Doctor Fate VS Doctor Strange ( DC Extended Universe VS Marvel Cinematic Universe )

The movie version of comic book superheroes who are the Sorcerer Supremes of their universe. Both started off as ordinary men ( Kent Nelson and Steven Strange ) and through mystical encounters became the greatest magic users in their universe.

Doctor Fate VS Doctor Strange.

With MrTechnodad releasing "One of Us" and introducing the One of Us Global Foundation, the new blog is here.

2 "new" series today, featuring the MCU and the DCEU as new contenders. I mean, technically they're still Marvel and DC , but their continuities are different enough for me to consider them different.

I've been meaning to release a Doctor Strange blog after the multiverse of madness last year , and with the release of Black Adam and one of my favorite versions of Doctor Fate, it's a good time to cover some new material.

Let's get started.

Ground Rules:

No outside help. No outside non-standard gear. They will be in character. They will be given their high end feats in line with what makes sense for their character.

Power & Durability :

First and foremost, let us discuss context. Where do Strange and Fate scale?

Doctor Strange is a top tier magician in the MCU, and the (former) Sorcerer Supreme. His best form of scaling comes from fighting Thanos with 4 infinity stones without using his own time stone.

Even without the infinity stones, Thanos took down practically every other high tier hero in the MCU ; Hulk, Thor, Mark 85 & 50 Ironman, Worthy Captain America, Captain Marvel ,etcetera. Steven should be comfortably on par with the best the MCU has to offer.

Doctor Fate is a strange case. He is no doubt a massive threat in the DCEU , but he has fallen off with age. According to the director of “Black Adam” , Doctor Fate in his prime is a cosmic level threat, far above planetary threats like Sabbac or Black Adam, but he has become weaker over time.

He is not what he is supposed to be, but he is still a top tier hero, capable of keeping up with Black Adam and Sabbac with ease.

Let us start with Kent. How much power does he hold in his magic?  With his magic, he is directly able to compare to Black Adam , who caused this massive chunk of water to explode upon his transformation. [856 Megatons of TNT](Mountain Level)

Mountain Level is impressive, but Pre-awakened Thor shattered Sokovia with Mjölnir at a whooping 163 Gigatons of TnT [ Large Island; 190 times difference ]

Both Fate and Strange can get higher by scaling to other characters in their own universes.

The most impressive thing shown in the DCEU is Superman flying through the World Engine's laser beam. This beam was made with the intent to terraform the planet earth in a few weeks , releasing an energy output of 1.03 Teratons [Small Country].

This is impressive , but the MCU has a direct equivalent to that. Loki uses the Bi-frost to terraform the planet Jotunheim. The World Engine would tear apart a planet in a few weeks, the Bi-frost would tear apart a planet in less than an hour.

( 1.47 exatons) [ 14,300,000 times stronger ]

Both Thor and Hulk have broken through the bifrost.

There is even higher scaling for MCU heralds. Like Thor shaking a planet.

Khonshu moving the moon.

MCU Heralds even have potential planetary scaling. Thor is comparable to Odin with Planet shattering energy.

Strange’s shield temporarily withstanding a planet-destroying blast.

Gorr the god butcher even moved a star.

The DCEU has a few arguments for higher levels of planet level scaling, though they are all not that strong.

The original Doomsday debatably destroyed half a moon in his fight against Steppenwolf, though the time frame is unknown.

A “planet” level blast from the Motherboxes instantly atomises all the Justice League except for the Flash , that is even assuming that it is a planet level blast. The animation shows it as only Planet Surface level.

Planet Level DCEU is hard to argue for, while the MCU has a few strong points.

However - while they are both powerful - they are also glass cannons. Doctor Fate has been killed in one hit by Sabbac. Even street tier characters like Atom Smasher could take a hit from Black Adam and only be temporarily knocked out.

Doctor Strange has been knocked out in a single hit by Thanos, and temporarily taken out by Gargantos. He has even been apprehended by Spiderman before.

In terms of durability, they are more akin to that of street tier heroes.

The highest feat of strength or durability that DCEU Street tier has shown is Batman swinging Superman through 4 pillars, placed at 0.148 tons of TNT. ( Small Building)

Scaling to Black panther Shuri, who destroyed this rock formation, would put her at 0.186 tons of TNT.

Doctor Strange also took a point blank explosion from a Pumpkin Bomb. A Pumpkin bomb’s explosive impact values about 0.7 tons of TNT.

Strange generally has more power and can take a bigger hit, but both of them are fragile glass cannons which would be important for later.

Speed:

The fastest speed feat Strange can scale to is Captain Marvel scouting titan in about 23 seconds. Giving a conservative, considering Captain Marvel’s visibility range as well as assuming 30 seconds, this comes to about 2.84c.

Ikaris also flew to the sun in apportionment 28 seconds ( 38 seconds, minus 10 seconds off him staring at earth. ) (18.0c)

( 150,830,000,000m/28 seconds)/(299,792,458m/s)

The fastest feat of speed for Fate is scaling to Wonder Woman, who reacted to Doomsday’s heat vision. [Doomsday’s heat vision was directly copied from Superman’s heat vision, and has been shown directly matching it in a beam clash. It’s reasonable to say that Doomsday’s heat vision is directly comparable to Superman’s.]

Superman’s heat vision travels at the speed of light.  Given the distance, Wonder Woman must have moved around 0.23 c.

DCEU Heralds do have arguments for FTL speeds, but I’m hesitant to believe in them. The Flash has directly stated that the universe starts to distort when he approaches the speed of light. He proves this later when he starts to time travel when moving faster than light.

" I don't like to break this rule, but if I approach the speed of light , I-...look crazy things happen to time but if I do it I create massive electrical power".

-Flash on charging the motherbox.

Pre-FTL Flash is able to dodge a violent Superman and move fast enough to keep all his teammates as statues [Including Wonder Woman]. Later when Flash was moving faster than light, he also kept Superman as a statue.

[ The Justice League (except Superman) frozen when Flash runs normally. ]

[ The Justice League frozen when Flash approaches the speed of light when reviving Superman ]

[ Justice League frozen when Flash goes far beyond the speed of light and reverses time ]

As of current, the only DCEU character that is faster than light should be the Flash. The MCU has no such restriction.

On a multitude of occasions, MCU Heroes have been able to react to the repulsor beams.

Which has been stated numerous times to be light and has properties of light, such as reflecting off surfaces.

MCU characters also have a multitude of FTL scaling, notably against Tony Stark’s repulsor blasts.

The Flash does have a potential nanosecond statement, which would put his reactions at FTL,( Traveling a meter in a nanosecond is already 3.3 times FTL ) but Dr Fate being comparable to this is a big stretch.

Ikaris flying to the sun is still faster anyways.

Skill & Experience:

In terms of skill , they're both around the same, being able to keep up with people like Thanos and Black Adam.

Strange is better in raw hand to hand , given that we haven't seen much from Dr Fate. Meanwhile , Strange beat Baron Mordo in hand to hand , Baron Mordo being a primarily hand to hand fighter.

Strange himself is only around 36 , but his mental experience is much higher.

Doctor Strange saw and sat through 14,000,605 possible timelines when looking for ways to defeat Thanos. The timeline he picked extended all the way into 5 years in the future.

Giving him a rough maximum age of 70 million years old mentally.

Kent is only about 110 years old, but Fate is a lot older - as old as the universe - at 13.7 billion years old.

Fate should be more experienced.

Intellect & Stamina:

Their intellect and Stamina are roughly equal. They both serve as the main reasons for logic in their teams , and both can fight basically indefinitely if they're up for it.

Strange is able to handle things like a time loop and timeline precognition , while we haven't seen Fate doing anything close , so that's noteworthy.

Abilities and Counter :

These 2 actually have very similar abilities, despite Dr Fate only having 1 movie appearance to his name.

Light constructs, illusions, abstractual projection, shields, weapons, clones, flight, teleportation, etcetera; They have a lot of the same powers.

To be fair, Doctor Fate does seem better in what he can do. For example, his conjuring of light constructs like shields and swords are much faster than Strange's standard shields. Strange needs more advanced spells like the crimson bands of cyttorak or the seven suns of cinnibus to keep up.  His teleportation is faster and more effective than the sling rings, which can be removed or damaged.

Doctor Strange could teleport instantly when talking to Thor in Thor:Ragnarok , but he has not used this yet outside of Thor:Ragnorak.

Strange has the sacred swords of vishanti, but Kent has a freaking nuke sword.

Kent's clones are vastly superior to Steven’s , being stronger and more easily summonable than the images of ikonn.

Fate can fly on his own , while Strange needs his cloak of levitation. Fate's abstral projection allows his mind and his body to do 2 different things at once , while Strange can only do 1 at once with his own astral projection.

"My mind and body can exist at 2 places at once".

-Doctor Fate to Black Adam.

Doctor Fate also doesn't need to prepare his spells , while a lot of Doctor Strange's spells have specific incantations which can and have been interrupted. Especially in this case with Fate’s go to move , his clones.  Doctor Strange has been incapacitated numerous times , a notable one being against Ebony Maw.

Most importantly, his precognition. Being the Doctor Fate gives Fate the ability to see the possible futures that Fate would follow, and alter his own actions to change Fate. Strange used to be able to do this , but has lost the ability ever since he lost the time stone.

There are a few limitations to Dr Fate's precognition. Firstly, it takes a lot of strain.

In the image I showed above , it took him an entire car ride to get a few images of the future.

Secondly , it is distracting. He is unable to have precognitions about something and fight at the same time. In a fight like this , concentration is important.

Lastly, he still cannot change Fate. He can choose which Fate he wants from the possible futures , and adjust his actions accordingly, but if the Fate involves something important ( Like his death ) , he cannot stop it.

This explains how he died in Black Adam instead of Hawkman.

So it isn't the instant win condition it makes itself out to be. Fate has a lot of strong abilities , many of them I would argue stronger than Strange.

Strange luckily has a lot more versatility on his side. Like the winds of watoomb is a pretty good method to removing the Fate clones; Although it does leave Strange himself stuck in one position.

The Hoary hosts of Hoggoth transformed Thanos Black hole attack into butterflies. If he manages to pull it off in time , he can likely nullify any attack Dr Fate throws his way.

And the most powerful piece of Strange's arsenal, the mirror dimension.

Nothing - and I mean nothing - Doctor Fate can bypass the mirror dimension.

Only 2 people have managed to get around the mirror dimension.

Thanos used the power stone to prevent entering the mirror dimension.

And Scarlet Witch tore herself out of the mirror dimension using her regeneration.

Doctor Fate has neither of these. He cannot really avoid the attack either , given that Doctor Strange has dumped people into the mirror dimension instantaneously before.

In fact , it's a thing he really likes doing.

From there, he can fight Dr Fate in the mirror dimension , where he has total control of his surroundings.

Alternatively, he can just….leave Fate there. Fate doesn't have a way to actually leave the mirror dimension - and until he has shown that he can travel dimensions - he'll be trapped in the mirror dimension.

Effectively , Strange can win against Fate with the twist of his hand.

If we give them all their gear , Dr Strange is the only one we see have gear outside of his standard equipment. Some are as powerful as the book of vishanti.

And the cloak of levitation can serve well in defending against Fate clones.

Final Verdict:

Doctor Strange:

+ Power & Durability

+ Speed

+ More abilities

+ Counters

+ Gear

=    Skill

=    Intellect

Doctor Fate:

+ Stronger abilities

+ Experience

= Skill

= Intellect

The results may look lopsided,  but it is a lot closer than first impressions imply.

Power and Durability, for two of the most powerful characters in their respective universes, are kind of a non-factor actually.

They are both glass cannons, and they can both take each other down in a single hit.

If they can both take down each other in a single hit, that leaves us with 2 questions.

Who can put each other down better?

Who can put each other down faster?

Abilities are a tossup. Fate has better abilities, but Strange has a lot more abilities. It is a pretty close comparison, and it is pretty debatable for which would prevail.

Steven however is faster. In a battle where everything else is equal, an advantage like speed is critical.

And of course , the mirror dimension is an easy win.

Strange’s sheer versatility, raw power and tremendous speed would prevail against Doctor Fate’s better abilities. Looks like not even fate can stop Doctor Steven Strange.

Winner : Doctor Strange

Next month is my mid-year blog, and I’m pretty excited for it.

"Raining Pride"

Thor VS Vegeta ( Marvel Comics VS Dragon Ball Z)

We've seen how Dragon Ball pairs off against DC, but how do they fair against Marvel Comics? Let's take a look next month.
