Mysterion VS Mr. Immortal ( South Park VS Marvel Comics )
“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.” — Norman Cousins
Two immortal blond superheroes known for their gag of resurrecting everytime they die. Their deaths come with a comical side effect. ( Mr. Immortal gets angry every resurrection, and everyone forgets Kenny's death.) However, the origins of their power holds a greater place in the universe, with Mr. Immortal being a backup to restart the universe in the case Franklin Richards dies and cannot do it, and Kenny's Immortality coming from the Necronomicon and the cult of Cthulhu. They both have contrasting views on their immortality, with Mr. Immortal seeing it as an advantage for his super hero job while Kenny sees it as a curse as he is tired of dying.
April Fools! Got you! A South Park character VS A Marvel Character, isn't that funny? You thought it would be Rocket VS Stitch, but it isn't!
Haha…..ha...I actually have to do this now huh?
Yeah, this is the weirdest matchup this year, featuring a South Park Character and a Marvel Character you probably have never heard of.
Eh, sounds fun actually… Let's do it.
Fanart: “Death’s Mystery”
Mysterion:
A long time ago, in a quiet, snowy mountain town in Colorado, a stupid teenager with an equally stupid pregnant girl got drunk …and proceeded to join a cult …and then sacrificed their child to an ancient cosmic entity. Welcome to South Park!
Kenneth “Kenny” Mccormick is a 9-year-old blonde middle child known for 2 things; his inaudible voice caused by his orange parka; and his inability to stay dead. He was born into an impoverished family of 4 with an older brother, an alcoholic father and a drug addict mother.
Kenny is a foul-mouthed individual ( like most in South Park ) and is most commonly noted off as a gag with his voice and his many deaths. For a long time that was all there was to Kenny — a kid with a weird voice and his inability to stay alive.
That was until his extended death in Season 5, and when he came back in Season 6, we started seeing new sides to Kenny; and that could not be more true than his superhero persona: Mysterion.
With Mysterion, Kenny didn't only protect his friends and his town, but also his 6-year-old younger sister from the harsh world around her.
That was until the birth of his sister. Kenny would later be responsible on many other occasions to protect his friends and family. Decades into the future, following the COVID Pandemic leading to the breakup of his friends, Kenny gave his good future to give his friends a chance to amend their wrongs and restart a better future.
Originally a mere gag turned into a tragic yet kind-hearted brother, hidden between all his crude humor and jokes. His journeys of mythology, fantasy and superheroism, reflects his resilience and friendship and the absurdity of life itself.
Kenny is the heart and soul of South Park; All his friends and family, all the weirdness and the genuinity, and all its dark humor yet genuinity. It's pretty hard to argue that there is any character who has done more good in South Park than Kenny Mccormick.
Mr Immortal:
His mother? Killed from giving birth to him.
His father? Burned to death alongside his home.
His life had been full of tragedy, with disaster always lurking around the corner. Craig Hollis could not live his life another. He jumped off a building and plunged towards the ground, splattering his body against the pavement. His journey had ended before it began.
Except it hadn't. His head stung for a moment before he rose back up. He was unharmed from the fall. He had resurrected. Mr. Immortal was born with the ability to resurrect himself after death, making him functionally immortal. He was a Homo-Supreme, destined to live to the end of time, and beyond even that. He was the final evolutionary step.
Confused and alone, he donned the altar ego of Mr. Immortal in search of others like him. Eventually, he had found a home with the Great Lake Avengers. Over time, Mr. Immortal had found a reason to live. He could other's lives better, in spite of his dark origins and trauma.
Mr. Immortal is a testament against nihilism and existentialism — The idea that maybe something so insignificant can make a difference in the world. Mr. Immortal had found people that made him happy. Perhaps that was the journey, to find memories worth remembering as we sink towards the end of everything.
Ground Rules:
No outside help will be given. None of Kenny’s friends will be involved, neither will the Great Lake Avengers or any of Craig’s friends.
No outside non-standard gear.
They will be in character. They will also be given their high end feats in line with what makes sense for their character.
They will be given only canon material; Mysterion will be given the South Park Shows, Movies and Specials, as well as the 3 games. Mr Immortal will be given all of his mainline 616 marvel comic appearances.
Scaling:
Mysterion:
Kenny, despite his constant dying, scales reasonably high in his verse. Most of the South Park Kids are on the same level of power, with Kenny actually being one of the more dangerous ones as Mysterion.
The Heroes in The Fractured But Whole should directly scale to themselves from Stick or Truth, given that they win the fight against their past selves.
Kenny's immortal nature puts him among the stronger characters in the universe, such as Mint Berry Crunch, Satan, New Kid, and others.
Kenny should scale to among the higher characters in the universe.
Mr Immortal:
Mr Immortal's scaling is a little different from most of Marvel’s Street Tier Heroes. Despite his powers and his significant purpose in the lore of the Marvel Universe, he is not too formidable of a foe. He has showings of kicking Hawkeye in the face, and immediately taking a hit from Mockingbird: To which neither Hawkeye nor Mr Immortal are injured…like at all. He also knocks over Captain America, to little effect.
Mr Immortal also has an incredibly bad track record with a causal Deadpool — having been shot, decapitated twice, and killed with shurikens.
And given that Causal Deadpool has been taken out by Hawkeye by a single attack, it serves to say that Mr Immortal doesn't really compare to the human heroes in the Marvel Universe.
He really is just an average dude with immortality in the grand scheme of things. He still should be able to downscale from the Marvel Street Tier.
Power :
Even at worst, Marvel’s street tier has consistently demonstrated a power output enough to reach the low ton ranges of TnT. Probably my favorite example is the collective man , who punches with the force of all of China’s population.
( Bringing out all the weird trivial knowledge today. )
The lower ranges of South Park too reach about that range, with Satan in Stan’s body exploding the Canadian Devil and the Department of Mobile Gaming. ( It's weird, it's like that a lot. )
From there, we would have the Kiloton Level Feats. The Black King took the recoil of a gun that shot out a neutron star — yielding about 88.0 Kilotons of TnT — despite being a physically unenhanced kid. Given that the Black King is physically human, Mr Immortal should scale above this.
Mysterion meanwhile should be comparable to New Kid, who took a UFO crashing into the South Park Mall.
For the Megaton Levels feats, Marvel is nothing short of remarkable. Most Marvel Characters should scale above Spiderman from when he takes a blast from the Phoenix Force. He was almost dead at this point, so it can serve as a good benchmark.
Meanwhile, Fastpass was able to encircle the earth 3 times in a few seconds before ramming into his opponent. This yields about 158 Megatons of TnT! — Over 8 times greater than Spiderman's Phoenix Force feat.
From here onwards, Mr Immortal's upper limit becomes a lot more blurry. Heroes generally begin to struggle when they reach the hundreds of Megatons of Power.
For instance, the Iron Fist villain “Radion” is stated to have power measured in the hundreds of megatons.
Rocket Raccoon and Gamora also survived a blast that tore through the Tennant Spaceship they were in, with each ship capable of surviving 200 Megaton impacts.
Spiderman was knocked out by an exajoule of energy — which is only about 239 Megatons of TnT. That is about where I draw the line for the upper limits for Mr Immortal.
However, the higher end for South Park far eclipses that. In “Majourine”, all the boys — including Kenny — were able to survive an explosion that was visible from space.
The New Kid managed to spin the earth 10 times in a few seconds, yielding energy in the ranges of Large Planet to Small Star. This is oddly consistent with Cartman screaming loud enough to affect outside the galaxy yielding similar amounts.
The cult of Shub Niggurath — Shub Niggurath is the grandmother of Cthulhu — were performing rituals that could move the moon and extinguish the sun, so this level of power isn't actually out of the norm.
Even without the cosmic celestial stuff, the explosion that the South Park Boys took is still about 4,000 times greater than the energy Spiderman survived; And when using a more reasonable middle end for Mr Immortal — Spiderman’s Phoenix Force Feat — Kenny is over 50,000 times stronger.
Speed :
Speed is a similar story. Both South Park and Marvel can reach the relativistic ranges, via Fastpass running around the earth or the plethora of light dodging feats.
At his fastest, Mysterion should scale to the Human Kite, who exited the atmosphere at 1.37 times the speed of light.
At his fastest, Mr Immortal should scale to the many nanosecond-timing feats performed by Marvel Heroes — such as the infamous Daredevil nanosecond feat that I always keep mentioning on every Marvel blog.
( 6.22 Times Greater )
Abilities & Counters :
Let's talk about Immortality.
Mutants are birthed from mutations, caused by the X-Gene in the mutants’ DNA. They often bestow them incredible gifts and abilities superior to the rest of humanity. They are referred to as the Homo-Superior, superior to Homosapiens.
Mr. Immortal is a mutant — but not like any Homo-Superior — but a Homo-Supreme. I feel like an edgy OC creator from 2015 reading this. His body can regenerate from any activity, allowing him to return from death in anywhere from 10 minutes to only a few seconds.
That's not from lack of trying, he has survived everything from being burned alive by the original Human Torch, to his own su*cide. Suffocation, Dehydration and Incineration have all failed, as well as getting shot, crushed, or drowned.
Deathurge ( A former server of Oblivion ) explains that he is the final step of human evolution, surpassing death itself. The Homo-Supreme; to see the end of time itself and learn every secret of the universe. He will also restart the universe, in the case that Franklin Richards is dead.
In fact, he is one of the few that is even able to see Oblivion and his heralds. Some gods in Marvel are based on concepts, with Oblivion as the literal concept of Oblivion itself.
Cthulhu is a cosmic entity from an alternate dimension originating from "The Call of Cthulhu". An enormous monster, worshiped by cultists, to destroy the planet alone with the human race.
Kenny gets his abilities from a ritual placed onto him by the Cult of Cthulhu when he was a child, and was cursed to be an Immortal.
Immortal beings are well… immortal. They either cannot be killed, like Satan and Man Bear Pig, or can come back to life after having been killed, like Kenny or Jesus Christ. That isn't from lack of trying, Kenny has died at least 120 times. Other confirmed immortals include God, Mintberry Crunch and Manbear Pig.
There is only one way to kill Immortals. Only Immortals can kill other immortals
“The Only Thing that can kill an Immortal is another Immortal” — Henrietta Biggle.
This is actually proven when Satan sacrifices himself against Manbear Pig, dying permanently and going to Heaven. Weird.
Funnily, this means that their immortality is useless, as they can actually kill each other. Other than that, they can incapacitate each other by other means.
What other abilities do they have? Having read through literally all of Mr Immortal's appearance, this man has nothing… outside of a gun to shoot himself.
Meanwhile, despite being broke, Kenny has a surprising amount of gear and abilities, such as a flute that can make people defecate themselves, possession, Magic and Necromancy, almost other things.
Tertiary factors :
As previously mentioned, he isn't too skilled either, being clearly several tiers below that of Deadpool.
Meanwhile, Kenny has quite literally led the Heavens in a battle against Hell… Don't even ask. So, quite a difference in skill. Mr Immortal is older and more experienced though.
Weakness:
Both Kenny and Craig share the same weakness of being inconsistent. Other than that, Mr. Immortal downloads music illegally, shame on him.
Kenny is also poor… They said it, not me.
FAQs:
Do the Superheroes in The Fractured But Whole actually have powers? Are they canon?
The powers shown in the 2 South Park Games are dubiously canon. Supposedly, only Bradley and Kenny ( and later Mintberry Crunch and New Kid ) are the ones to have superpowers. No one else should have abilities, and all the adults play along as they are high on catpiss.
However, it is shown that they are able to use their abilities to fight against Aliens unaffected by catpiss.
Fastpass is also able to use his speed abilities on a random woman, so it is possible that it is simply an extension of their force abilities, similar to that that allowed them to survive the explosion in “Majourine”.
What is Toon Force?
A lot of South Park uses Toon Force, I should probably explain what that is.
Toon Force, or Cartoon Physics, refers to when characters break, manipulate, or bypass the physical laws of nature to do something wacky yet impossible, for comedic effect.
Take for instance, Spongebob accidentally using a string to destroy the universe;
Or Gumball and Darwin rewinding time too far and witnessing the big bang.
Imagination Land & Cthulhu:
Cthulhu and Imaginationland are admittedly 2 avenues to scale South Park even higher than what I have mentioned… in which I have admittedly not looked too deeply into.
Imaginationland, is a place where all the beings created by human imagination reside; Featuring everyone from Wonder Woman to Luke Skywalker. Butters is one of the “Creators”, having power over creation in Imaginationland. Kenny should not scale as he is not a Creator.
Cthulhu supposedly is able to manipulate all of the universe, which according to Lovecraft Lore, is infinite.
However, the only person who has opposed Cthulhu is Mintberry Crunch, who is also an Immortal. So Kenny shouldn't really be comparable — If South Park Cthulhu is comparable at all.
Kenny isn't comparable to Imaginationland Butters or MintBerry Crunch, so this scaling isn't really worth looking into for him. Maybe another time if I ever cover Butters.
Kenny’s real name:
Just a neat bit of trivia since J was wondering why all the Wikipedia articles calls “Kenneth” Kenny's real name. In “Going Native”, Kenny signs his name off as Kenneth, and his father calls him Kenneth in “The Poor Kid”. Whether they are just being fancy, or it's his actual name? Who knows.
Final Verdict :
Mysterion;
+ Stronger
+ More Versatile & Better Counters
+ Somehow he is more skilled?
+ More Intelligent
+ More versatility & Better Counters
+ Can bypass Craig’s Immortality
+ Princess Kenny
- Doesn’t revive immediately
- More inconsistent
- Poor
Mr Immortal;
+ Faster
+ More Experienced
+ Can bypass Kenny’s Immortality
+ Comes back instantly from death
+ Technically more complex Immortality
- His name is not Craig Tucker….
- Downloads Music Illegally
Y’know, it's funny how their Immortality — their most recognisable trait — is the most irrelevant factor. Kenny and Craig can both either bypass it, or can knock each other out if that doesn't work.
From there, the gap in physicals is just too huge. Mr Immortal may be a few times faster, but Mysterion is several thousand times stronger. Mr Immortal is more experienced and has a more complex Immortality system, but Kenny literally takes everything else — including gear and skill apparently.
Kenny’s greater strength and skill secures his victory over the Homo-Supreme.
Winner: Mysterion
Next time:
I will deliver what I promised.
Final Comments:
That was a pretty fun blog to write. A rather niche Marvel Character in Mr. Immortal and an oddly complex yet compelling character in Kenny Mccormick certainly made it fun to research.
One last thing before I go. I wanted to give a final thank you to Matpat and the Game Theorists for making this possible. The show has inspired me for years since at least 2015. It has taught me how to be creative, how to be genuine, and how to have unfiltered fun. I owe so much to them.
Keep theorizing. Thank you.
