find any openings to attack. His sword had a reach several feet longer than Anaklusmos.
Get in close, Luke had told me once, back in our sword class. When you've got the shorter blade, get in close. I stepped inside with a thrust, but Ares was waiting for that. He knocked my blade out of my hands and kicked me in the chest. I went airborne-twenty, maybe thirty feet. I would've broken my back if I hadn't crashed into the soft sand of a dune. "Percy!" Annabeth yelled. "Cops!" I was seeing double. My chest felt like it had just been hit with a battering ram, but I managed to get to my feet. I couldn't look away from Ares for fear he'd slice me in half, but out of the corner of my eye I saw red lights flash-ing on the shoreline boulevard. Car doors were slamming. "There, officer!" somebody yelled. "See?" A gruff cop voice: "Looks like that kid on TV ... what the heck ..." "That guy's armed," another cop said. "Call for backup." I rolled to one side as Ares's blade slashed the sand. I ran for my sword, scooped it up, and launched a swipe at Ares's face, only to find my blade deflected again. Ares seemed to know exactly what I was going to do the moment before I did it. I stepped back toward the surf, forcing him to follow.
"Admit it, kid," Ares said. "You got no hope. I'm just toying with you." My senses were working overtime.
More sirens. I stepped farther into the water, but Ares was fast. The tip of his blade ripped my sleeve and grazed my forearm. A police voice on a megaphone said, "Drop the guns.' Set them on the ground. Now!" Guns? I looked at Ares's weapon, and it seemed to be flicker-ing; sometimes it looked like a shotgun, sometimes a two-handed sword. I didn't know what the humans were seeing in my hands, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't make them like me. Ares turned to glare at our spectators, which gave me a moment to breathe. There were five police cars now, and a line of officers crouching behind them, pistols trained on us. "This is a private matter!" Ares bellowed. "Be gone.'" He swept his hand, and a wall of red flame rolled across the patrol cars. The police barely had time to dive for cover before their vehicles exploded. The crowd behind them scattered, screaming.
Ares roared with laughter. "Now, little hero. Let's add you to the barbecue." He slashed. I deflected his blade. I got close enough to strike, tried to fake him out with a feint, but my blow was knocked aside. The waves were hitting me in the back now. Ares was up to his thighs, wading in after me. I felt the rhythm of the sea, the waves growing larger as the tide rolled in, and suddenly I had an idea. Little waves, I thought. And the water behind me seemed to recede. I was holding back the tide by force of will, but tension was building, like carbonation behind a cork. Ares came toward, grinning confidently. I lowered my blade, as if I were too exhausted to go on. Wait for it, I told the sea. The pressure now was almost lifting me off my feet. Ares raised his sword. I released the tide and jumped, rocketing straight over Ares on a wave.
A six-foot wall of water smashed him full in the face, leaving him cursing and sputtering with a mouth full of sea-weed. I landed behind him with a splash and feinted toward his head, as I'd done before. He turned in time to raise his sword, but this time he was disoriented, he didn't anticipate the trick. I changed direction, lunged to the side, and stabbed Riptide straight down into the water, sending the point through the god's heel. The roar that followed made Hades's earthquake look like a minor event. The very sea was blasted back from Ares, leaving a wet circle of sand fifty feet wide. Ichor, the golden blood of the gods, flowed from a gash in the war god's boot. The expression on his face was beyond hatred. It was pain, shock, complete disbelief that he'd been wounded.
When being amplified by being in contact with water, Percy easily defeats Ares and his cabin. This shows that he should at least be on a similar level with some of the Gods, despite being a demigod.
Percy: He pushed me into the creek and I landed with a splash. They all laughed. I figured as soon as they were through being amused, I would die. But then something happened.
This is also supported by Percy briefly wrestling against Geras, who a warrior like Hercules could only stalemate. While Percy does end up losing, he does remarkably well against him.
Percy: “Annabeth gripped my shoulders. “Percy, you can’t do this.” “Hey, it isn’t something I want to do.” “You can’t beat him.” I wanted to argue that this was our best shot. It was a lot better than all three of us getting turned into grave dust. But I could tell from Annabeth’s expression that she had already run the angles. She was way ahead, as usual. “Hercules wrestled Old Age to a standstill,” she continued. “That’s the only time Geras has been forced to call a draw. Beating him is impossible.” “What was Hercules’s secret?” “No secret. Just brute force.” I rubbed my biceps and tried not to feel offended. I wasn’t weak, exactly, but superstrength wasn’t on my list of powers. I got breathe underwater and talk to horses instead, which weren’t so useful in a Greenwich Village playground smackdown.”
“Then Gary shook his head. “We’ll stick to the original arrangement.” “Fine,” I muttered. “When do we start?” I didn’t even have time to breathe. Suddenly Gary was on my back, his hands like steel clamps on my shoulders, his legs wrapped around my rib cage, his heels digging into me like I was an uncooperative horse. My knees buckled. The guy weighed a ton. I threw out my hands and broke my fall, my face only inches from the asphalt. His sour breath made my head swim. He said in my ear, “Oh, we can start whenever you like.” “Now I was locked in a wrestle-to-the-death contest with Gary the diapered god of halitosis. And I was losing. I tried to push against him, to force myself upright. It was like pushing against the roof of a tunnel. I twisted sideways, using his own weight to sling him off my back. I crawled away, gasping for breath, and barely had time to get to my feet before he slammed into me again, wrapping his arm around my neck. He pulled me into a side headlock, forcing my face dangerously close to his armpit. I really wished I hadn’t taken those menthol tissues out of my nostrils. “Oh, no,” Gary cackled. “You can’t run from Old Age.”
“Interference!” “It’s not interference,” Annabeth chimed in. “It’s commentary! Every wrestling match has commentary.” Their distraction bought me a few seconds, which I’d like to say I used to formulate a master plan. Instead, my thought process was: Oh gods I’m going to die help ow armpit armpit. This falls short of the criteria for master plan. I tried to shuffle sideways. Gary held me fast. I pushed forward with all my weight. I leaned back, hoping to pull him off-balance. Even though the guy was half my size, he didn’t budge. “Going somewhere?” he asked. With his free hand, he punched me in the ribs. The sound that came out of my throat would have alerted any walruses within a two-mile radius that I was looking for companionship. “Flag on the play!” Grover yelled. “Ten-yard penalty!” “No body blows!” Annabeth agreed. “That’s not wrestling!” “Shut up!” Gary complained. While his attention was divided, I managed to twist out of his headlock. I wrapped my arms around his chest and squeezed with all my might. I tugged and pushed, but I just couldn’t budge the guy. He laughed. “Having fun?” “That was impressive,” Gary said. “Now, shall we end this?” He plucked me off his chest like I was a tick, then threw me across the playground. “Percy!” Annabeth yelled. Her tone of concern was the only thing that saved me. As I sailed through the air, Annabeth’s voice electrified every molecule in my body. My senses went into overdrive. Instead of slamming into the play structure, I twisted in midair, grabbed one of the bars, swung around, and landed on my feet. ”
“Well . . . I say charged. It was more of a determined hobble” I had time to think, A plan would be really good now. Then he was on me. He tackled me and pushed me backward—right into a tetherball pole. My spine creaked, but the pole kept me upright, even gave me some leverage. I locked my hands around Gary’s biceps. My arms groaned. My vision dissolved into black and white strobe flashes. I managed to push Gary forward one step, then two. I was fueled not by strength but by desperation—and my rally didn’t last. Gary clamped his bony fingers around my shoulders. I am here to tell you: shoulders have a lot of nerve endings. Gary found them all. I screamed as he pushed me back against the tetherball pole. The metal began to bend. “You have lasted longer than most,” the old man conceded. “It was a good try.” A good try, I thought, my mind drowning in pain. Awesome. I couldn’t win, but at least I’d get a participation award from Old Age.”
While submerged in the water, he easily defeats Nereus, the God of the sea's great bounty of fish, which supports him being above the weaker Gods in terms of power.
Percy: Nereus plunged into the water and turned into a slimy eel. I started to tie him into a knot until he realized what was going on and changed back to human form. "Why won't you drown?" he wailed, pummeling me with his fists. "I'm Poseidon's son," I said. "Curse that upstart! I was here first!"Finally he collapsed on the edge of the boat dock. Above us was one of those tourist piers lined with shops, like a mall on water. Nereus was heaving and gasping. I was feeling great. I could've gone on all day, but I didn't tell him that. I wanted him to feel like he'd put up a good fight.
Titans:
“ Now, if you'll excuse us, we have a long
journey to make. We must greet your Hunters
and make sure their quest is... challenging. “
The arch-enemies of the Gods, the Titans are another group of Immortals that rule over the universe. The Titans seemed to have weakened over time, by tens of times. Kronos, their king, wishes to regain his former might and conquer Olympus.
Percy: "There is more," Mr. D warned. "Kronos has not yet attained full power. The body of the mortal was only a temporary measure." "We kind of guessed that." "And did you also guess that within a day at most, Kronos will burn away that mortal body and take on the true form of a Titan king?" "And that would mean . . ." Dionysus inserted another quarter. "You know about the true forms of the gods." "Yeah. You can't look at them without burning up."
"Kronos would be ten times more powerful. His very presence would incinerate you. And once he achieves this, he will empower the other Titans. They are wek now, compared to what they will soon become, unless you can stop them. The world will fall, the gods will die, and I will never achieve a perfect score on this stupid machine.”
Percy Jackson has battled against many Titans before, and while weaker, has done remarkably well — similarly to his battle with some of the Gods. With the Curse of Achilles, he has battled against Hyperion. Without the curse, he has battled Atlas alongside Artemis, the God of the Moon.
Percy: He bared his teeth. "Well see, my old friend." Sweat poured down my face. My hands were slippery. My shoulders would've screamed with agony if they could. I felt like the vertebrae in my spine were being welded together by a blowtorch. Atlas advanced, pressing Artemis. She was fast, but his strength was unstoppable. His javelin slammed into the earth where Artemis had been a split second before, and a fissure opened in the rocks. He leaped over it and kept pursuing her. She was leading him back toward me. Get ready, she spoke in my mind.
I was losing the ability to think through the pain. My response was something like Agggghh-owwwwwwww. "You fight well for a girl." Atlas laughed. "But you are no match for me." He feinted with the tip of his javelin and Artemis dodged. I saw the trick coming. Atlas's javelin swept around and knocked Artemis's legs off the ground. She fell, and Atlas brought up his javelin tip for the kill. "No!" Zoe screamed. She leaped between her father and Artemis and shot an arrow straight into the Titan's forehead, where it lodged like a unicorn's horn. Atlas bellowed in rage. He swept aside his daughter with the back of his hand, sending her flying into the black rocks. I wanted to shout her name, run to her aid, but I couldn't speak or move. I couldn't even see where Zoe had landed. Then Atlas turned on Artemis with a look of triumph in his face. Artemis seemed to be wounded. She didn't get up. "The first blood in a new war," Atlas gloated. And he stabbed downward.
As fast as thought, Artemis grabbed his javelin shaft. It hit the earth right next to her and she pulled backward, using the javelin like a lever, kicking the Titan Lord and sending him flying over her. I saw him coming down on top of me and I realized what would happen. I loosened my grip on the sky, and as Atlas slammed into me I didn't try to hold on. I let myself be pushed out of the way and rolled for all I was worth. The weight of the sky dropped onto Atlas's back, almost smashing him flat until he managed to get to his knees, struggling to get out from under the crushing weight of the sky. But it was too late. "Noooooo!" He bellowed so hard it shook the mountain. "Not again!" Atlas was trapped under his old burden. I tried to stand and fell back again, dazed from pain. My body felt like it was burning up.
Additionally, Percy Jackson should be physically on par with Jason Grace, the son of Jupiter, who won his battle against the Titan Krios unaided.
Jason: “No,” Jason said. He remembered flashes of the battle- giantin starry He remembered his army of demigods scaling Mount Tam, fighting through hordes of snake monsters. :It didn't just fall. We destroyed their palace. I defeated the Titan Krios myself. “
Percy has also battled against Kronos—the Titan of Time, Evil, and Harvest— with Kronos being only slightly stronger. He should reasonably scale, or at least downscale, from the Gods and the Titans.
Percy: Everywhere Kronos stepped, the roots wrapped around his feet, but Grover had stopped his magic too early. The roots weren't thick or strong enough to do much more than annoy the Titan. We fought through the hearth, kicking up coals and sparks. Kronos slashed an armrest off the throne of Ares, which was okay by me, but then he backed me up to my dad's throne. "Oh, yes, Kronos said, "This one will make fine kindling for my new hearth!"
Our blades clashed in a shower of sparks. He was stronger than me, but for the moment I felt the power of the ocean in my arms. I pushed him back and struck again-slashing Riptide across his breastplate so hard I cut a gash in the Celestial bronze. He stamped his foot again and time slowed. I tried to attack but I was moving at the speed of a glacier. Kronos backed up leisurely, catching his breath. He examined the gash in his armor while I struggled forward, silently cursing him. He could take all the time-outs he wanted. He could freeze me in place at will. My only hope was that the effort was draining him. If I could wear him down…
Power:
Let's start with the Magic Boi Harry Potter first. In terms of individual feats, he hasn't actually shown too many feats of incredible scale. In the games, he manages to form large ice constructs using the spell Glacius. These only reach a few tons of TNT, which isn't that noteworthy.
Lucky for him, Harry has a lot of peers that he is comparable to. He should be comparable to Dumbledore, who managed to create a pocket dimension with an exact replica of the city Berlin. This would yield 218 Megatons of TNT. Further yet, Credence Barebone manages to destroy an entire mountain of the Austrian Alps, yielding over 550 Megatons of TNT.
One of the greatest feats would funnily enough be caused by Zaccaria Innocenti, who messed up a Dancing Feet Spell so badly that it caused the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, leading to the consequent destruction of Pompei. The energy needed for the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius is a staggering 3.60 Gigatons of TNT.
The greatest feats come from Wizards forming really big clouds. Clouds, despite being relatively light, are huge. The energy required to move them is hence extremely high. For instance, Professor Rackham conjuring a storm in Hogwarts Legacy needed energies of 154 Megatons of TNT. Even greater than that, Professor Flitzgerald dispersing that same storm would require 6.42 Teratons of TNT! That's enough to wipe out a country.
How about Percy Jackson? He has plenty of high scale feats of his own, such as controlling the River Elisson, destroying the Hubbard Glacier, or creating massive storms. These feats get 9.29 Kilotons of TNT, 18.6 Kilotons of TNT and 4.56 Kilotons of TNT respectively, which is a good start.
Percy's greatest individual feat would be him triggering the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Just like the eruption that destroyed Pompei, causing natural disasters typically yields high amounts of energy. In this case, Percy exerted around 24 Megatons of TNT to trigger the volcano.
Then we get into feats performed by his peers. Jason, the Son of Jupiter, quickly gathered clouds to form a thunderstorm. Doing so would require 4.82 Gigatons of TNT, allowing Percy to match Harry's Pompei feat.
Khione is the God of the Snow and Daughter of Boreas. She is a relatively minor god, yet has one of the most impressive measurable feats in the series. Khione was able to freeze the Mediterranean during July, making dark clouds stretch to the horizon and rain freeze on contact with the boat to ward off the group of demigods. The energy needed to do this reaches 13.8 Petatons of TNT, which is enough energy to destroy several continents at once.
Most impressively would be from Artemis, the Goddess of the Wilderness and the Moon, and the twin sister of Apollo, the God of the Sun. Using her abilities, she casually made constellations appear into the sky, the energy required to do this being a whooping 58.6 Exatons of TNT, enough to destroy celestial bodies like the moon!
Artemis does this extremely casually after nearly being beaten to death by Atlas and while in her cosmically nerfed form, so Percy Jackson scaling to this makes sense. Feats of this kind aren't uncommon in the universe, as Zeus threatens to kill everyone on Earth by flooding the Earth, needing 25.6 Exatons of TNT.
Speed:
Let's start with Water Boi Percy Jackson. Let's start strong with Ephialtes and Jason both having reacted to lightning at Mach 2.93 and Mach 81.2 respectively. Percy should scale to both of them, making him solidly faster than sound.
Percy Jackson also reacts to a bullet in slow motion when attacking. Bullets are usually only around Mach speed, but given Percy viewed it in slow motion, he is potentially moving at Mach 1,130, over a thousand times faster than sound.
Percy’s greatest instance of speed comes from his battle with Hyperion. Hyperion's body releases a massive wave of light that Percy blocks from reaching his eyes, yet is still blinded. In order to do this, Percy must have been moving at 1.92% the speed of light, or at sub-relativistic speeds!
While Percy did this whilst having the Curse of Achilles, he also has encountered far stronger foes without the curse, so this feat likely still applies. It is also supported by Nico. Nico, thinking Percy was trying to kill him, epically opens a hole into the Underworld to stop him. This would require Nico to split the ground at 1.24% the speed of light.
Now onto Harry Potter, let's start off with Harry dodging lightning from Voldemort at Mach 70.9, around 71 times the speed of sound. Other of his peers can also react to lightning, such as Grindelwald dodging lightning at Mach 485.
The fastest feat I can find is from these wizards moving in tandem with lightning. They are moving at approximately Mach 7,697, nearly a percent of light speed.
However, we reach a new tier when talking about spell speeds. Spells have been referred to as light before, such as here.
A jet of red light shot out of the end of her wand and hit one of the rockets. Instead of freezing in midair, it exploded with such force that it blasted a hole in a painting of a soppy-looking witch in the middle of a meadow — she ran for it just in time, reappearing seconds later squashed into the painting next door, where a couple of wizards playing cards stood up hastily to make room for her.
And here.
"STUPEFY!" roared twenty voices — there was a blinding series of flashes and Harry felt the hair on his head ripple as though a powerful wind had swept the clearing. Raising his head a fraction of an inch he saw jets of fiery red light flying over them from the wizards' wands, crossing one another, bouncing off tree trunks, rebounding into the darkness
Taking these spells as light speed, Harry has blocked his spells before, both times reaching about 6% the speed of light, 0.0615c and 0.0672 respectively.
The fastest instance of this is from Voldemort, who blocked a desperate Expelliarmus from Harry. In order to do this, he must have been moving at 2.14c. That's more than twice the speed of light.
Tertiary factors:
Harry is pretty experienced, especially since he was only 18-years-old when he killed Voldemort. He has completed his full 7 year education program in Hogwarts and has been acting as an Auror in Hogwarts for the past 17 years, making him very experienced.
Harry is very skilled in fighting, with a large array of spells at his disposal and many battles under his belt and many battles. He is also very crafty, being able to trick the ministry of magic and Dolores by making a secret club of defense of the dark arts when the school refused to believe Voldemort's threat. He also leads the effort in finding Voldemort's Horcruxes alongside Dumbledore.
Percy has about 6 years of experience being a member of Camp Half-Blood, being around 12-years-old in the Lightning Thief and 18-years-old as of current. He is a natural swordsman and fighter, being one of the best swordsmen Camp Half-Blood has seen in centuries.
Percy: After lunch, I worked out in the arena with Apollo’s cabin. Swordplay had always been my strength. People said I was better at it than any camper in the last hundred years, except maybe Luke. People always compared me to Luke. I thrashed the Apollo guys easily. I should’ve been testing myself against the Ares and Athena cabins, since they had the best sword fighters, but I didn’t get along with Clarisse and her siblings, and after my argument with Annabeth, I just didn’t want to see her.
Percy is also surprisingly intelligent, being able to come up with unorthodox plans that often turn out successful, such as defeating a lion by throwing ice cream down its throat.
Percy: I scrambled away from the lion. It managed to choke down the space food packet and looked at me with pure hate. "Snack time!" I yelled. It made the mistake of roaring at me, and I got an ice-cream sandwich in its throat. Fortunately, I had always been a pretty good pitcher, even though baseball wasn't my game. Before the lion could stop gagging, I shot in two more flavors of ice cream and a freeze-dried spaghetti dinner. The lion's eyes bugged. It opened its mouth wide and reared up on its back paws, trying to get away from me. "Now!" I yelled. Immediately, arrows pierced the lion's maw—two, four, six. The lion thrashed wildly, turned, and fell backward. And then it was still.
Weaknesses:
Harry Potter:
Despite having an entire library worth of spells he can cast, Harry still has his favourites. There are certain spells that he uses more often than the rest as he has a greater preference for them, and this is even addressed in the series. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Remus Lupin had this to say:
Remus Lupin: Expelliarmus is a useful spell, Harry, but the Death Eaters seem to think it is your signature move, and I urge you not to let it become so!
Harry Potter: I won’t blast people out of my way just because they’re there ... That’s Voldemort’s job.
This makes Harry Potter's attack pattern more repetitive and predictable, since he is naturally inclined to opt for a spell such as Expelliarmus rather than a more obscure spell. Expelliarmus is actually recognised as Harry Potter's signature spell for its defensive nature, which has backfired on him before.
In the Battle of the Seven Potters, Harry Potter's protection spell broke when he turned seventeen, and he hence needed to be transported to a safer location. Six of Harry Potter's allies disguise themselves as Harry Potter to draw attention away from the real Harry Potter.
In the battle, Harry's usage of the Disarming Charm inadvertently exposes himself to Voldemort as Harry is the one who uses that specific spell the most. It's not to say that Harry wouldn't think to break out another spell if the occasion arose, but he does gravitate towards other spells.
There are also the forbidden spells which hold incredible power. The unforgivable curses —Avada Kedavra, Imperius, and Cruciatus— are the strongest known Dark spells in existence. Harry has actually used two of them before, using Cruciatus against Amycus Carrow and Imperius against two individuals during the Gringotts heist. He has never used Avada Kedavra. Although he has used them, it is highly unlikely he would even think to use them unless out of desperation.
Additionally, while Harry can still use magic without his wand, he still needs his wand to perform a good majority of his spells. He also struggles to see clearly without his glasses.
Oh, and J.K. Rowling. She's awful.
Percy Jackson:
Percy Jackson alone is strong, but he is really relying on the presence of water to gain access to all of his abilities. His power boosts and super healing are all linked towards there being a source of water that he is in contact with. Water also serves as his only form of long-ranged combat. Without water, he's really just a really good swordsman.
Annabeth: I don't know, Percy, but every hero has one. If you don't find it and learn to control it ... well, they don't call it 'fatal' for nothing.
Percy also has a fatal flaw, which is the primary mental or physical weakness that can be exploited against him. People of higher status, such as the Demigods, are more at risk of their tragic flaw being exploited, as happens so often in the tales of mythology.
Athena: Your fatal flaw may destroy us as well as yourself. Kronos knows your flaw, even if you do not. He knows how to study his enemies. Think, Percy. How has he manipulated you? First, your mother was taken from you. Then your best friend, Grover. Now my daughter, Annabeth… Your fatal flaw is personal loyalty, Percy. You do not know when it is time to cut your losses. To save a friend, you would sacrifice the world. In a hero of the prophecy, that is very, very dangerous.
I balled my fists. That's not a flaw. Just because I want to help my friends-''The most dangerous flaws are those which are good in moderation,' she said. 'Evil is easy to fight. Lack of wisdom... that is very hard indeed.’
Mars: "...every hero has a fatal flaw. Percy Jackson? He's too loyal to his friends. He can't give them up, not for anything. He was told that, years ago. And someday soon, he's going to face a sacrifice he can't make. Without you, Frank--without your sense of duty--he's going to fail. The whole war will go sideways, and Gaea will destroy our world.”
Percy's flaw is his loyalty towards and trust towards others. He is excessively loyal to his friends and family, willing to sacrifice his life for them. This trust can extend to his enemies, which can lead to him being taken advantage of. It also makes him more predictable.
FAQs:
Light speed:
Being a series about magic, there are a lot of instances where a character is dodging or weaving around a spell. That naturally brings up the question: how fast are spells? Well, some spells do follow some properties of being a laser, such as:
Being referred to as light.
Harry: Snape cried: 'Expelliarmus!' There was a dazzling flash of scarlet light and Lockhart was blasted off his feet: He flew backward off the stage, smashed into the wall, and slid down it to sprawl on the floor.
and reflecting off mirrors.
Harry: The snake lunged as he took a running leap, dragging Hermione with him; as it struck Hermione screamed "Confringo!" and her spell flew around the room exploding the wardrobe mirror and ricocheting back at them, from floor to ceiling; Harry felt the heat of it sear the back of his hand
However, they also have shown properties that suggest that they may not be lasers, such as:
Having force to the beam.
And the beam bending.
It also has shown to deflect off wood, which makes it rather questionable whether they actually follow the properties of light. To give the benefit of the doubt, I'll grant Harry Potter his Faster-than-light scaling, especially given that J.K. Rowling has stated that spells such as Accio travel near light speed.
JKR: Why couldn’t Newt use ‘Accio’ to retrieve all his beasts? ‘Accio’ only works on inanimate objects. While people or creatures may be indirectly moved by ‘Accio-ing’ objects that they are wearing or holding, this carries all kinds of risks because of the likelihood of injury to the person or beast attached to an object travelling at close to the speed of light.
Storm creation:
The most impressive feats in Harry Potter come from creating large storms. While it is might seem outlandish to suggest that Wizards scale fully to the storms they create, it is actually supported in the game Hogwarts Mystery.
The Jacob Siblings make it snow from Hogwarts all the way to the Burrow, but only manages to create a blizzard at Hogwarts. This is because they accidentally used their power to increase the volume of the blizzard instead of distance. This shows that the thickness and size of the storms created are done so with the Wizard's own firepower. There are also multiple instances of characters dispersing storms, including the instance of Professor Flitzgerald dispersing the storm which reached 6 Teratons of TNT.
Is Harry a Glass Cannon?
Harry Potter is often seen as a glass cannon, which means he can deal a lot of damage, but gets taken out easily. While this is partially accurate, that isn't quite the full truth.
Most of the time, I tend not to discuss durability as it is often equal to strength. See for example: Wonder Woman. Her strength is on par with Superman’s strength, and she can take hits from Superman, translating to her durability being on par with Superman's strength. On the whole, Strength and Durability are often equal.
While Harry's durability and physical strength are below his raw fire power, it isn't entirely far behind. Many times during the series, he is able to bear the brunt of spells that send him flying. So while Harry is a glass cannon, he isn't so fragile to the point where he cannot take a hit or two.
The Big Three:
“I have brought you a hero's fate,
and a hero's fate is never happy.
It is never anything but tragic”
The three most powerful sons of Kronos and the three most powerful of the Olympian Gods, the Big Three refers to Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. They rule over the largest factions of the universe, with Zeus receiving the Heavens, Hades receiving Hell and Poseidon receiving the skies. The only problem? Percy doesn't scale to them, at all.
He has on some occasions gotten close, such as summoning a geyser in a location where Poseidon would struggle to produce a salty spring.
Percy: The wizened grey giant shuffled into sight, holding an oversized meat cleaver. He fixed his milky eyes on Annabeth. Percy shouted. At the other end of the Acropolis, a hundred yards away, a geyser of water shot into the sky. King Porphyrion laughed. ‘You’ll have to do better than that, son of Poseidon. The earth is too powerful here. Even your father wouldn’t be able to summon more than a salty spring.
Although, it is made very clear by every character in the series, including Percy himself, that if they wanted to, they could kill Percy without breaking a sweat.
Percy: The gods weren't moving or speaking, but there was tension in the air, as if they'd just finished an argument. I approached the fisherman's throne and knelt at his feet. "Father." I dared not look up. My heart was racing. I could feel the energy emanating from the two gods. If I said the wrong thing, I had no doubt they could blast me into dust. To my left, Zeus spoke. "Should you not address the master of this house first, boy?" I Kept my head down, and waited. "Peace, brother," Poseidon finally said. His voice
stirred my oldest memories: that warm glow I
remembered as a baby, the sensation of this god's hand on my forehead. "The boy defers to his father. This is only right.’
The Curse of Achilles:
The Curse of Achilles is a power and a curse that a person can acquire when they bathe in the River Styx. Percy briefly acquired the Curse of Achilles, gaining invulnerability, enhanced strength and speed, and increased fighting prowess. He also gains a weak spot on his back, similar to Achilles's heel.
He becomes so much more powerful that he can walk off attacks that would have shattered every bone in his body.
Percy: The battle still raged around us. On the right flank, Annabeth was leading an assault with her siblings. On the left flank, Grover and his nature spirits were regrouping, entangling the enemies with bushes and weeds. "Enough games," Hyperion told me. "We fight on land." I was about to make some clever comment, like "No," when the Titan yelled. A wall of force slammed me through the air—just like the trick Kronos had pulled on the bridge. I sailed backward about three hundred yards and smashed into the ground. If it hadn't been for my new invulnerability, I would've broken every bone in my body. I got to my feet, groaning. "I really hate it when you Titans do that." Hyperion closed on me with blinding speed. I concentrated on the water, drawing strength from it.
Unfortunately, it is not included in this blog as Percy loses the curse. He inadvertently washes it away in the Little Tiber surrounding New Rome, as part of his acceptance there.
Percy: Percy stood on the riverbank. His clothes and his skin steamed as if the Tiber’s waters had given him an acid bath. He felt exposed, raw…vulnerable.

For those of you familiar with both Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, you might be expecting Percy Jackson to be far stronger and more powerful… and you'll be completely right. However, I don't want to undersell Harry for he is genuinely powerful. Wizards in his universe causing cataclysmic events such as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius at nearly 4 Gigatons of TNT is considered a relatively possible thing. Scaling to the biggest storms that his peers have created, his power output can potentially reach as high as a staggering 6 Teratons of TNT. Still, Khione freezing the Mediterranean gives Percy an attack potency of 14 Petatons of TNT, more than 2,000 times greater than the best Harry has to offer. Scaling to Artemis lighting up the constellations would upgrade Percy up to 60 Exatons of TNT, making Percy 100,000,000 times stronger than Harry.
With speed, it is more interesting. Percy Jackson is averaging about 2% the speed of light with him blocking Hyperion's light and Nico opening the Underworld. Harry's speed is a bit more debatable, all depending on whether spells are actually light speed. Harry's top speed without light speed spells is around Mach 7700 or 0.8% the speed of light from moving in tandem with lightning, which is around 2 times slower than Percy. With them, his greatest feat is around twice the speed of light, around 200 times faster than Percy.
So with the context set, how do their abilities fare against each other? When first approaching this blog, I expected Harry Potter to have better abilities across the board. While researching, I was blown away at how many abilities and spells Harry had in his arsenal. Upon closer inspection, I was equally blown away by how obsolete they all were.
Let's take a moment to look through the spells Harry has. Most of his attacking spells are useless —regardless of how many potions he drinks or Stupefy-ies he fires, he is not going to close a gap of 100 million times. His fire spells such as Firestorm are too weak to meaningfully do more than surprise Percy, especially given Percy already has resistance to high levels of heat. His mind attacks such as the Patented Daydream Charm similarly are not going to break through Percy's mind resistance. His water attacks would do more harm than good, only powering Percy up. He has a lot of annoying spells to trip Percy up, bind his eyes and legs, or give Percy a face… full of pimples, but at the end of the day those can only stall for time.
Percy's magic resistance is a huge game changer. Even giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming that Harry's most powerful spells would still work, Percy is likely protected from weaker spells such Diminuendo and Reducio (which shrinks their target) or other Transfiguration spells that he otherwise would not have defences against.
That's not to say that Harry is completely out of options. Harry's Firebolt and Percy's Blackjack can both bring the battle into the air, but Percy is short on long range options while most of Harry's arsenal is long ranged. His better range also grants him better battlefield control, making it hard for Percy to hit him. He can also stop Percy's healing factor using Impervious, as well as use Impervious to stop water from touching him. Still, most, if not all, of Harry's offensive options are either too weak to harm Percy or get countered by Percy's many defenses. It also does not help that Harry has a tendency to rely on a small selection of spells.
Compared to Harry having a large quantity of abilities, Percy’s abilities have far better quality. His greater skill and absurd strength means that he has effectively secured a victory when the battle becomes close quarters. Riptide returns to Percy’s pocket in the form of a pen, which nullifies Expelliarmus. Additionally, given Riptide can injure the mortal magician Carter Kane, there is little reason to suggest that Percy's sword would not carve straight through Harry in a single strike. With Percy’s hydrokinesis, if Harry gets caught in any water, it's all over.
Ultimately, the only real advantage Harry has against Percy is his 200 times speed advantage (which depending on the arguments he might actually be 2 times slower). Even with his faster reaction speed, he lacks a viable means of putting Percy down for good. He has many ways to bide for time, but no real win condition. Meanwhile, Percy has many straightforward and easy ways to take Harry out quickly.
Harry's speed and absurd arsenal will pose a challenge for the Son of Poseidon, but Percy’s overwhelming strength, water abilities, and demigod physiology will claim the victory of the ages over the Boy who Lived.
Have a hopefully happy 2025.
I'll see you all soon.
