Invincible VS Steven ( Invincible Comics VS Steven Universe )
Half human, half alien hybrid pacifistic protagonist heroes starring in a show named after them , who didn’t know of their heritage and only developed their powers until later in life. They're both the sons of parents that seemed initially respectable before they revealed a terrible secret that involved their race originally being bent on conquests. ( Omniman being a violent Viltrumite sent to conquer earth, Rose Quartz literally launching a war against herself). Their parents would later sacrifice their lives after turning a new leaf. They would both later spend the rest of their journey trying to rectify the mistakes of their parents and race and change the minds of their race. They were also both revealed to be secretly royal blood.
Mark Grayson VS Steven Quartz Cutie-Pie Demayo Diamond Universe….yeah that's real.
Invincible VS Steven Universe.
We have a lot to cover this blog. We have 2 relatively new series to cover, this is the first blog to reach over 100 images since Superman VS Goku.
Let's get cracking.
Disclaimer:
Given that this is the first time I'm showing images for a series like Invincible, I think I should give a warning.
Invincible is a violent adult series, with many displays of blood and disturbing images present. While I have kept it to a minimum, a lot of these are crucial to the feats I want to show, and if you're uncomfortable with large displays of blood, you're recommended to click off at any time.
Ground Rules :
No outside help. No outside non-standard gear. They will be in character. They will be given their high end feats.
Strength & Durability:.
Strength for Steven Universe is a bit more complicated so Invincible goes first.
Invincible's feat is pretty simple. He, alongside Omniman and Thadeus, destroyed the planet viltrum.
Although it isn't a 100% plantery feat of strength. The planet was already made unstable by the Space Racer's gun and Invincible caused a chain reaction ( Blowing up the core of Vitrum ) to destroy the planet rather than doing it 100% himself. He also had 2 other people of equal strength helping him, though I can give the benefit of the doubt given that they were fatigued.
"If the core has time to stabilize, we all can die on impact." -Thaddeus
Going off the calculation of the hole Invincible made on the planet , you can get roughly about 5.5 exatons of TnT. [ Multi-continental ]
That's pretty simple. It's arguable that Invincible could potentially scale higher to Planet level over the course of the series given his exponential growth, though this is never seen, and Steven too has grown.
Now what about Steven?
First of all, he should scale to Lapis Lazuli. Lapis Lazuli in a desperate attempt to escape Earth, uses her hydrokinesis to lift up the entire ocean and make it into a tower.
Not only does Steven scale to current Lapis, but Lapis was also weakened while doing this. She had a cracked gem, basically putting her on life support.
Calculating this out , you will get 165 Petatons of TnT. [ Multi-continental ] [ 33 times weaker ]
Secondly , he should reasonably scale to the Cluster. The Cluster is the artificial fusion of gems inside the earth made by Yellow Diamond made to casually destroy planets.
"Oh no. When it forms it'll be much much bigger than the earth."- Peridot on the size of the cluster.
Steven manages to prevent it's formation, and bubble it.
Does Steven = Large Plantery? Not just yet, Steven merely prevented its formation. Now how much damage would its formation do?
[ A handy little animation shown by Peridot demonstrating the formation of the Cluster. ]
Using the diagram and the timeframe given by Peridot's animation, this would come to 49 Ninatons of TnT [ Large Planet ] [ 8,910,000,000 times stronger ]
Finally , the last one. This one is a bit contentious.
Steven should scale to Rose Quartz , given that they share the same gem. Rose is able to block the Diamond Corrupting Light spanning an entire planet.
"We blasted the planet and obliterated every gem on the surface."-Blue Diamond on the Corrupting Light.
Baseline, this should be Planet Level, but it potentially be much higher. The exact location of the Diamonds during this event is unknown but there are 2 culprits.
On the Moon , as kind of suggested in the animation? This would just leave it at Planet Level. The other option is far more interesting.
On Homeworld. The significance of this is that Homeworld is in another galaxy.
" You can see Homeworld's galaxy from here." - Garnet to Peridot.
This would launch Steven’s attack potency all the way to Solar System level. [ 100-800 Quadrillion times stronger ]
( This calculation uses the assumption that Homeworld is in the Triangulum Galaxy, the second closest spiral galaxy to earth, given that that's the second furthest spiral galaxy from earth. It could potentially be further. )
" Did the Corrupting Light originate from Homeworld?"
Tough to say…the animation does not show anything definitive, it just looks like it comes from general space.
Blue Diamond has stated that White hasn't left homeworld in a long time.
"White hasn't left Homeworld in Eons" - Blue Diamond.
Eon means 1 billion years, which likely implies that White would be on Homeworld at the time of the diamond blast . According to the rough timeline of Steven Universe, the diamonds are only about 20,000 years old, so a weird thing is going on there.
Eons can also just mean "a really long time" which is obviously really vague.
Does it matter too much? Ehhh not really, Steven Universe ,at lowest calculations, is only a few dozen times weaker ; At highest calculations, he can be anywhere from 9 billion times to 800 Quadrillion times more powerful.
Invincible does grow over time to become stronger, but so does Steven, so these are a pretty good gauge of the power level they are at.
Speed:
Continuing off our last point, the Diamond Blast reached Earth in roughly 8 seconds. Using the 2.723 million light year distance we used for the previous calculation , that's roughly about 10.7 Trillion times FTL.
[ 2,723,000 light years ×9,461,000,000,000,000 meters per light year ÷8 seconds ÷299,792,458 m/s (Light speed)] (10,741,724,113,020 c )
Lapis Lazuli , in the episode " Raising the Barn" , left Earth with the Barn to flee from the Diamond Authority. She later reappears on the Moon in "Can't go back" , claiming she had been to the edge of the Milky Way.
The shortest distance to the edge of the milky Way is about 20,000 lightyears. The timeframe is unknown, likely only a few weeks if I'm going to be honest.
But comparing the airing dates of "Raising the Barn" and "Can't go back" , 22/12/17 and 7/5/18 respectively , gives about 136 days.
Multiply by 2 for the distance back , this is roughly about 1.1 Million times FTL.
[ 2 trips × 20 ,000 light years × 9,461,000,000,000,000 meters per light year ÷ (136 days × 24 hours × 3600 seconds ) ÷299,792,458 m/s (Light speed)] (1,123,878.1711787c )
The best speed feats Invincible has are from….just moving really fast.
Invincible manages to move faster than this ship, which was stated by Omniman to be the fastest in the coalition.
This ship managed to move from Viltrum to Earth in about 2 weeks, which is located at the Virgo SuperCluster, which is 65 Million Light years away from Earth.
( Virgo SuperCluster isn't a galaxy, but it's likely just a misunderstanding from the writers.)
[ 65,000,000 light years × 9,461,000,000,000,000 meters per light year ÷ (14 days × 24 hours × 3600 seconds) ÷ 299,792,458 m/s (Light speed)] (1,695,851,883.2964 c )
More impressively, remember the Lapis calc? Omniman did that too, but better. Omniman traveled to the Virgo SuperCluster in about a week’s time.
Multiplying our previous result by 2 , you'll get roughly around 3.4 billion times FTL.
Meanwhile , Steven can react to droids moving through warps, and warps are really fast.
( Crosses the distance of a galaxy in 0.04 seconds. ) ( 34 Trillion times FTL )
" Can Steven Universe Characters move faster than light? "
In the episode "Adventures in light distortion", Pearl claims that , since their bodies are made of light, their bodies start to malfunction when approaching the speed of light.
( The gems physical forms disappearing when accelerating to a higher speed. )
So FTL Steven Universe is a bit questionable.
Do we follow what we see? Or do we follow the statements? Tough to say whether faster than light Steven is legitimate, and the authors probably don't know themselves. However the ship was able to reach the Human Zoo (Approximately nearby Homeworld) in 70 years.
Which would require it to move at 40,000 FTL.
( 38,927.752819524c )
FTL seems more reasonable.
So the stats across the board are :
Invincible : 3 billion c
Steven ( FTL ) : 34 Trillion c
Steven ( <FTL ) : Maximum 1c
Making Invincible either 10,000 times slower , or 3,000,000,000 times faster….
Quite a big split, we'll come back to this later.
Skill and Experience:
Invincible is more skilled and experienced than Steven, naturally being a seasoned war-veteran having fought dozens of wars and led the empire for over 500 years compared to a pacifist 16 year old.
Invincible has shown remarkable skill, such as battling war veterans like Omniman and Thragg.
But to be fair, the gap isn't too big. Firstly, Steven himself has shown some skill, notably in his fights against Jasper and Spinel.
Jasper is stated to be the perfect soldier and was able to fight toe-to-toe with war veterans like Garnet, and Spinel was able to defeat all of the crystal gems at once after thousands of years of just standing still, so it's not like Steven is outmatched here.
Steven’s fighting style also counters Invincible's fighting style perfectly, given his defensive fighting style against Mark's more aggressive brawler fighting style.
Steven has handled people physically superior to him with similar fighting styles to Invincible, e.g. Amethyst and Jasper ; ergo he should be able to handle Invincible as well.
When Mark fights people with similar fighting styles to him but they have physical superiority, e.g. Omniman and Allen the Alien, and lost both fights.
Given his pacifistic approach to conflict, Steven is quite inexperienced and reluctant in comparison to Invincible's heavy fighting approach. However he doesn't have the same boundaries while in the many forms of Pink Steven.
It's also worth noting that of the 2, Steven is the only one here with any sort of martial arts training.
Generally, I still have to give Invincible the edge in these categories, but it isn't by a massive amount.
Intellect and Stamina:
They both have pretty good ranges of stamina.
Steven stayed awake for over 24 hours running around , took a beating from Spinel , and still won.
He also trained with Jasper for over 72 hours non-stop.
However , people like Omniman can fight for nearly a year straight.
While both Invincible and Steven are smart , they are both also naive , and generally are close enough to where intellect doesn't matter.
Generally, Invincible has about 121.7 times more stamina than Steven.
Abilities and Gear:
This is where Invincible kind of falls short. He is a brawler , " punch and kick " kind of character.
He can fly, that will be important later. And he has incredible pain-tolerance ,and will basically be able to live through all of it , as long as important organs like the brain or heart aren't damaged.
( It happens like every other Tuesday. )
Meanwhile Steven has quite a few.
Some of which are useless. Mind possession for instance , he can only use when he is sleeping.
Phyto-animation or shapeshifting isn't powerful enough to meaningfully change the fight.
He has no one to fuse with when in a 1v1 fight.
He can fly, well sort of. He has a float ability , which he can juice up to a sudo-flight ability. He only has used it in the third last episode of the show " Fragments " , so he isn't sper experienced with it.
While Steven hasn't shown pain tolerance and hasn't shown to be of the same level as Mark, he more than makes up for it with his regeneration. With this he has shown capable of not only healing wounds, and excess other abilities like Phyto-animation , but in extreme scenarios even revival.
(It's highly unlikely he'll be able to revive himself.)
Most importantly, by far, Steven's shields.
These weapons , in nature , naturally scale above Steven’s attack potency and durability. Not only is it versatile, but Steven is also very creative with it.
( Shield,Bubble,Spiked Bubble,Boxing Gloves Domes,Popping,Traps,Skateboard,etc. )
(And whatever on earth this thing is.)Steven also has his transformations.
Base Steven,
Pink Steven,
"Quartz" Steven,
"Kaiju" Steven.
His 3rd state , Quartz Steven, is the one most suitable for combat.
His 4th state, Kaiju Steven, is by far the most powerful thing in the SU Universe, beating out the combined might of Lapis Lazuli, the Diamonds and even the Cluster.
Counters:
Oddly enough, Invincible does have a few counters in spite of his lack of versatility.
He can hold his breath in space for 2 weeks. Steven is unable to breathe in space , neither is he able to take the freezing cold.
Mark has better flying capabilities than Steven, and he could take Steven out by taking him into space. He has done this before.
( It's worth noting that even though Mark has done this before , it is very out of character for him to do it here. )
Steven’s fourth state is kind of useless here. He loses all control, and kind of just becomes a sitting duck.
A really powerful sitting duck, but it is just in character for Mark to just throw this version of Steven into space.
Base Steven , while still arguably having access to Cluster and Diamond scaling , is still the weakest and most unwilling to conflict out of all of his forms. This leaves him vulnerable to a speedblitz , where Mark takes out Steven before Steven has the time to react, especially if you give Mark the 3 billion times speed advantage.
Steven's powers are largely based on emotions, which means fluctuations. Leaving to him on one occasion getting completely thrashed by Spinel , only to thrash her later in the film.
"As long as he believes he's a monster, he'll stay one." - Garnet on Kaiju Steven.
He can also target his gem , though it's unlikely he'll know that.
Mark can counter some of Steven's abilities, but it mostly relies on him being out of character or Steven's power level being inconsistent.
If Steven is on his A-game, I doubt Invincible can get past those shields.
Mark's greatest advantage here is his possible speed edge , but Steven has many ways to get around that, especially with his dome and trapping attacks.
Final Verdict :
Steven Universe:
+Strength & Durability
+Maybe Faster
+Versatility
+Haxes
+Counters
=Equal Strength
=Intellect
=Gear
-Less willing to fight…
+Willing to fight in Pink
Invincible:
=Intellect
=Gear
+Maybe Faster
+Experience
+Skill
+Stamina
+BattleField control
+More in-character win-cons
This fight is close in a weird way.
In terms of Primary Factors, it is mixed. Steven is stronger and more durable , but speed is a toss up. In the scenario where Steven is slower than Light , the strength against speed advantage is only about 3 times of a difference in Steven's favor, which can be overcomed depending on secondary and tertiary factors.
In terms of tertiary factors, Mark has a small advantage. Fighting skill is a toss up again, with only a small advantage in Mark's favor.
Only stamina really is a big gap, and that only really matters if the fight drags out for really long.
I doubt that would happen given Steven's versatility. I don't see Invincible being able to navigate around those shields in the long run.
Ultimately it is more likely Steven puts Invincible down before Invincible outlasts Steven. If you give Steven his 34 Trillion FTL scaling….then the result becomes clear as day.
Invincible is well….nigh-invincible , but Steven's superior offense , Impenetrable defense ,and wide variety of powers are enough to put down the Viltrumite.
Winner : Steven Universe
And this is why I introduce one series at a time. That was a long one. That's all I have planned for these 2 series this year , though if all goes according to plan, new characters will be getting featured next year.
That's all I have time for today. I hope you enjoyed the blog and I'll see you all soon.
I'm not quite done with less mainstream Comic series yet , I still have another one I wanna do.
" Wild Hearts "
Tank Girl VS Harley Quinn ( DC Comics VS IDW Comics )
See you then. Bye!
